Hi,

I recently upgraded from the Droid X to the GNex. I love the phone, and I do like to mod. I've flashed several roms, a new kernel, new radios, and new bootloader in an attempt to get my signal strength to improve, but nothing seems to do it. I continue to miss calls (they either go to voicemail without ringing my phone (then I get a voicemail after) or they ring on the callers end several times but my phone doesn't get any indication of a missed call. This has happened in areas of good and bad signal strength). My general signal strength at home, at best, is -93dbm, but mostly sits around -100dbm, and is at -120dbm in some rooms. In all of these places, my Droid X amd my wife's *cough* iPhone get great reception (-75dbm to -83dbm). I really want to root and mod my phone, but I can't live with a phone that doesn't work as a phone. My question is.....are any of you converts from the GNex to the Razr Maxx? What do you think? How do they compare....screen (which I love), battery (no-brainier), but also ease of modding. Can I flash ICS easily onto the Maxx? What do you think of the phone in relation to your Gnex?

Thanks so much.....My "worry free" period ends in 4 days, and I need to make a decision as to whether to keep the Gnex or to go to the Razr Maxx (which is back-ordered, so I have to get rid of this phone soon no matter what). There is a rumor that the 4.05 update that is *supposed* to come in April will fix a lot of problems, but it seems most are related to 4G/LTE which we don't even have in this area. I have solid 3G data....it's just voice that's unreliable.

Thanks again!

Mark

There are ICS roms available for the RAZR Maxx. They aren't perfect, but they work. It is not as much a mod friendly phone (obviously) as the gnex. That being said, it is a way better PHONE from everything I've read. Seems the radios in the Motorola are pretty fantastic. I must say it had the best cellular reception of any phone I've ever had, bar none.

So I don't know what is more important, modding, or that your phone actually works, but the Maxx is pretty excellent as a phone. ;)

I didnt convert from a G Nex to Maxx. But I did get a G Nex to compare to the RAZR I already had. I am close to getting a Maxx if newer phones dont have increases in battery life. As unbiased as I can try to be:

Screen was better on the G Nex to me. But not so much that it was a deal breaker. Mainly because the RAZR I had was better in some areas. Like Brightness, less blue tint, etc.

Didnt really test battery life of the G Nex to my RAZR, but based on battery tests on the web...the Maxx should be amazing. Cuz the RAZR was no slouch in the battery dept vs. the G Nex.

Modding, ROMs will always be alot easier on a Nexus device. I have yet to run any on my RAZR. I didnt really run any on my Droid X1 after the GB update. Moto and their bootloaders on recent Moto phones makes for a lil more involved process.

I liked ICS overall. Compared to Blur on the RAZR, Maxx, Bionic...Blur has come a long way since 2009, 2010. I agree that ICS isnt enough of a deal breaker for me. Having ICS doesnt help me when I need a reliable phone and data connection.

My G Nex experiences ended at the 4.0.3 radios. And it did improve 3G reception, but thats it.

Like you and some others, I need my phone to be a halfway decent phone first. Phone and data reception went to the RAZR. Even compared to the Rezound...that I now have that gets stuck in 1x in weak areas and is now stuck in a boot loop. My RAZR has been the least annoying overall phone experience between all 3. So I may wind up getting the Maxx. Cuz for my wants n needs so far Moto phones are the only phones that come close what I want n need.

I had the Droid X from day one and really liked the phone, but was ready for an upgrade and really wanted 4G.

I got Galaxy Nexus and liked the phone, but like you the signal strength was terrible. I was gettting -110 to -120 dbm at home as well as missed calls. It was really frustrating so I exchanged it for the RAZR MAXX and I have never looked back.

The RAZR MAXX has been great. Getting 4G at home at -85 dbm. No missed calls. The battery lasts me about a day and a half and I am a moderate to heavy user. I also like the build quality better than the Nexus. Coming from the Droid X i am sure you will love the RAZR MAXX.

I was moving on my 4th replacement G'nex when Verizon offered the RMaxx. I was reluctant initially, because when the G'Nex was working, I loved the phone. The screen, developer support, and ICS are pluses for the G'Nex, albiet pluses only if your phone works. All of my G'nex had some combination of issues re: dropped calls/data, poor call quality, lags, random screen freezes and reboots, audio going in & out. Unacceptable on a $300 phone! No amount of reboots, factory resets, replacements, 3rd party apps etc. helped me. ICS can be had on the Maxx for tech savvy folks; otherwise, it will come. One plus for losing ICS is all my apps work without crashing. There are still some kinks to be worked out with ICS. After 2 days with the Maxx, I was missing the G'Nex screen & ICS less. The screen on the Maxx is hardly bad. The lg bezel on the Maxx kind of stinks. Waste of space, but not that important. When I compared side by side, the difference was not pronounced at all. Screen settings being equal, my Maxx is a little brighter and colors more accurate under certain circumstances. The beauty in brightness is you do not have to worry about how it relates to battery life w/ the Maxx! The battery life on the Maxx is fabulous! I would have to fully charge my G'Nex 3x+ to get what I get out of 1 Maxx charge. It's crazy good! Last but not least, the actual phone on the Maxx is great. Call quality is excellent. Everyone can quibble over pixels and software, but the Maxx smokes the G'Nex on battery, reception, call & build quality, and did I say my Maxx is faster and smoother than any G'Nex I had? It is indeed. I struggled with the decision to leave the G'Nex too, but I have no regrets after 1 week. I think you will be happy with the Maxx. Good Luck.

I also went from a DroidX to a GNex. In fact, I went through 3 GNex's because I thought that I kept getting defective phones. Signal quality was very poor. I eventually (after 45 days) purchased a new retail Razr Maxx and sold my GNex on ebay. I'm very happy with my decision. Yes I did miss ICS at the beginning, but I quickly got over it. At this point, the only thing that I miss a little is the HD screen of the GNex. Don't get me wrong; the Razr screen is not bad, but I can definately tell the difference in clarity. But I'll take a fully-functioning Razr with a standard screen any day over a disfunctional GNex with a beautiful screen!

after 3 devices and various issues, mainly call quality, email and BATTERY I am giving up the nexus in favor of a razr max. Tough decision will see how it goes when i get the phone tomorrow. going to miss the screen but the battery and loss calls have been an issue for me. Had it since Jan and nothing but problems and it was such a let down cause i wanted this phone to work! was excited for it to come out even! total let down.

I love my Droid Razr Maxx. I upgraded from the Samsung Droid Charge and I don't regret it at all. The battery life is incredible. Also the GPS just does not work on Samsung phones. All the features of the phone working is more important to me than having ICS

This... X10000!!! I have been through more phones than I care to say when it comes to smartphones...started with a Blackberry..moved on to my first Droid..and LG Ally because I "needed" the keyboard lol...then went to a Samsung Droid Charge....and all my friends were raving about the iPhone 4, so I got that...kept it all of 2 days before returning it to Verizon..signal sucked compared to my 4GLTE Charge...when I took back the iPhone, got the Droid Razr MAXX and boy oh boy!!! I'm in love!! The battery life is amazing!!!! I used to have to find somewhere to charge at least once a day...not anymore! And I'm constantly using twitter or texting or listening to music or watching videos... wouldn't trade this phone for the world!! :)
