Help Greyed out signal bars recently?

Has anyone else had the grey signal bars alot recently? For the last week or so my signal bars pretty much stay greyed out where before they were blue. Is there something I can do to fix this? I keep trying to switch on airplane mode but that doesn't seem to fix anything.

Thanks for any tips!

I have noticed this yesterday and today as well. Was getting beautifully blue data-connected bars in both 4G and 3G but for some reason recently, it's dumping into greyed out bars. To my knowledge, this means that the data connection is not activated. Generally, I'll use the airplane mode toggle trick to try and get it going again.

@OP, does this happen after a usual action for you? Say someone leaves a voicemail or what not?

Not really, it just sort of seems to happen randomly. For instance, the bars were grey for the last hour then I made a phone call and now I have 3 blue bars of 4g. It also seems to happen a lot when switching from wifi. Never had this problem this bad until last week and was hoping maybe the last outage was the culprit...

Blue bar means all is good for data use. It's connected and authenticated completely.

Grey bar with 3G/4G icon means it's connected but google service is not authenticated yet. you can still use internet but google service is down.

Grey bar without 3G/4G icon means only 1X voice/text signal is active and data connection is down.

Grey bar happens when network outage hits your area. Also sometimes Nexus takes a while to switch over radios and it displays grey bars while completing radio switch.

In the past two days, on two occasions, my Nexus has NEVER completed the switch and sits there WITHOUT a data connection. Drives me crazy because I'm missing emails. Just where is the 4.0.4 update so I can determine if this is a paperweight or a gold mine?
