A little OT but it really bugs me. Why are people's two and one year old smartphones on their last legs?

We pay at least $200 for these phones and as in my case usually more (full retail). THEY SHOULD LAST LONGER!

I have old flip phones that are 5+ years old and they work fine. I realize these smart phones are more advanced hence more things to go wrong but technology is also more advanced so why the big step back in longevity?

I just feel If they only allow us to upgrade at a subsidized price every two years the equipment should be able to make it.

I know I will get flamed but if I owned VZW I would allow you to upgrade every six months at a subsidized price. If you did upgrade it would subsequently reset your contract therefore locking you in longer. WIN WIN :)

Keep in mind, the average person USES their smartphone about 10 times more in those 2 years then most people used their old flip phones in 5 years. I'm on my DROID inc. probably 2-3 hours a DAY.

It's still in "good" shape, except for the battery, which is another thing a battery loses 20-30% of its capacity over 2-3 years. When your phone sat there in "stand-by" for 5-6 days and now it only lasts 4-5 that's not a big deal. When your smart phone that lasted maybe 8-10 is now lasting 6-7 that's a lot more noticeable.

With the exception of my work computer, my cell(computer) phone is by FAR my most used piece of electronics.

I'd say (like others have) that it's software related. Phones are designed to work on a specific version of software (think back.. did you ever get a software update for your old flip phone? Probably not). Now we expect to get software updates/upgrades on a continual basis and we have the code to run the phones getting more and more complicated.. inevitably, things get broken or don't work as they did on the phone at launch because the software's not a good mesh with the phone's hardware. Add on the 'skins' like sense, blur and touchwiz on top of Android and you add more variables to muddy the water even further.

Which is another reason to go for the GNex.. as the reference handset for ICS, until we move on to the J series of Android the software updates will be tailored to fit it rather than say.. the Razr.

If it does ship with ICS, that will be awesome. I preordered mine yesterday from Amazon. Supposed to be shipped by Dec 16th.

Is it wrong that all these people pre-ordering the Transformer Prime are making me want one that much more even though I have no need for a tablet....arrggh!

lol I thought I read last night at oh-dark-thirty that they blocked your AF access at work or something. Might have been someone else I was in a haze

Yup. Lol. He got blocked at work. I'm being watched. I'm planning on reading whatever I can this weekend on this SSH tunnel someone mentioned. The app is great but I miss being on the browser

Orton would be a godsend for you right now. You should be so lucky.

Ah, I don't know. I've been thinking about it. Caleb Hanie did step into a pressure cooker situation last year (NFC title game with no practice reps) and drove down the field for a touchdown twice.

This won't be a Tom Brady situation, but I think he might be able to hold down the fort til Cutler gets back for the playoffs.

Flip phones are designed to be phones, they don't do as much so there's little reason to upgrade to another phone since it'll do the same thing.

Smartphones are basically mini-computers. Computers become outdated faster than phones, and cost more than phones. Smartphone technology is rapidly progressing, with new chipsets and software every 3-6 months, so technology becomes rapidly outdated.

I see you have the browsermark benchmark on the first page but that just measures the performance of the browser right? not the phone? Is there something showing this is the fastest smartphone other then the browser's performance? Becasue I dont feel like this is the fastest smartphone based on the fact it has a good browser. Thats not how I measure my computers performance, why would i measure my phone that way?

I remember that .....god that was fun to watch some no namer come in like that and pull that off.

Couldn't agree more.

Everyone seems to be missing the part where I say I realize these phones are more advanced lol. Also that I own a cell phone store. :)

My phone is in great shape I just think that SOME of these smart phones are a little chincy.

From what I've seen on one review, the quadrant scores weren't that great, i think around 2000-2400 (I may be off). It's gpu isn't as fast as SGSII so it doesn't score as well.

Well, a 2 year old smart phone still works as a phone, and if you're considering the computer it should still work for 2 year old tasks.

It sounds like you want a future-proof smartphone, which just isn't possible with the current pace of mobile technology. If/when smartphones reach the point where (like desktops these days) there's a plateau before the next big jump in technology, then they'll last longer. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect it.
