So...I went and picked up the Huawei Mercury at the local corporate Cricket store yesterday morning...after calling every single one in the Phoenix valley area. Was $249 and does NOT come with either a sd card OR headphones. The sd card is not such a big deal since I do still have the one from my Ascend..and the headphones are fine since it has a 3.5 mm jack instead of the little p.i.t.a. jack that came with the Ascend.

With those two letdowns being said, everything else is COMPLETELY as expected, possibly even exceeding my expectations. The 4 inch screen is crystal clear and the resolution makes everything look as crisp and fresh as can be. I have already loaded the phone up with apps and widgets and it hasn't even thought about slowing down i.e. scrolling speed, browsing, app launch, etc. The UI has some Cricket touches but you can tell that Huawei worked really hard to make it as streamlined and user friendly as possible. The 8 mp camera with LED flash takes quite possibly the most clear pictures I have ever seen on a phone...and the front camera works AMAZING for Skype..the sound quality for voice calls and Skype is great as well. The speaker isn't as loud as I would have expected, but nothing the Volume+ app can't fix (only setting it to +2 makes a world of difference).

As far as the memory/processor/video capabilities, I have had no problem playing any of the 3D games, or OpenFeint games like Guerilla Bob and Pocket Legends...The default Music app has some changes that I'm sure most will like, comes with app2sd already default and a built in task manager, and has more than enough space in the phone RAM to keep this phone running smoothly and efficiently. To put the battery life into perspective, I started at 85% around 12:30 and used Wifi, Skyped, downloaded, played games, and listened to Pandora the ENTIRE time and it didn't hit 10% until 6:30 am...I'm sure if you are just using it regularly the battery has potential to last at least 2 days without charging...especially once the brainiacs get this thing rooted. There is also a built in Power-Save mode that you can use if the battery gets low to keep it going even longer until you are able to get to an outlet.

All in all, on a 1-10 scale I would rate this phone a 9. Everything on it is absolutely amazing and it's almost better than I had expected it to be. I would recommend this phone to ANYONE with prepaid...don't end up kicking yourself in the behind because you doubt the phone... If any of you have any questions or want to see pictures just let me know!

Thank you! I'm thoroughly loving it. Here's an update on the review: the netflix app looks absolutely amazing..plays videos as good as a ps3 or laptop would. Apparently they fixed the bleedover from the screen to the buttons that was mentioned in earlier articles. Also I just tested and confirmed that the phone DOES have multitouch...time to play some SNES.

Awesome review! Thanks for sharing your experience with it so far! And welcome to Android Forums!

I guess the higher end phones dont get an sd card or head phones on either Cricket or Metro. I got neither with my Esteem.

Hope you enjoy your new phone!
My Samsung Galaxy Indulge from Cricket came with a 2gig micro sd. Swapped it for an 8gig I had lying around.

There is a way to root the Merc. Someone said the root method for the LG Esteem (I think) works for the Merc. Another said the Admires root method works, its up on all things root.

I want to start out by saying this is a much needed upgread from the the base model huawei. And the mercury proforms nicely. I'm just wondering if any one else is having a program with the cameras... any time I try to get the front camera to turn on the phone tells me the app quit working and to forces close the app. And then will not come on again until I restart the phone. Witch by the way is super quick to come back online. And then ill try again sometimes it will come on with the front camera, sometimes it will tell me the app needs to be forced closed , again I restart the phone and begain the process again... when I get it to come on the pictures are nothing but amazing! And I'd like to think its just a bug an app will fix and not my phone. I'm open to any suggestion or comments on the problem. Thank u for reading. PS. IV been listening to Pandora for about 3 hours and browseing the net to fix this and my battery is still full!

DITTO!
I work for a major cell phone company's customer service center and this makes me even more skeptical and wary of spending $200 or so freakin' dollars on a PHONE when rent is due in two weeks. This phone was worth is to me. I've slowly moved up the Cricket ladder over the last two years, starting with their $9.99 samsung u340, then to an LG Chocolate 1 flashed, then to an orange LG env 1 also flashed and both of which I used to used for years with Verizon prior. Then I bought the MSGM8 (second series) and liked it a lot but was lured by the TXTM8 (third series) and loved it for a year. My virgin experience with smartphones was the Ascend 2 and it did not disappoint. The Ascend 2 cemented my love for smartphone technology and served as the major drive in my obsessing for the Mercury. As I've slowly moved up the food chain of cell phones with Cricket I've noticed it's the little conveniences that each phone prior to it lacked, that make ALL THE DIFFERENCE! The Huawei Mercury is the single best smartphone I've ever seen on the prepaid side of this biz. It's the little things it has built in that really make it worth using. (I have not tried out its hotspot and tethering capabilities nor do I junk up the phone with unnecessary apps and downloads and I won't even pretend to root this phone. It works just fine the way it is for us regular peeps.) I would highly recommend this phone for all your regular smartphone needs.
