MMS Question

Is there any other way to prevent from having to download a picture in MMS? This is probably the only thing I miss about the iPhone is that the picture comes through without having to wait to download. Even more frustrating if you are on AT&T, then it takes twice as long :(

Can we have picture message come in like an iPhone is what I am trying to ask :)

Yes that's a very good question. Does anyone know if that's been rectified in ICS?

I'm not sure I understand the question, but here is my interpretation:
  1. You recieve and MMS
  2. Open Messaging app and the photo is there with the message

I have had OG Droid, Droid 2, and now the GNex (with ICS) and haven't had a problem on any in general. Sometime in low signal areas I get the download photo button and this has occurred from Eclair all the way through Ice Cream Sandwich. This maybe happens on one of a thousand MMS messages (I have a four year old son and my wife and I work opposite schedules, so we send a lot of pics back and forth).

If I am misreading the question, please let me know.

On an iPhone when someone sends you a picture it is there. On android you have to click the download button in the message in order to retrieve the picture, it doesn't come through automatically.

As I said in my post I usually have the picture without having to click a download button. I have only had Moto Droid based phones on Verizon and used custom ROMs for those phones until now, so maybe other manufacturer / provider users have had different experiences.

I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, my wife is using an HTC Rhyme, and we both normally receive the picture without having to do any extra steps.

Once in a while I have had to click the download button (although very rarely). Most often when it happens is when the MMS is coming from a user with a "dumb phone."

I don't have every Android device so I'm not sure which devices have the issue. Yours might show mms pictures as soon as you get them, but SGS2 I know has a download button for mms pictures you receive. I was wondering if ICS lets users view pictures instantly.

The Galaxy Nexus is the first ICS phone and I receive pics immediately without having to click a download button. I was trying to highlight that I have used many phones / ROMs. It may be a touchwiz thing (which I have no experience with). I'm not sure. Keep looking around on the forums and I'm sure you'll find and answer.

For the SGS2, open messages app>menu>settings>scroll down to MMS settings>put a check on "auto-retrieve". It may have been disabled by default.

I have a Galaxy S, and I can't remember if it was disabled when I first got it, but first thing I do whenever I get a new phone is explore ALL the menu's and settings everywhere. LOL.

Ah yes the settings menu! I use Handcent and there's a setting to auto-download as well. Works great!

Hmm...I have a question. if I do not have a data plan, and someone sends me a photo in a text does that mean I cannot open it? I have tried downloading it, but don't get anything - or at least I don't see anything, and it doesn't appear in my downloads folder.

If you have access to internet, you can see them, but it will cost you. The picture messages go through 3G not text, or voice. Otherwise, you can't.
