Samsung Android 4.0 ICS update for Galaxy S and Tab now under review - SlashGear

So, going from the definite statement made a week or two ago about not updating the Galaxy S to ICS officially, to considering it so that's always good news. Of course, those using custom ROM's shouldn't care much since you're getting ICS anyway, but for those of you that aren't, semi-yay?

Technically, even those getting custom ROM's, after the official ICS comes out, the ROM's get updated a bit more and are polished so everyone wins.

The problem all too familiar with purchasing from Samsung is that once they sold you the hardware they can give a crap about any further support by way of updates. It really is totally unacceptable that their devices out of the box generally ship with an outdated OS, adding insult you will be lucky to get one update an even then it will be a year overdue. After that well they believe you will be so enamoured by their demonstrated lack of customer service and device support to come back and purchase new products from them with the same expectation.

Android is severly fragmented already, and no sign that any hardware vendor cares enough to ensure the ecosystem offers a total experience. Perhaps Google can step in and make it a condition that firmware upgrades are mandatory for three years, otherwise the ecosystem is forever destined to be fragmented.

Well that stinks. I guess.

Not that it really matter though; we haven't even gotten Gingerbread yet... By the time that value pack would've finally come to to the Galaxy S1 community (at the rate that updates are going), most owners would be eligible for upgrade, happily on to newer devices, and trying to forget the sour after taste their Galaxy S1's left them with.

Value pack or no value pack, its no skin off my back.
