A monkey could process an activation.... But that could offend. I didnt think they still charged those anyway... It's been years.

I was gonna say, don't they usually waive the activation fee when you pay $300 for a new phone? It's been a while for me too, so I don't really remember.

I'm just going to tell them I'm in a hurry (as I will be ducking out of work to get it ) and I will activate it myself...

No, they have to activate it. It's the only way to receive the subsidized price.

Why would it have to be activated to receive the subsidized price? You can order devices from their site at a subsidized price and they don't ship activated (which is what I normally do, I just don't have the patience to wait the whole weekend if they won't let us preorder the GN).

Now I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that if that's their in-store policy, it's pretty ridiculous. Their activation policies between their site and their store shouldn't be different.

Slightly OT:

My wife's phone was stolen at work and she is temporarily using an old phone (no internet, email or anything, just voice). I've been so wrapped up in getting my GNex and following on this forum, that I haven't researched phones for her, so I thought I'd tap into some of all of ya'lls experiences. I don't really care if it has 4g (will be awhile before we get it here), but would like one that will eventually get ICS. So which is everyone's fav? Bionic, Thunderbolt, or Incredible 2?

GNex. Was this a trick question ;)

edit: I see you were probably implying you would be buying unsubsidized. In that case, what did she have before?

I think a lot of women prefer a smaller phone than the 4.3" models and above. Have you looked at the Rhyme? It is essentially the exact same size as the Incredible. Looked at it today it's really nice (well if she likes lavender). Don't know if it will get ICS though

Incredible 2 will not get ICS. Bionic and Thunderbolt are questionable...

This will require at the very least an xacto knife or sharp scissors, as the Tbolt takes a standard SIM, and the GNex is a microSIM. It is possible to cut it down to size I believe.

Now we had this conversation about 300 pages ago when I thought I heard it was micro-sim and everyone told me it was actually full size - do we have any source for confirmation one way or another?

Hopefully clear up the activation question:

Alyssa: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
jon: Hi Alyssa. I plan on buying the galaxy nexus in store on friday morning. can you tell me if they still charge a activation fee when purchasing a new phone?
Alyssa: I'd be happy to assist you.
Alyssa: When updating your device there is no activation fee.
jon: Excellent!

To be honest, likely none of those phones are getting ICS. The Tbolt is HTC's red headed stepchild, and the Inc2 is too old/single core and the Bionic is just a mistake. Honestly, I would recommend maybe a older DX2 or Inc2 Those are fairly cheap used, and they are pretty good phones.

My understanding is that activation is how they generate the new two year contract granting you the subsidized price. I've asked a couple of sales guys a few different times if I could activate my own phone at home and that was the answer I got. Could be BS, I don't know I've never worked as a wireless rep.

As for why it would be different online, I don't know that it is. I think phones ordered online are activated with your number or a new number if you're not porting before the phone ships to you. I've ordered from Amazon and Let's Talk with new numbers, and each time the carrier sent me an email telling me the phone is being shipped and activated with the new number.
