[Verizon] Error when flashing OTA 4.0.4 update

I'm currently on stock (I believe) 4.0.2, rooted with CWMTouch installed (have also tried this with the standard CWM). Whenever I try to flash the ZIP file, I get an error that says something along the lines of "error in /sdcard/update.zip [Status 7]". Any clues as to what Status 7 means or how to fix it? Yes I've wiped both the data and the cache plenty of times as well. Also, would this sort of problem affect trying to install an official OTA update? Thanks in advance!

If you are trying to flash a new ROM in CWM recovery and you get a failure due to a (Status: 7) error, the reason is because you are either trying to flash the wrong ROM (ie: GSM or Sprint Version of the ROM) or MOST LIKELY you have installed the GSM CWM Recovery on your CDMA phone.

CWM will check to make sure that in the update.zip will be named correctly to either toro(CDMA) or the GSM version (maguro), if the other version is there, it will flag it and not flash.

As far as an official OTA, my understanding is it is uninstallable on a rooted phone and will always error out, however, I may be wrong on that part.

I take it then that I don't need to worry about the OTA coming out as this is essentially the same thing only rooted?

Right. You can always flash your way forward with root and skip the OTA's altogether.

Is that ROM based off of the actual OTA update? I have yet to delve into the world of ROMs, and have just been enjoying the ability to use root apps. I have the OTA pending but don't want to break root. My only concern is that there could be any differences between this and what actually is getting pushed OTA (other than the radios being separate).

Same exact thing.

Would flashing this keep all my apps, settings, etc. like updating would? Does this cause any problems with Google Wallet (unsupported device), or the NFL app as I've read about some other ROMs? Currently reading up on ROMs and whatnot before moving forward with anything... just barely scratching the surface so far.

It won't save your apps like an ota update would but if you're using the option on your phone to backup your data to Google servers, they should all come back from the cloud when you start up the rom and login to your Google account at the setup screen. That said, I use Titanium Backup for this purpose instead but its a matter of preference.

I haven't had the Wallet problem when flashing roms and I don't reset Wallet each time prior to flashing BUT if you want to play it on the safe side, go ahead and do that. Sorry, idk jack about the NFL app.

I made full backups with Titanium, but the upload to Dropbox and Google Drive both failed. No idea why.

I just took a backup with ROM Manager. Just to check, is there any chance of the SD partition getting wiped in flashing a new ROM?

Yeah the whole dropbox/box thing seems a little iffy yet I don't use them. Good idea on the nandroid backup and your SD partition will be fine. Clockwork leaves it alone when wiping. If you aren't already, my advice would be to perform all wiping and flashing of roms directly in cwm from here on out along with making nandroid backups for that matter. As you can tell, I'm not a huge fan of Rom Manager. Up to you though. I feel its more dependable to use recovery.

ditto on the ROM Manager app thing. What is that good for anyway? Should I just uninstall it? Everything the ROM Manager app says it does can be done in CWM recovery.

ROM Manager is an app that functions like recovery but from within the OS. Its premise is ease of use for those who don't know how to/don't want to learn how to use recovery. Thing is though, recovery is simple once you have read up and gained the muscle memory to use it to your benefit. Plus, recovery used properly will always be a success. ROM Manager is notorious for borking things.

Yep, agree with Jmar. Can't tell you how many threads I've been involved in that were related to a bad wipe/flash using Rom Manager. A few semi-handy features it provides is flashing an alternate recovery, booting straight to recovery if you're on a stock rom (many custom roms already have extra reboot options to go straight to bootloader/recovery).

RM also has the option to reflash recovery which can come in handy in a few, rare situations and you can also get new versions of CWR that way. Works fine for us, but a very dangerous prospect for certain other Samsung phones as it can and will lead to bricks. So it's kinda not something I try to promote anymore lest people get used to flashing CWR this way only to find out it makes their next phone a brick. So bottom line...not a fan.

I ended up using ROM manager to reflash CWR, and to make the NANDroid backup. But yeah, after you've booted it into recovery once... it's beyond simple.

Out of curiosity, are you folks using Touch Recovery, or just the regular CWR?

EDIT:
Heh, so I did the reset in CWR, loaded up that ROM + the radios. They loaded up just fine. I ran into problems trying to restore my apps with Titanium though. All of my apps were showing greyed out and struckthrough. Only a few could be installed. As soon as I installed any, the market stopped working. It would just crash when I tried to open it. It happened if I tried a batch operation or even one at a time, with or without app data. Not sure how to fix that...

The good news though is that the NANDroid backup seems to have worked brilliantly. I just restored it and, so far as I can tell, everything is exactly as it should be.

I hope you didn't restore play store from titanium. If you restore system apps from titanium when your on a new ROM, they won't work. Wipe data on the system apps you restored.

Sent using Tapatalk, the free one.

No, I was attempting to restore non-system apps only. But they're all greyed out and struckthrough, and only a fraction of them would actually restore.

This is strange, did you get it resolved? Once you get them all backed up, try using the verify backups option and check for errors. Man, the interface on TiBu changed again. I do like it but dang it's hard to keep up with all the constant changes.

No, I'm still trying to resolve this. I'll try moving my current backups to a new folder, making new ones, and verifying.

I redid all my Titanium backups, verified all the files, and gave the ROM another shot. I set it not to synch anything during the setup process. I managed to get all of my apps set up successfully, including app data. Even the market works great.

At first the GPS wasn't working at all.. but I think I've resolved that. My contacts were a little bit off (couple duplicates and one pulled from an email), but other than that I've loaded up all the google apps, and they're all working fine, as is everything else so far.

reEDIT: heh nevermind.
