Root EVO/CM7 will not turn on after boot

I've been rooted for while running Cyanogenmod 7.1. When I turn the phone on, it boots up, but after about 5 minutes, the phone becomes completely unresponsive. The screen completely freezes and cannot turn off. If the screen is off, I cannot turn it back on.
So I usually have to perform a battery pull. And retry.

I've tried everything. I've wiped data/factory reset about 10 times. Wipe cache/dalvik everytime, then reflash. Boot the phone without the SD card. Used a different SD card. I've tried EVERYTHING.

I'm wondering if it is an app that I have installed that is killing me. I uninstalled Launcher Pro and that actually fixed it for a few hours, but now it's happening again while I'm using GoLauncher.

I honestly don't think it's a hardware issue.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

See if this problem occurs under a sense rom

I'll try that. The problem actually does not start to occur after a data wipe until after I restore all of my apps via Titanium Backup. So I'm wondering if there is an app in there that doesn't work well with my setup. I'll keep you updated.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Hopefully you don't have a lot of apps, because the answer is going to lie in restoring them 1 by 1 or in batches and see where the problem starts. Maybe start with your launchers only and leave it for a day or so and see if that is the problem like you suspect it to be

Yeah, I just uninstalled GoLauncher, so we'll see if that fixes it.

Also, could it be something with the SD card? I've swapped SD cards in the past, and the phone still froze, so it's not the actual SD card itself, but maybe the data that it's trying to read from the SD card? I have the SD card OUT right now, and the phone is working fine (for now).

For me, I never restore any app with titanium backup. I download them individually from the market one by one. Then after I have downloaded all my apps, I restore specific data for specific apps, ie Angry Birds;)

Maybe do a clean wipe and flash with the GApps zip and download your apps individually from the android market then restore your needed data for specific apps

Try installing apps only no data see if it it still happens. I had to do that once with miui

That's a good idea. I've done this in the past, and only restored the "data" for absolutely essential apps where I needed my saved data. Like Angry Birds. :)

But I'll try this again.

What makes me mad, sometimes it will work fine for a few days after a wipe, even after I restart a few times. But then, randomly it will freeze when I am using it, that it is unresponsive again.

Which build of CM7 are you on?

I never had much luck with the RC's. I always had better luck with the nightlies

Seeing that there has been at least 20 builds after the RC, I would try the latest nightly and see if your problem still persists

That's a great idea! I'll try that later today if I have time.

Thanks!

EDIT:: Should I do a full data wipe/factory reset when going to a nightly from a stable? I will this time since I am having issues. But normally flashing to a nightly, would you do a full wipe?

Since there are 20 different releases in between your version and the current nightly you would need a full wipe and install.

You can SOMETIMES get away with only wiping dalvik and cache when going from one version to the next when only minor modifications have been made, but you really don't know if doing so is going to give you problems or not until you try it.

Going from an rc to the very next nightly with only wiping cache and Dalvik cache would be sufficient but since your going from the rc of over a month ago, I would definitely do a complete wipe;)

Normally if you flash nightlies on a regular basis, wiping cache and Dalvik cache is all you need to do, so keep that in mind;)

+1
Cache and Dalvik cache wipe is standard when going from nightly to the next

UPDATE: I factory reset and restore my apps via Titanium Backup, but only restored the apps, not the data. It worked well for couple of weeks. Then, it froze again and after a restart I ran into the original problem and it would be unresponsive again.

I flashed an HTC Sense ROM (Fresh) and restored apps, and within a few hours, ran into the same unresponsiveness.
So here I am, once again on CM7 with a fresh install and the market doing its automatic app install.

The problem only happens when there is an SD card in. So maybe the problem is from an app that is moved to the SD card, that should not be on the SD card.

So, once again, I think it's a particular app that is causing the problem, on the SD card.

Any new ideas from reading this update?
