Well after checking out the Razr Maxx the other day, I basically wrote it off and was going to continue on with my Nexus. Well this weekend kind of changed all that!

First and foremost, I have no idea whats going on with signal strength and the Nexus. Holy Crap....I cant hold onto a 4G signal for nothing! I just got a replacment Nexus from VZW because my previous one was basically rebooting about 3 times a day, signal strength was absolute hit or miss in strong 4G areas, and my battery life was just getting out of cintrol.

Well my new Nexus came the other day, looked good...Popped my battery in, set it up, Wooo Hooo...all good right? NOPEEEEE...Phone rebooted twice in the first hour, mind you I have hardly any apps on this thing...And worst of all, the signal strength is even worse with this one. Even with a new sim card!

So this morning after having extremely spotty 4G coverage and just 3G...All while my Dad was right next to me with his Droid Charge and Two bars of 4G...I decided to just pick up the phone and order a Droid Razr Maxx.

I have no idea whats going on with the Nexus, I love the phone, I love ICS, but I just cant deal with the BS no more, and these pop up problems.

Either way my Maxx will be here tomorrow. and I will post thoughts over the next few days...

I did the same thing Sean. I still have the Nexus and may go back to it if they get it straightened out through a software upgrade, but I got fed up with not being able to use it when I needed it. The Maxx is much more reliable. It doesn't have ICS and is not as flashy, but it works great -- especially with 2.3.6. 2.3.6 greatly improved the 4G connectivity over 2.3.5. It is an unofficial right now, but only has one minor issue. It seems likely that it will be the upcoming update from VZW. As for the Nexus, I kept waiting for the update, but it does not seem that it is even close.

I'm starting to believe that an update won't even help the Nexus with connectivity. If it has a bad radio (my worst fear) then an update won't help one bit.

I agree on the I just need my phone to work statement! At this point I just want my phone to work when it should. And yes the Maxx is not as flashy as the Nexus, and form factor to me is light years better on the Nexus...But I just couldn't take the BS issues anymore...

Well very glad to hear a fellow Nexus owner is Fairly Happy with the Razr Maxx..

I am happy with the Maxx. ICS is nice, but I really do not miss much going back. The only thing that I miss is the ability to create folders on the homescreen. It will be nice when the Maxx upgrades. The screen on the Nexus is about all I miss. The screen on the Maxx is very good, but not quite as good as the GNex.

Let us know what you think when you get your Maxx.

Just switched from Nexus to MAXX and couldn't be more pleased. On the Nexus with the extended battery, I would get maybe 15-20 hours standby with about 2-3 hours of display-on time before the battery died. First charge with the MAXX got me 43 hours standby with 7 hours of display-on before I hit 10%.

Well I received my Maxx today, popped my sim in, and went in full speed ahead.

Here's how I feel so far...

Pros...

Wow...Signal strength is what a 4G phone should be! A Steady 3 bars while inside, haven't lost a data signal since I popped the sim in.

Phone is fairly snappy, and call quality is pretty loud and clear.

Lol...battery is just plain bananas! I did my whole set up, then messed around for about an hour straight, surfed the web a little, watched 2 you tube videos, sent out maybe 8 text messages, had a full 10 min conversation, all while the brightness was at 100%....battery went down 20%....went from 60% down to 40% in I'd say about an hour and a half of straight hard core Heavy use... That is probably the most impressive thing about the phone. My Nexus would have dropped down about 60% with that type of use.

Cons...

Damm you Gingerbread...hello its almost Feb 2012! Ice Cream Sandwich should be the only Version of Android rolling on phones coming out now.

No 720p screen! Some will say big deal, its still a Super Amoled. But if you've seen the screen on the Nexus and used it for a lil bit you'll understand that its just beautiful and crisp and the difference is pretty big.

Camera! Thumbs down Moto...come on! Can't you get your crap together? Yes the cam ok shots, but not all the time, and the lag to focus is annoying. I owned the Bionic and the original Razr...the lag has decreased from both and has improved...But its still there, and in my eyes the Nexus takes better, faster shots.

Those are my initial feelings so far! We'll see how the next few days go.

Well that was fast...lol

The Maxx is all packed up and going back to VZW.

To be honest its a fine phone the Maxx, if battery struggles are a main concern to you, Get this phone!

But as a Nexus owner, I can't give up the 720p screen and ICS....just can't do it!

And as a person who speaks on the phone a lot...I gotta say, the Nexus to me sounds louder and clearer...Hands down!

So either way, I'll make due with my Nexus for now and see what Mobile World Congress brings ...

LOL...I just did the exact same thing. I loved the battery life on the Maxx but the pros of ICS won out. There were several other issues that led to my decision also. I could not make myself not see the black splotches on the maxx's screen. Another thing I noticed was that, even ignoring the gnex soft buttons, the gnex screen is bigger than the maxx's (even with the buttons on, the length of the viewable area is the same but the gnex screen is wider). I was also annoyed by the upside down north/south on the compass and some stutter in the Netflix app (which is probably just because of the HD Netflix on the maxx not liking my crappy home wi-fi).

All in all, both are nice phones so it really comes down to individual preference.
For me, the Nexus won out but I will miss the battery life and superior (to my ears anyway) external speaker on the maxx.

This article was proven false, FYI: Fear Not: Google Will Still Support The Verizon Galaxy Nexus | TechCrunch

I got a MAXX and I love it. But ugh, a couple big cons:

1. Gingerbread is just so ugly and dated. I can't believe a top of the line phone is shipping with it.
2. The camera is the worst camera in any smartphone i've ever owned
3. Screen blotches. Ugh.
4. Battery is actually SLIGHTLY disappointing to me although much better than Nexus.

I can't decide which phone to keep.... sigh.

I went Nexus...is what it is! GB is soooooooooo outdated IMO

Sean, you are probably the biggest Android fanatic on here!
Thanks for a nice quick review on the device. I have the say, the battery really is a huge thing for me. My wife (has my old Bionic) and I were out the other weekend and both our batteries were tanking. It was a bit unnerving not being able to make it through the day with very moderate use. However, after using Blur on GB, which honestly isn't too big of a skin, ICS is just so much more refreshing. It's purely clear that no ROM dev. is theming it much. This is what Android should be!

As I have said, I will probably go back to the Nexus if it gets a decent update. Two things will make me stay with the Maxx for now. 0% Time Without Signal compared with 10% to 40% on the Nexus in the exact same locations and a battery that will go two to three days without charging. The Nexus will last one day at most. Any significant use or if you are in an area where it struggles to get a signal (see above) and you will not make it through the day. The Nexus and ICS are very sleek, sharp and "pretty." The Maxx is not quite as showy, but it works when the Nexus does not. The Maxx needs the update to ICS and the Nexus needs an update to make it work reliably. I hope I am proven wrong (because I would love to go back to the Nexus), but I have more confidence that Moto can get ICS working on the Maxx than I do that Samsung can fix the radio and battery issues on the Nexus.
