Root Upgrade a rooted HTC EVO

Hi,

I rooted my old HTC EVO over a year ago and subsequently gave it to my wife after I picked up a new phone. Now I'd like to upgrade her to the newest version of Android, but I realize I have no idea what steps I followed to root her phone and what I should do to upgrade her.

It seems all the tutorials out there are for rooting phones that haven't been rooted yet. Is there a simple way for me to upgrade an HTC EVO to the most recent Android release? I think I used unrevoked the first time around, but I'm not even sure of that.

Do you want to upgrade her to gingerbread(been out for a while) or Ice Cream Sandwhich ( just came out)

If GB, we can easily do that

If ICS, we can easily do that as well, but the ROMS arent stable yet and I wouldnt suggest using them as your daily driver.

I want to keep her on Gingerbread.

I love ICS on the Galaxy Nexus, but don't want to give her something unstable or lacking in features.

Personally, I would put MikG on her phone. The link to version 3.0 can be found in my sig. You may have to create an account for the mikmik forums to get the link, but the rom is fast, cool, stable, and has 100% functionality for everything. You can't go wrong. Do you remember what recovery you have? If you haven't touched it, you probably have clockwork mod. I would recommend putting Amon RA on your phone (link is also in my sig).

Did you make a nandroid backup when you originally rooted your phone?

Here's what I would do

1) Download MikG 3.0 and the PC36IMG.zip file for Amon RA. Please both of them in the top level of your SD card (also known as the root of your SD card, so not in any folders). Also, do NOT unzip either of these files. Keep them in zip format. For your Amon RA file, it is very important that the file be named exactly PC36IMG.zip but it should be named that already when you download it.

2) Power off your phone. Hold volume down + power until you see the white screen and when it asks you to update, select yes (it will install Amon RA onto your phone). Select no when it asks you if you want to reboot and then boot into recovery. Make a nandroid backup of your existing setup. You can do this by going to backup/restore and choose backup. Select all of the checkboxes and wait for it to finish your backup.

3) After it's done, you want to go back to your main recovery menu and begin wiping. Go to the wipe menu, and wipe everything *EXCEPT* your sd card. Go ahead and wipe SD-EXT if you ever partitioned your SD card, but DO NOT wipe the SD card. But wipe everything else, and do it twice for good measure.

4) Now your phone is good and clean. Last thing to do is flash your MikG 3.0 zip file. There is an option for "flash zip from sd card" on your main menu. Select that and find MikG 3.0 and flash away. Reboot and you're done.

I been checking around to find the best Kernel to run with MikG3.0 any suggestion?

I'm running anthrax but stock, freedom and chop suey are all good. You just have to flash and see what works best for you. Be sure to run each kernel for about three days so it has time to fully settle.

Unfortunately, I don't know what recovery I have. Is there a way for me to check?

I did not make a nandroid backup when I originally rooted my phone. I did it more than a year ago, and I don't remember the rooting guide I used telling me I should.

Likely you used Unrevoked to root your phone and your hboot version is 2.10 or below. I would read through the Rooting for Dummies guide found here. It will refresh your memory on how you got rooted and what to do after words. MikG is very stable and works well even with Sense 2.1(which was not slated for our phones). ok i followed MizzouBrent's instruccions too,after flashing the room do you recommend flashing CyanogenMod 7?,and what about free thetering,thanks a lot.

Cyanogen is a completely different ROM than mikG. You can only have one ROM on your phone at a time (yeah yeah yeah, bootmanager, but for now this is a conceptual thing

)

Free tethering is included in MikG. Its the sprint hotspot app. Its been hacked to work for free

Have you thought about unrooting the phone? Does your wife actually use any rooted features/programs? If not, it may be easier for you to unroot the phone and just let her use the stock android from sprint. That way she could just accept the ota updates(if we get any) as they come and wouldn't have to worry about stability, etc.

edit: hopefully I didn't come off like an arse. I don't mean anything by it, but sometimes I see people on here who are rooted but don't ever use the benefits and just think they would be better off unrooting. Either way, it's a great phone and the people here can get you to where you need to be.

I agree with this also My daughter (27 yrs old) wanted her phone rooted but then never wanted any changes. so i unrooted it so she can just do the ota s and take it in to sprint when ever she has a problem. being rooted just wasent right for her.
