The problem is resolved by activating speaker phone. This means that with a protective case allows outgoing sound to bounce off the sides of the speaker hole and the palm of your hand to create a echo effect for the person on the other end of the call. They hear their voice echo. You need to be an acoustics specialist to figure the exact dynamics of this phenomena but the solution, however is simple.
I haven’t tried it but opening the hole wider with a Stanley knife and possibly tapering it in should resolve the issue

The only real reason for this annoying echo on the Samsung Galaxy S2 is acoustical feedback from the speaker near your ear to the 2nd mic (default activated for noise reduction!). The time lag between for the sound to travel two times to the GSM pole and back is some hundreds of msec, so a 'nice' and clear echo is the result. I succesfully applied a perfect solution presenten by Toxicdust on the XDA forum, which can be found here: Permanently Fix SGS2 Echo and Digital Noise Reduction/Cancellation Problems - xda-developers
It takes 10 minutes and some technical guts, but then your problem most likely is solved forever!

THE OBVIOUS DISCLAIMER!!! If you take your phone apart an break it, dont bitch to me ;) As with most things, if YOUR not confidant, take to someone who IS. That being said best o' British to you!

Ah, it seems I cant post the links I wanted to but I'll try to explain.(look on .fourumxda. If your desperate)
Brand new, 5 day old BYGTI, GS2 and I had the echo. I should stress that I didn't get an echo the other person did but I suffered with their voice fading in and out. Some research on T'net and I found not only this board but many many others. It seems to be pot luck as to who assembled your phone.
What worked for me:-
I looked at the bottom mic hole and could see the light grey/white rubber surround, obvs no good. I removed the 7 small screws, carefully split the case. Then I gently redrilled the top AND bottom mic holes, just cos I was in there ;)
Then I carefully JUST trimmed the rubber surround so that it fitted properly into the slot. Reassemble, checking that the rubber surround wasnt blocking either mic hole and test.
Woohoo! Success! I rang the person who complained the most and he thought I was on a different phone! He even mentioned that my voice was clearer and there was no echo at all.

Oh and forgot to say thats NO ECHO even with the case on ;)
I hope this helps someone else in some way.

PS If someone wants to post the links for me, I still got them ;)

I did a little digging around and after having read on all these forums, talking to Rogers and Samsung, it all came down to "noise suppression". Noise suppression is on by default and, from what I've been gathering, you can only turn it off when you are in a call by hitting menu and noise suppression off....wrong!!!
If you go into settings>call>additional settings, you will see noise suppression checked on. just hit that and the green checkmark will go away and BINGO....case on....case off....no more echo for your friends when they call you....works for me.
What I don't understand is that the Rogers tech didn't know this...he thought you could only turn off noise suppression when in a call. Same result with the Samsung guy. Why don't these people know this?
i am turning off my phone as we speak to see if it goes back to suppression on when I reboot....gimme a minute.......
Rebooting now.....back to settings.....call...additional settings....noise suppression is still off....SUCCESS !!!!

WOO HOO HOO !!!

Is anyone else seeing this setting because I don't have it. The additional settings is just for call waiting, call forwarding, etc...

Having received 2 Galaxy S2's this week (one for my partner, one for me) both have the echo problem. After talking to a helpful T Mobile support member, I spoke directly to Samsung. As a consequence, I have just finished a long and detailed call with Samsung. The following are direct quotes, made contemporaneously during a conversation with Samsung support regarding the echo problem.

I was informed by the Samsung staff member,

Ok so I have picked up my Samsung galaxy s2 from Telstra harbourtown with samsungs quality assurance print out saying that the mic has been reset and it has passed all tests with flying colours, blow me down I put my cover on and make two calls and receivers are complaining on muffled/ echos on their end... I took back the phone 16 hours after picking up the so called fixed phone. Telstra harbourtown is sending it back again, funny thing is no one has thought about foregoing the monthly handset charge that I am paying.
This is absolutely ridiculous and is a very bad PR issue for Samsung one would presume. I will you all updated with the second round of Samsung repairs.
