Help System Update process

I have just taken on my first smart phone contract. Samsung G S II through Tesco Mobile. The phone is at Android 2.3.4.

How does the system updating mechanism work - is it prompted to user or automatic?

Is it independent of the service providers policies?

I see how Application updates are dealt with but am confused about the system updating - hence my queries above. :thinking:

You have two options on the unlocked model, not sure if both apply to you. But here are the options on mine;

1. From the home screen, select settings --> about phone --> software update (top option). It will make you register for a Samsung account which allows you to receive your updates OTA.

2. Or, download Samsung Kies (I know it's the Canadian site, but the software is the same), plug in your phone, and let it update for you.

Also, concerning the OTA function, that will only work if your carrier is compatible with it, which I think with Tesco mobile it isn't.

Therefore if I was you I would always use the cable to be doubly sure.

Also, the mac version of Kies is crap and doesn't detect updates so make sure your doing this through windows.

It's a wonderful process. You'll feel like your riding a winged unicorn through Avatar with your blood on fire and the rainbow of a thousand souls cheering you in all your splendour. Perhaps.

I'm having a problem with my Samsung Account. When I go into Accounts & Sync and click onto "Samsung", it won't sync and shows no last date of synced. Whereas gmail etc all allow me to sync them. I tried deleting the account and setting up again and said only way to do that is to restore the phone and start again.

Any suggestions on how I can get the SA to sync?!?

Method 1 = 'no update available'

Method 2 = 'message to effect that updating not allowed'

Thanks for advice.
