Root question about prl

do cm7 or froyocream or any other custom roms have prl mods in them already. i heard it can boost your download speed. wouldnt the custom rods have these changes already. i know this is probaly a dumb question but ive had a mt for 1 month been running custom roms since day 1 the reception/download is about the same as stock rom.

I've mastered the PRL swap & it's easy as hell with the guide i wrote, I have multiple different PRL's & some hybrid PRL's too, let me know if your interested i'll send you some links. Mine is running on a sprint PRL with the edited build prop., I definently can tell there's a difference in my 3g speeds for the better. :D

you MUST be on stock or the anycut shortcut won't be there or for the MSL i think, Are you on a stock rom with the com port mode shortcut set to diag. & USB debugging has to be turned on in settings\Applications\Development, do you have all these things in play before you do the logcat ?

Download and install aLogcat (free) from the Android Market.
Run aLogcat and set it to filter for "sec_code"
Go to your Phone apk and dial ##33284#
When prompted for the MSL, type 000000.
Now, go to aLogcat. And it should have found a "sec_code:" line with your MSL code at the end of it. It's 6 digits.

SIDE NOTE: Have your MSL code ready before you open QPST, write it down

EDIT: Also install QPST 2.7 on your PC to do to the PRL swap, the guide should help with this

Here's the QPST link http://www.x-drivers.com/catalog/flash/mobile_phones/companies/qualcomm/models/qpst/12051.html

Are you sure sprint is usually like 01112 or 01115 & my Verizon prl's all start in 6 something as does VM so that ain't really saying much, The hybrid PRL I have I think starts with a 6 as well but it's Verizon & Sprint combined.

So is it the newer the prl the better? Seems like they would just add new towers or whatever. But I read so much on this stuff in the last three days, I just finally did it with the newest prl I saw above 60685. 3g is actually running awesome. I also added a code in the system folder though, but I definitely see a difference from the prl as well.

But... from what I read, everyone pretty much just says do your own testing, and see what works since there is no guarantee in better performance. I was just curious from what all you guys think, I'm still just trying to make some sense of it all.

I really don't know... I have done some testing between some and there were differences, but mostly not... Some wouldn't even turn on 3g and others were stuck at 1x, so I don't know how much it actually does change.

Yeah, my house is pretty poor service as well. I felt desperate enough to buy one of those sticker external antennas from the as seen on tv thing. Definitely didn't do a dam thing... lol.

I don't see many NY users, it sucks since I can't ask. I have one tower by me, and that is it according to the app I ran. It is like a mile away too sadly... And still around -110.

Stock PRL I get 1 bar always at my GFs house..switched to latest Sprint PRL and got 4. I don't think it made a big impact for 3g but did improve signal. I think all it did was allow it to connect to more towers. Wish it boosted signal at my house though lol

Check dBm next time. Bars do not give an accurate reading at all.

From what I understand the two things the prl does that could make a difference is the phones priority with the tower's it is connected and changes in non sprint or roaming towers, for better or worse. I have read that chances are prls from stock VM phones have a lower priority then Sprint phones and that prls starting with 1 are only given to buisness accounts. I'm just curious about the new prl because I have also read that sprint has been shelling out loot beefing up their 3g network because of how much they invested in the success of the Iphone.

Open Signal Maps is an app that lets you see on a map exactly which tower you are using at a given place/time. Use it before and after a prl swap to determine if you are actually connecting to a different tower.

There are just too many variables that can effect signal strength/data speed from a single exact spot at any given time, that otherwise it's all just conjecture.

PRL stands for preferred roaming list and controls which providers/towers you are allowed to roam on in a given geographic area.

It has nothing to do with enabling the usage of new sprint towers. You will automatically use them. That does not require a prl swap.

Be careful. You might lock onto a roaming partners tower and get no data whatsoever... Even though VM does not allow roaming.
