Questions about updating to ICS and resetting

Hi all,

I finally updated my Droid X to a Razr Maxx a couple weeks ago. I've been reading some of the posts here relating to ICS and wanted to get some feedback on whether it was worth updating to. There have been some posts that talk about problems some have had but it seems that most are pretty happy with it. I just checked and the .211 update is available for me (currently on .181) but I've hit the "later" button to put off the update for 24 hours.

One thing in particular: Doing the factory reset if there are lag problems after the update -- I understand this doesn't affect the SD card but does this wipe out all the apps I've loaded into the phone meaning I'll have to reload them? Is there a good [free] utility that I can use for saving the apps/data and then reloading them easily after the update and reset? I just don't want to make a mistake that will leave me with a lag-free phone that has lost all the great apps I find so useful. Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I didn't happen across it in my initial search:rolleyes:. Just point me in the right direction if that's the case...

BTW, I got to keep my grandfathered unlimited data and pay the subsidized price for the Maxx, which were the kickers in my decision to upgrade - loving the LTE speeds when I'm in areas that have it. I've also noticed that the wifi seems to work MUCH better than my DX did, D/L speeds are about doubled <cool!>

Overall, I'm very glad I updated to the Maxx so far...

Yes, it'll wipe out your apps. Go into your Play Store and hit menu, my apps. This will show you your apps. Now if you swipe to the left it'll show you all the apps you've downloaded on Android/Google. So, after you've done the update and your apps are gone, just goto this list and start loading all the ones you want and don't load all the ones you don't want. Easy to do. :)

you can also install astro file manager, free from market, click on back up apps, then select which apps you want to back up or or all of them, then after FR, install astro again, click on back up apps, then again choose what apps you want to reinstall or all of them, then it will start installing, astro also now has cloud storage if you want to save any thing there as well. My inc was rooted and have not rooted max, so I really miss titanium pro with made everything so easy to monitor for backups/reinstalls, as well as freezing and uninstalling bloatware which this phone stilll has a fair amount of....

I did a factory reset and when the phone booted back up, all my apps started re-installing on their own. What did I do wrong? Should I have cleared the internal memory?
You didn't do anything wrong, you must've had the box checked that allows google to back-up your settings (mine was checked by default). It still cleared everything out, it's just pulling the data from their servers to repopulate your phone. It's all good.

That's completely normal - when you sign into your Google account on a new device or one that has been reset, it automatically downloads all of your apps.

Edit - Lol, 2nd ninja

Where is this selected? I've been looking through the various settings but have not come across it yet.

never mind. Found it under privacy.
