Help Stock e-mail app

I set up e-mail (the universal inbox) on my Droid Razr. It looks good. I really WANT to use it. I like the way it has a gmail icon/hotmail icon/email icon to quickly tell which mail account the mail is from. I like the layout of the email app.

It just doesn't work though.

When I'm at home and a gmail arrives, the notification on my phone works but since I'm at home I'm going to read the email on my laptop. When the gmail is read the universal inbox notification (envelope with red M) does not go away and the mail is not marked as read. The g-mail app works but I really want to get away from using a separate apps for all email.

In addition, when I read a gmail on my phone, it is not marked as 'read' in my gmail account.

I don't reall want to use another email app. The phone already comes pre-loaded with the universal email (unable to remove this broken p.o.s.) and gmail. I should not have to download yet a 3rd app.

Has anyone else gotten it to 'just work' without having to jury rig, download 3rd apps, create imap or pop accounts? Any reason why I can't just add my gmail account and let the phone sync away?

Yeah, DO NOT use the little gmail or yahoo icons to set up those accounts. Just set them up as generic emails. Push and server sync will work just fine. When you set them up using the cute little icons, it doesn't sync right, and you may get random text messages every time you get a new message notification. There is a serious bug in the backup plus contacts app that drives that.
