I've created a thread regarding adds before, but I wanted to ask if they could harm my Desire. I tried to root (the program gave me malware in the form of ads - which btw only show up in apps).

These are the names (according to Ad Network scanner)

- AdMob
- inMobi
- Burstly
- Millenial
-Tapjoy
-Greystripe

Besides advertising, are these businesses able to steal my phone's information and send this to companies via a network in a rootkit. I'm worried, because I resetted my phone twice and formatted my memory card and they're still in my browser history. Any help?

I don't want hackers to gain control of my phone so they can call people and I end up with a 1000000 euro bill.

- PS, I don't want to root anymore, I can't seem to do it; I've upgraded to Android 2.3 - this was suppose to unbrand my phone, but it didn't - so any insight surrouding a possible spreading of my credentials?

The 2.3 upgrade will unbrand your phone - it completely replaces your system partition, which is where the network branding lives. It won't unlock it, but that's something different.

But I don't understand how this stuff could still be there if you have actually run the 2.3 upgrade and also formatted the card. Are you sure that you ran the upgrade successfully? If you still have network branding that would imply that it failed. Can you confirm your software version?

The update was succesful, my software information:

Android version: 2.3.3
kernel version: 2.6.35.10-g3f43272

I did flash my phone with Revolutionary causing an S-OFF. perhaps this that this is causing the trouble?

No, S-Off won't cause a problem. It does give you more options to fix it though.

Follow the guide to rooting with revolutionary in the All Things Root subforum. Now that you have S-Off you can install a custom recovery and flash a new ROM. You only need to root the current ROM if you want to use Titanium Backup to back up your apps and data (do read the rooting FAQ as well, which will explain about the different types of backup). Don't rush into this without understanding what it is, but you have the most important tool already.

But I don't understand how the phone can be branded after the upgrade. Of course, being S-Off you can now delete any network-installed bloatware anyway, but do take care when removing system apps, as it's easy to mess things up! Best to install a custom recovery and take a backup using that (a "nandroid" backup) before deleting system stuff.

Thanks for your advice, do you have any recommendations for a good root method for the Desire 2.3.3?
