Help Broken Evo Charging Port Thread, Lets Track This Issue

update to my post, guys at a sprint repair store say it will only be $35 for me to replace the phone with a refurb, even tho I dont even have insurance. Not what I wanted tho I rather keep my phone, even tho they were pressuring me to do it saying "Your phone is not charging at all, so we're giving you a choice: take your broken phone home or get a new one for $35".
I took my phone back. All my info was still on it and they just wanted to switch it with me for whatever reason besides making money. And my phone charged all night too despite their bs claims cause I knew it would charge at a specific angle.

I found that gravity worked when my charging port was broken, place your phone near the edge of a desk, or dresser, or what ever, just close enough that the cable does NOT touch the surface, but hangs of the edge. now press lightly on the cable with one finger, close to where it connects to the phone until the charging light turns on. If you let go, it should remain charging. you can get a spare battery and charger for less than $30, BUT you have to take the back cover off EVERY time you change it out (wearing out another part of the phone), went with the SEDIO extended battery, thinking it would last longer... I can still kill it with 6 hours heavy use.

My "refurb" replacement (my original was in brand new condition, no case ever used, when I "swapped" for another) has a TON of dust under the screen, you cannot see it when the screen is on, unless in a dark room and the backlight is low. But it looks horrid when the backlight is off. the screen is actually "raised" all the way around, where my original was only raised on the bottom at the lower buttons.

I am glad I swapped it though, since Sprint killed the 1 year upgrade. (mine broke in sept/oct 2010 (launch day pre-order model), and I dealt with it until christmas. I had originally planned to "deal with it" until june and "upgrade" to whatever was available. Lucky I did not...

ebay on the cheap...

Two huge batteries (chinese) and extended battery doors plus a charger ($15 shipped):

2X 3500 MAH EXTENDED BATTERY & CHARGER FOR HTC EVO 4G | eBay

2 1500ma (chinese) batteries and a charger for $12.50 shipped:

2x 1500mAh Battery + Dock Charger for HTC Evo 4G SPRINT | eBay

These cheap batteries are very liberal on the ma rating. I have the 1800 to 2000 ma ones and so far they seem to last at least and long as the stock battery.

Friends have have real good luck with the 3500ma batteries. If you can't charge directly it might be worth the 'fat back' to charge less often.

I'm in the same boat. Other than the annoyance of data transfer issues via USB and the inability to charge the phone in the car via USB I really have NOT been too inconvenienced with having to charge with a wall charger and swapping batteries out if needed.

Here is my suggestion/experience with spare batteries...

If you search on ebay for "EVO battery" you'll find a TON of batteries shipped directly from Hong Kong/China for free shipping and a charger. I picked up 2 batteries and a charger on ebay for just under $10 even BEFORE I had port issues...thought it was a good idea to have a spare battery (or 2) charged at the ready. The batteries were supposedly rated 1450 mAh (I think..or was it 1750??). You'll see them all over the place if you search ebay...they are "generic looking" black and white batteries. Anyway, those batteries lasted a few months until they failed to hold a charge. Was ONLY $5/battery so wasn't too pissed about the life of the battery.

Well I now needed another spare battery or two...ESPECIALLY because of my now broken port ...did some research and instead of getting more of the "standard/generic" looking batteries on ebay, I decided to "upgrade" and go with a couple of GALILIO 2000 mAh batteries!! Better reputation than the "generic" batteries and upgrade to 2000 mAh with a STANDARD SIZE battery!!

At the time I think I paid $22 for the 2 batteries and a charger on ebay. If the link below works, you can now get a couple (or 3) for around $15 or so:

1
evo galilio | eBay

If the link doesn't work, just go to ebay and search for: EVO galilio

I'm VERY happy with the batteries I got...still holding a great charge and the increased mAh is great!! I was running rooted stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM...would wake up and put in a fresh battery in the morning around 730am and use my phone "as I normally would" during the day. I would be down to about 10% around, say, 4-5pm depending upon my use. I would then swap out the battery which would last overnight until the next morning. For the past week I have been running MikG v2.52 ROM and without any kernal upgrade, I use the same battery during the day, plugging in at 730am and ROUTINELY don't have to swap out the battery until 11pm at night...about 16 hours of "normal use" for me...good stuff!!

So, if you want a nice mAh upgrade without the need for the big silly 3500 mAh huge cover, I recommend the Galilio 2000 mAh...

A thought. I'm on my second phone .... the problem with the port was the reason for the original switch some time back (6-8 months, have had the phone since it originally "dropped" on the scene) and my other main beef was the battery life or lack thereof .... I bought extended batteries (2) on Amazon for 6.90 apiece and both came with backs to accommodate the extended battery and the batteries fit my after market charger.

price has gone up, Xitech ... from amazon ... now 7.04
Amazon.com: HTC Evo 4G 3500mAh Extended Battery + Cover: Cell Phones & Accessories

Working well, on a rare day I use two of them. I also charge when I can at work and I do hammer the phone for use when not in the office. And ... I keep looking but can't find another phone worth switching to ....

Hi, I was got Two EVO 4G (per-order) and one of them had over-heating issues and was exchanged at no charge. Both my EVO 4G are HW 0003 and one of them has the loose micro USB port (the charging port). My phone are scratch free and always been in a protective cover since day 1.

I took the phone to my local Sprint store and the tech opened it up and pulled out the USB port with forceps (was slightly loose and forced it apart in-front of my eyes) and told me that the phone is broken and damaged beyond repair (unethical practice by the service tech/store). Last thing you want to do is have the Sprint tech open your phone.

The phone was used normal and there was no abuse what so ever. This is HTC design problem and they ought to own up to it. I am a hardware design engineer and know that this is a bad design. The USB port is weak and not secured properly. Also HTC have a heating problem when charging which could make the solder contact weak.

I talked to Sprint and HTC support about the issue. Sprint is at fault that they need to go back to the manufacturer HTC and have this HW issue resolved. Can't really blame Sprint; it's HTC issue and they should fix the phone. HTC is in total denial about inherent design issue with the way the USB port is installed. Although I like the phone but after knowing HTC ethics I am not buying HTC anymore.

Hey guys, I am new here and my girlfriend and I just signed up with Sprint and we both picked up a Evo 4G. Our hardware version is 0004 (Mine is White, her's is black) and I am curious if this problem has been fixed on these phones or is it something we have to worry about? This forum seems to be a great place to get questions answered and I look forward to spending more time around here. Thanks in advance!

The charge port on my Evo doesn't work.
Should I unroot it before I go in to the store for a replacement or do they care?

Based off the posts here, and yes I've read all of them, you have an 80% chance of being turned down when rooted, although the odds seem to move in your favor each day, I guess more employees are rooting and so overlook it.

My wife and I both have an HTC EVO 4G.
I thought the port charger not charging was my fault at first because typically I break every phone I own. But, my wife is the opposite with hers. It never leaves her desk and looks brand new and the usb / charger keeps disconnecting.

Will Sprint replace the ports (or phone) or is there a fix?

I do believe the problem with the port thread is a problem with the EVO. I have had a total of 5 EVOs replaced on my account. There are only 3 phones on the account. We take very good care of our phones and chargers, but continue to experience these same problems. I love my EVO, but I will probably upgrade to a different phone due to these problems.

So sprint can't say "Its the users fault" because you know dam well its not. If you have a loose or broken port please post here and try to include your hardware version 2 or 3 and your build dates. Frankly im sick and tired of HTC and Sprint passing the buck about there faulty equipment.
I am on my second Evo 4g and like the first...it quit charging. Surprise....Surprise!!! Well, it will charge but I have to hold the charger into the port really hard manually. But, I know the drill...it will completely go out before long. It is a known issue with Evo 4g's and their poorly designed charging port so any of you who are thinking "Maybe it is just you dropping it or tripping over the cord while it is plugged in" can rest assure that it is not us. There are way to many complaints about this phone for it to be "us"....plus who in the world would defend Sprint or HTC after all the controversy that they are involved in right now with the CIQ crap. Yeah, I'm a little pissed...they are selling faulty phones and tracking us and we are paying a fortune for their service which does not even include 4g in most of the country...OOPS...kinda got off the subject there...anyway, so I am going to have to pay YET another $100.00 to get another phone....and by the way, can someone tell me how a refurbished sticker got inside my "new" phone that was sent to me after the first port went out and after I pay monthly for insurance and paid the $100.00 dollar deductible? So...I suppose I will pay another 100 for a refurbished phone that they are selling as new. Yeah...that is messed up crap if you ask me....

Welcome to the forums!!!

Ok, the welcome was all smiles, but I feel your pain. I know how frustrating dealing with Sprint can be. I really don't think if you are paying for the Sprint insurance you should have to pay $100 for a new one. It should only be $35.
I don't have the insurance, but when I had my old Hero replaced I only had to pay $35, and I don't have insurance!!
I would complain to Customer Service about that one. Bump it up the chain a few times, as for a manager. Complain but keep your cool, be firm. Or try a local store. I get a great deal from a local store I go to all the time. ;)

My port quit working last night, so with the evo being so old now and with sprint still trying to price gouge me on a new e4g and the e3d I am just going to wait for the galaxy nexus to come out. I am due for an upgrade the 1st of April, and in the meantime I have an external battery charger. But it's not worth it to me to have to spend hours on the phone with sprint trying to get them to fix a 2 year old phone for less than $100.

It sucks because my evo has been a great phone, but I had the 1st build evo so I've had all of the build issues that these phones have had since they came out (screen separation, broken port..etc..) It will be nice to see if I like having a non-htc phone.

My EVO 4G is having the same issue with both home and auto chargers. However, I can say that it isn't just an HTC issue. My wife and kids all have LG Optimus S phones, and 3 of the 4 are having the same mini-usb charging issues. My son literally has come up with a way to prop his up on a book and have the cable ran a certain way to ensure connection.

While each manufacturer should take care of their paying customers and fix/replace these bad units, it's definitely an industry issue......
