Nexus 7 Watering Hole

I don't know what that is. I'll just kick it until it wakes up -kick- you awake yet watering hole? No? -kick-

Wow, just looked. The N7 hole started just 7 days after the S3 one and this has only reached 500 posts whereas the S3 hole just hit 5000 this morning.

Quality vs quantity? Or just a general malaise and apathy about hanging around with other N7 users?

I appreciate that there's a different vibe here but it doesn't feel that welcoming either.

I dunno. I love Android. I love the possibilities that Android gives. And I especially love meeting and talking with other users who share the same passion that I do.

Yeah, we're frivolous down at the S3 hole, but it is a lounge thread after all. We talk some S3 stuff, rooting, apps but then we have fun doing it.

Just seems kinda stuffy in here is all.

Just my 2c is all.

Do not, I repeat, do not buy a Galaxy Tab. SLOOOOOW tablet regardless of what processor is in it. I sold my Tab 7 Plus (arguably as good if not better internals than the Tab 2) after months of frustration with it. Have never been happier with a product than the Nexus 7. Go buy a $5 USB OTG cable and a card reader and you have MUCH more functionality than you would with a built-in SD slot.

I was only kidding, wanted to stir things up, but glad you mentioned about the SD card and USB cable, did not think of that, I am going to check it over the weekend, she loves the Fire, but I told much more features and flexibility with the N7, one thing I wish it offered if she wanted was 3 or 4 G service. We will see what she thinks, she will use it mainly for reading books, so I said then I can use it for other stuff, so lets get one with the added features for the difference of price, actually if you calculate the Play store $25 credit it will be cheaper, and she has more options for books and not only the ones that can be viewed on the Fire. And did I also say JB :D , lol

Indeed. Full JB alone is worth the price difference, then you have the $25 play store credit and more functionality. It's a no-brainer comparing the N7 to the Fire.

I have 3G on my Xoom but have since disconnected the service since I can tether off my S3 whenever I'm out and about with it. Being on VZW it's not worth the $10 per month to have it permanently connected.

Besides, the moment you add data to a device you drastically increase the update time (more so with Big Red) because the carriers do like to fiddle with things.

Unless I had a bloody good reason to, I'd not bother with a data plan on a tablet now.

THe great thing about having a tablet that is capable, you can add it at any time, and removed it a few days later, and pay the prorated price of $0.33 per day... But yeah I mostly tether my N7 to my GNex when I need to use data away from home.

Funny you said that, I saw it for the first time last night, and told the wife look, now that see saw it on TV, she is more inclined to try it now. Amazing how that works, LOL. I may have seen it before but probably never made notice of it until I she said she wanted a Tablet. :D

Now that I just noticed that the Fire can be rooted with JB, if she does choose to stay with the Fire at least I can pimp it up, if she lets me.

Anyone see the new N7 commercial with the girl in the space helmet? So cute, love how Google is marketing this thing. :D

OK, picked it up, I am playing with it as I type. I am setting it up before she gets home, sweet. I download a clock widget, Fancy widget, any others you recommend. Also any other apps I should installed be she gets home that you all recommend. I will install the Kindle app so she can see she still can get their books if the GP store does not have the one she wants. Heck I hope she doesn't like it, I want this toy now, LOL :D

Sweet, Don!
Can't link because they don't have a specific site, but if you search for the KF vs N7 in the Prizefight tv on Cnet, you'll see the N7 just kills it. :) Show her that one too. ;)

Is this the one you were talking about, http://cnettv.cnet.com/google-nexus-7-vs-amazon-kindle-fire/9742-1_53-50128787.html

Also here is another one

How people can even compare the KF to the N7 is beyond me, and I almost consider doing so trolling. The KF is a glorified child's toy, while the N7 is a robust and powerful daily driver capable of handling whatever you throw at it.. The four or five people I know who own KF's drool all over my N7 every time they see me, saying things like "I can't believe I paid the same for THIS as you did for THAT" and "Damn! I wish I was still within my return period".. One guy even said "You should stop bringing that thing over here, it makes me feel inadequate"

Very true Jay. But, when the Fire came out, it was still a great device and folks drooled over it because of the price and that it was from Amazon.
Prices of tech always come down (and now, more so at a rapid pace), so you always need to keep it in mind.
How much did 8meg of RAM cost in the 90s? ;) Not a terribly fair comparison, but I'm sure you get the point. :)
Know what you mean though, I got my parents a Fire for last Christmas and I'm almost kicking myself now because I know the N7 is such a better device. Fortunately they're not as techie geeky as I am.

Unlocked and Rooted. Someone remind me...I just got the update notice for 4.1.1, doesn't that unroot and relock if you download?

It won't relock your bootloader. And if you use scary aliens android root toolkit from the play store, you can "save root" and even flash the stock recovery, then take the ota to 4.1.1. Afterwards, restore root and flash custom recovery if you need to. Best root tool ever.
