Just returned my E4GT

I just returned my E4GT. All the employees were looking at me crazy and wondering why i was returning it. I came from the HTC EVO 4G and never experienced signal problems, nor slow data connection speeds. I would literally lose signal in areas where the evo would work best. I constantly had to reset the phone for it to catch signal again.

The Manager was trying to explain to me that this phone has top of the line processor and specs. I told him that i already knew all the specs, Thanks to the folks at android forums, but its not the actual phone that im having a problem with, Its the data speeds. Its like having a Lamborghini with a Honda Civic engine as far as connectivity speeds are concerned.

While i was there i downloaded speedtest on the 3 employees Photon's and 2 ET4G. Photon tested poorly with 500kbps download MAX. ET4G did okay, with 1400kbps download speed while on 3G. The GM insisted that they were experiencing network difficulties but i didnt want to get stuck with this device for the next 2 yrs and have to deal with dropped calls and NO Youtube while at work. ET4G never played YouTube videos like the 4G without long buffers.

Plus, i didnt want to gamble wether i was going to be able to take full advantage of EVDO rev.B when/if Sprint deploys it. Im going to wait another week or so to see what Sprint announces and wait to get confirmation on Rev b. I loved the ET4G but it has poor signal in most places i went to in Houston. Other than the signal, the phone is PERFECT!!! highly reccommend it if you dont drop calls and get DATA connectivity.

I live in Houston also (Sugar Land) and I have never dropped a call on this phone in the suburban areas of Houston and in the Metro areas. Also my 3G and 4G is awesome compared to my old Epic and EVO in some places.

If I return this phone, and I might it won't be because of the phone, it will be because of Sprint. I have had just terrible luck with Sprint so far, I drop calls on whatever phone I am using at my house. Be it the Photon or the Epic Touch. I went Indianapolis's big mall this weekend, and both my wife and myself could not get internet and could barely make a call. She has the EVO 3d.

The phone for me has been absolutely amazing, it will be sad if I return it. But for me the service isn't there, glad others don't have problems though.

I will probably pick up the Galaxy S 2 on AT&T, I will miss the bigger screen and the notification light though.

I haven't had any reception (call) problems out of the ordinary with the ET4G.
The data speeds are a joke for the most part, sometimes I get great 3G at work and other times it is lousy.

As VGPOP stated, it is irritating when enabling 4G... it will constantly disconnect at times. It will make an attempt to connect, but after the first time it will just stay in sleep mode and never re-connect or attempt to without manually doing it.

I'm excited about Sprint's Q1 2012 LTE rollout plans, but it doesn't mean anything until it actually happens.

I never planned to sign up with Sprint, but it just so happened to be because AT&T and Verizon wanted $500 deposit up front plus activation, and I forgot how much T-mobile wanted.
Sprint didn't require any deposit.
This is the hand I was dealt and trying to make the best of it.
Either Sprint will expand its 4G buildout or suffer to exist, plain and simple.

Bottom line is this...in almost every initial batch of phones, there are bound to be a few bugs. Evo3d had it with its weak external speaker and not so great at times call quality, there installed movie app not working and not so great 4g connectivity (which since then an update ota released helped fix the problem). The photon had it inspite of awesome call quality and connection radios....still had beyond annoying issues with its sleep of death and random reboots (which was fixed with an update as well)and music app not always working properly. So yes the et4g is bound to have something wrong with it. In my case nothing is wrong with my unit. Works and i have yet to find anything worth complaining about. But if the stresser of just data, then it may be a network thing and not just the phone. And even then, it could have been exchanged for another one. Because honestly, with all of the complaining that is being done in this topic page, If you look at other phone forums and things they complaining about with their phones and compare..... You will see that the e4gt has far less to complain about then what others are dealing with.

And to answer a 3g question.. The green and orange 3g only happens when you are actively using data..otherwise its just grey.

this whole rev b hoopla has caused real damage and made otherwise reasonable people go batsh*t over the epic tough 4g. It is causing people to do stupid things and make bad choices.

I say this here and now, if the primary reason for not liking the epic touch 4g is not having rev b, whether sprint implements it or not, you need to switch to verizon or at&t. Those managers were right to look at the OP cross eyed, it is no different from say a car dealer get a customer wanting to return his car because he discovers it does not support flex fuels, forget the fact in nearly every other way it is a best in class machine, irrelevant, the primary issue is that not having flex fuel support. Are flex fuels actually being implemented in greater numbers at gas stations? (crickets)

This is madness, it has caused a frenzy, and the most fickle among us have essentially tossed out a diamond because someone hinted that their diamond didn't glint in quite the same way as the newer cuts. MADNESS.

"Quoted for the truth"

Frankly, I think the problem is more related to Sprints spotty coverage than anything else. I have an Air Rave in my house, and since the coverage inside for me was lousy, and now its perfect. Even outside, where I live, in the SW suburbs of Chicago, my wife and I have NEVER dropped a call...With ATT, we ALWAYS dropped calls in certain areas.
Sprint has said they are NOT going to REV B, so please stop kicking THAT dead horse..and, if you want LTE so bad, just drop Sprint and move on to Verizon, with their capped data, and horrible customer service policies

As I said, its unfortunate that only the folks with problems tend to post in the internet
I've been to several retailers to talk about the phone AFTER I bought it, and not a single one said they had a return yet, due to signal issues
I know 3 other folks who have the phone and they too love it, and have no issues.
I had 2 evo4gs, and 2 evo 3d's, and had zero issues with any of those phones; luck of the draw? Doubtful, but, after spending many years as Director of Sales for a Consumer electronics manufacturer, I know that the expected defective rate is around 2%, so, just like televisions, computers, hard drives, stereo equipment, and everything else electronic, there is no such thing as ZERO defects with anything Electronic; remember the iPhone 4 fiasco with the reception issue?

My only point is that "newbies" coming to these forums, to find out about this phone and others like it, tend to see a dis proportionate amount of complaints, and problems, and immediately are convinced that EVERY unit will have these issues; they tell their friends, who tell their friends, and next thing you know, everyone on earth either thinks the product is flawed, or, they start imagining that THEIR unit is going to develop the same problem..

Often, information gotten from the internet is taken as gospel, and, more often than not, it is nothing more than hersey..

You get 14-30 days to return this phone when you get it; if you don't love it, take it back..just don't spread doom and gloom about something you aren't truly certain about..
How about only people in denial run peoples threads about well known issues.

You obviously haven't looked around, there are tons of posts praising this phone. And relatively few problems unlike previous galaxy phones. So how about actually posting some useful information before you start whining.

With that being said, my phone had this issue yesterday, I couldn't load any pages at all, couldn't load youtube, nothing. I was even in a 4g area and neither worked. I still have a week left to return and though I had decided to keep the phone, I can't deal with that type of service. And no sprint is not entirely to blame because both my evo and evo 3d have far less problems with connectivity.

excellent point, it may deter people from buying this phone, and honestly I ordered the phone recently from ebay and then read this forum, and got slightly discouraged, but your right, some phones will be defective, always wll be a bad batch or a bad apple. Going back to what you said about the evo 3d, I have had it two times, hoping the second time around it would be better, but with my experience the reception is not very good, and the sound is weak, even with the equilizer enabled, so that was my biggest issue, but your experience may differ, that's why we have 14 days to decide on the phone. I am just hoping my ET4g is as awesome as most people say it is on this forum!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with your phone. It's very frustrating to get your hands on a device you've been looking forward to and running into a problem. However, I think I agree with Wase here. Reading reviews on the internet for any product would lead you to believe virtually nothing works. I think this is a real issue, and I think it affects such an infinitesimal small number of people that it's not really worth reading into it. Yes, I understand forums are filed with posts like yours but that still doesn't make it a big issue. It reminds me of Apple's "antennagate." A tiny issue that was blown so out of proportion Apple had to hold a press conference just to address it.

Again, I'm not downplaying your frustration or anyone else's over this. I love this phone and if I were affected with the same issue, I'd be taking action. Which is the point - don't put up with it. If the phone doesn't work for you, take it back. And if you (by "you' I mean in general") feel that Sprint isn't handling it well or Samsung isn't, vote with your wallet.

Not to jump to any recommendations, just an observation...

Just bought 2 epic touch phones and 2 Nexus S 4G phones for me and family. Activated all 4 of them. Used phones for 4 days. Comparing to TP and TP2. Signal strength is about 86-91Dbm at home on all 4 phones, in some areas dropping to 96. Switched for a day back to TP2 and again have full 5 bars. WIFI at home seems ok, slightly weaker than TP2, but not bad. 3G dropping intermittently on all 4 phones, never had that issue on TP2. Speedtest results between 188-300 kbs on all phones in Chicago! Tested 4 phones about 5 times each during 4 day period.

Somewhat disappointed. Really like the phones otherwise. Wonder what would happen in areas where Sprint signal is not as strong. One bar still OK to make calls, but again feels like cell signal and 3g significantly weaker than TP2. Not tested 4G very much yet. Recently took a day family trip. Ran GPS nav on TP2 and ET4G (bing nav vs google nav) next to each other in the car. A few times ET4G lost 3g and attempted to roam, shutting google nav, although got signal back rather quickly. TP2 did not even blink - 3g was flawless throughout the trip.

Again, not a scientific statement, but looks like Samsung Radios are weaker that HTC, at least based on my VERY SMALL sample size.

well said. Although it does sound like he's certain about it and did his due diligence. I'm certainly not a newbie, or a HIGHLY SKILLED PROFESSIONAL, but I am knowledgeable and do my homework and am reading because I am considering trading my Evo 4g (for which I carry two extended batteries at all times) for this phone. posted on the net does not indicate gospel, just another person's opinion.

@ LxMxFxD, all of the above!.
  • Could not stream Youtube Videos without buffering to the point where you just disregard what you were trying to watch.
  • Web browsing took at least 1 minute to open the page in its entirety. (evo opens most pages between 3-8 sec)
  • Lost signal and waited a few minutes for it to return while my wife is sitting in the car next to me web browsing the web and making calls on Evo. Signal never returmed, eventually had to turn phone off and turn back on to regain signal.
  • Dropped more calls in one day than i did the entire year and months with Evo.
  • When using TIKL app, people in other states and international countries noticed and asked if i had a weak signal. It all stopped as soon as i walked out of the Sprint store with the EVO fully charged in hand. HUGE Difference!
On the other hand, while Wifi or 4g ON, YOU could not stop this phone. Its a beast. i got 20mpbs while wifi and 10mbps while on 4G.

@ Cobravision. I perfomed web browsing tests since day 1. my wife kept telling me that i was paranoid. I couldnt understand why the Evo with slower processor and specs was faster than the ET4G. I didnt wanna get rid of it... believe me i did extensive testing before returning it.

Come on now...at 350 kbps I open full web pages from scratch in a snap. Perhaps clean out the browser cache once in a while?

I have my screen set to almost max all of the time and honestly, I have not once felt it heat up. Course I'm not streaming video or playing with it.

I got my e4gt today and wanted to weigh in on this thread.

I have yet to experience the LOS error. However:

Compared to my evo4g, signal reception is very bad.

That said, I did not drop a call or lose connection or experience slowness on 4g at all.

When I said reception is poor compared to my evo4g, I say that based on bars of coverage, and didn't really quantify that into decibels today.

That said, I played with my new toy all day today and many times I picked it up and it had 0 bars. Whenver I saw this however, I successfully made calls to 1800-call-att without issue, and strangely whenever the calls went through the phone magically shot up to 3 or 4 bars of coverage.

If I had my guess, this issue is related to 4g sleeping. Somehow the software within this phone which tells the radios to go to sleep is telling the cell signal to go to sleep too... resulting in the LOS issues. This is just my guess, but from what i've experienced on MY phone, this is what is happening.

I bet if samsung releases a fix for this, it'll be just an elimination of signal sleep.. which puts us back to square 1 in terms of battery life.

In Chicago, I get great 3g and 4g reception, and I've had no reception issues whatsoever. This leads me to believe that it's just a few defective devices with problems and yes its being blown out proportion. I recommend getting a replacement before you give up on this great phone.

I know you're just trying to give good advice here, but this bad advice. There are people who have gone through 3 E4GT by returning them and/or by intentionally bricking them with no luck. I've only had my phone for 24 hours so im not one to comment about this issue, but as someone said, the radio in these phones is just plain bad compared to the likes of moto and htc. Whether its bad enough to cause LOS errors for everyone, is another matter and I would imagine, based on coverage in your particular area.

I understand where you're coming from. But to say it's the phone's radio is just not true. I'm coming from the EVO 3D, which got red hot trying to find a signal, and this phone gets much better reception for me. If it's the phone, why is mine so good?

I ran these tests in my basement where getting a good signal is tough.

Well I'm sorry to say I had the epic for a little over a week and I had to exchange it for a different phone. I really liked the phone and probably one of the best androids I ever used But I use my phone for work and the reception on the phone was just plain horrible. The data speeds were that of a dial up and I was constantly roaming. At first I thought it was the network but seeing how my wife has the evo, her phone works perfectly fine. I really wanted to keep the phone and heard they are working on a patch to fix it but I just couldn't wait.

Seriously ? I live in the western burbs of Chicago, and Sprint service has been very touchy, in my Basement Office LOL it is practically non working. And even around town in areas with full bars I am lucky to average 200k/sec down on 3G.

And with that being said, how do the calls sound when you are having said issues? Do pages still load efficiently? Or are people like "omg it took 10-15 secs for my page to load with my two bars omg this phone sucks now!" really? Be it five bars.. Or two to one bars.... I still make calls which sound clear. And i still bring up whatever pages i need to bring up. I still love this PHONE. It doesnt need to be as fast as a laptop.. It just needs to work with no hiccups, which it does!
