Help Swype Custom Dictionary

OP here.

/dev/null, I guess you missed it, but as Scudder pointed out, this is a non-issue now that the custom database can now be edited. Swype also doesn't automatically add words anymore so there's less of a need to edit the custom dictionary.

Please read next time before you call others stupid.

Hey Lex...it's me, Scudder, the stupid one who answered your question. Well I THINK I was trying to be nice and answer what you asked. Let's revisit your question...you WERE the OP, yes??:

Is there any way to view my swype custom directory and see all of the words that I've manually added?

Let's see...don't see any question about a database or filesystem. Just a one line question. And I THINK I answered it pretty clearly...I mean to the best of my ability...regarding the new beta that finally allows us to edit the custom dictionary.

Perhaps there is some GENIUS out there...someone who only put up 1 or 2 posts in the forum...who can speak to databases and filesystems. But, again, i tried to help and answered as best I could. Sorry for my stupidity there Lex in actually answering your question...;)

We need the location of the Swype database. We ALL know how to select text and press the Swype button. It tells us that................

We are interested in the location of the Swype database in the FILESYSTEM. Not instructions on how to delete single words manually. Obviously, that is far too easy to achieve.

We need the location of the Swype database in the FILESYSTEM so that we may COPY the database, AUDIT the database, and REPLACE the database with the edited one. To everyone who does not understand this...reread it and let it absorb into your thick skulls. Then post a reply. Don't reply about my harshness. My harshness is due to the stupidity of people not answering OP's original question and instead offer useless information that is considered redundant by the OP.

Hi...Scudder here (aka "stupid")...was wondering what you would call a person who has only posted TWICE in these forum and who calls someone stupid after ignoring or not reading an actual answer to the question which, by the way, the OP finds satisfactory??

Question asked and answered. You want to talk about databases and filesystems ask a question here with some humility or create your own thread. Knock yourself out...

Or do what stupid (me) did...strip out your installed Swype and install the beta so you can do exactly what the OP was looking to do. You GOTTA be as smart as stupid (me) who was able to do that install the beta so you shouldn't need any help...

My message wasn't directed to you, Scud. Obviously you didn't tell us to select text and press the swype button. I installed the beta after reading your comment. But just to let you know, my previous comment wasn't directed toward you. I can't believe that isn't obvious. I wanted the location of the stock swype database but I don't need that anymore.

Seriously, go look what you wrote and how you wrote it. You posted right after I gave a satisfactory answer to the OP. There is really no other way to interpret who you were referring to except to everyone who posted above you, including me.

And the point is NOT clarifying to whom you were directing the "stupid" comment...it is that you even said it at all. BTW, I was making a point being rather sarcastic answering you as "the stupid one." I guess I made my point...

And even if you did not direct the comment to me, I strongly suggest you choose better words and tone in the forum. Most people simply try to post and help, even if they might be a bit off-base, which is fine...just kindly redirect them or simply indicate that that was not answering the question being asked.

What we don't need is what you did. Not only were you calling people stupid, but you commented about what you think the OP needed and even the OP said it was unnecessarily moot after my response!!

I wanted the location of the stock swype database but I don't need that anymore.

Yeah, NO ONE NEEDED IT anymore after my post...yet you STILL wrote what you did! In this case, the only person who doesn't look too smart is you...your placement of post was right after I answered the OPs question and then you state what the OP needs and he responds and says it is not needed.

Notice that none of the "stupid" people who you referred made any more comments or suggestions after I pretty much answered the question?? Only you wrote something after. They were apparently able to read and realize that a satisfactory answer was posted. You...well, I don't know what your problem was...

There is a big, big difference between genuinely trying to help but not answering the question vs. calling anyone stupid PLUS not answering the question, ignoring an actual answer to the question and ass-uming something the OP wants which he indicates he no longer needs at all.

Seriously, just take it easy here....

I don't see "personal dictionary" under swype settings on my droid charge.. Not sure if you are talking about swype on a different phone or if I'm just missing it.. I could well be the "stupid" one, but would love a pointer if it's staring me in the face and I don't see it.. I assume I would have the "beta" version or newer since some of those posts were old. thank you.

Hi Maggieo!

I'll try to help you as best I can because, as you suspected, I do not have your phone. At the time of these older posts, I wasn't able to find much discussion but stumbled upon this thread...

But before we do anything, we cannot assume that you have the "beta" version. If your phone cam pre-installed with Swype, then unless you are rooted and were able to uninstall the "stock" version of Swype, then you are stuck with the Swype version you have and, very possibly, a version that does NOT have the custom dictionary you might be looking for.

So, first question is: did your phone come pre-installed with Swype??

If it did, then you might be stuck as I am NOT sure if Swype gets updated when pre-installed through over-the-air (OTA) updates or not :thinking: But then that would answer your question as to why you can't find the custom dictionary.

Next, I should be able to direct you where to find the version :D
I believe Swype to be "universal" so I should be able to direct you to see what version of Swype is currently installed in your phone but, forgive me, I'm not exactly sure of your menu titles.

If you go to your Home page, then click your Menu button and then go to Settings...scroll through your list of settings and find something that says either "Language and Keyboard" (that's what mine says) or Keyboard or something like that and choose it. Then, hopefully, find Swype/Swype settings...then Preferences once you are in there. Scroll to the bottom of the preferences and you should see an "About" section with the "Version" number.

Reply back here with the version number and we'll try to determine if you're on "stock" with the custom dictionary (or possibly a future OTA update) or if you're on the beta!

Hi Scudder - thanks for the prompt reply. I did actually use this thread to clear out my swpe stuff (presumably) - to at least start over. I haven't done much re the dictionary but there are a few words that just won't swype for me - like "that's" - I forget what I get - but I can't get that word to save my life! Also - I always get god instead of good - but now at least good is a choice! so - My phone is NOT (yet) rooted.. it's stock.. and swype definitely came on it and it's version, 2.72.77.29122.29429.2682.SCH_i510 (the last part being my phone model) Thanks - and no rush! Maggie

Hi again...

Well, since (1) you confirmed that your Swype was installed "stock" with your phone; (2) you said your not rooted; and (3) you've provided the version number of 2.72.xxxxxx then, unfortunately, I'm pretty certain that you're out of luck with regard to being able to directly edit the custom dictionary in the way I've mentioned in this thread...sorry :(

The Swype version on my phone is currently 3.26.92D.36178.10 and might actually be out of date as I haven't checked for a new beta version in a while. I don't recall exactly what version allowed the user to view the custom dictionary in the preferences and add/delete from that screen but it was somewhere around 3.24 or 3.25 what that started...way 'above" the current version you have!

So, if you ever get rooted you'll be able to remove the version of Swype that was preinstalled with your phone and be able to get back on the beta program for the latest and greatest! When you do, come back to the thread or drop me a note!! :D Good luck!

There's actually a new beta as of a few days ago.

They now use dragon dictation engine (they bought swype not too long ago) for voice to text. Some other changes as well.

Funny because as soon as I posted my latest reply above, I went to the Swype site and noticed the new beta release (I think on 12/21 or so). I downloaded and installed just to stay up to date.

FYI for anyone reading this thread...the latest update and, if I recall, the other updates do NOT preserve your data, specifically your user dictionary, because I had to uninstall the current version of Swype, run the installed to download the latest beta and install that for your keyboard. So be prepared to have to "re-learn" some personal words such as named, nicknames, email addresses...and curses!!:D

What I do is actually keep a text file of a whoooooole bunch of words that I know the user dictionary doesn't save. Then if you select ALL the text and his the "swype key" at the bottom left of the keyboard, Swype prompts you to "save all" of the highlighted words and then I'm back in business :D

Thanks Scudder.. It's not that big a deal to me.. I just have a few words that it doesn't like to do right!!! I bought an app on 99Cents day that is some other kind of swype but I haven't even tried it and I forget the name and I'm not with my phone right now.. anyway, I'm good on that.. I have a few other droid questions though... dumb little stuff - I hate to start forum threads for them.. I can do some searching.. but if you were ever interested in me just throwing a few questions at you - please pm me.. otherwise, no worries.. I will find the answers some day!! This has been the most time consuming phone I've ever had and I have had a lot of trouble and negatives with my Samsung Charge.. Finally got GB, but all it did was help the battery life slightly.. Anyway, thanks again - Maggie

TL;DR but if you still have this problem..

Open Settings > Applications > All Applications (or Running Applications) > Swype > Clear Data
Swype is a great keyboard, but I did not like the way it adds words that I tap into it's dictionary. Souluna's answer above is exactly what you need to do to clear these 'tapped in' words.

The other "User Dictionary" is also easy to get to, but the words you put in there, you do on purpose. They are not automatically added. Those are at Settings > Language & Keyboard Settings > User Dictionary

Just wanted to let everyone know while the "Clear Data" option indicated above will clear those unwanted tapped-in words it will clear EVERYTHING...including settings and preferences for Swype AND words you might want!! It is the same function as "clearing data" for any other app...you basically WIPE the slate CLEAN as if you had a fresh install...and you'll lose stuff you might want to keep.

I and others noted in another thread VARIOUS options to clear everything or somethings depending upon your needs and what version of Swype you have. And if you have one of the latest Swype betas or can install it on your phone, the dictionary is TOTALLY user-manageable...you can add and delete items to/from the dictionary at will even in bulk!. Look over to this post and others above:

Swype was updated months ago to not auto-add tapped words into the dictionary.

Hilarious for MANY reason...(1) just the concept of "drunken swyping" and (2) your drunken spelling in this post with your "spelt" and wiht":D:D!!

scudder: 'spelt' is the past participle of spell; Legato's only typo was 'wiht'. Just because you want to type in 'US English' doesn't mean everyone should. I've been trying to find a standard English dictionary for Swype for a year, because I'm tired of having to catch sloppy-looking US spellings whenever I use Swype. The fact that I can't download one, and the fact that I can't get a list of words in the custom dictionary, are two serious shortcomings of Swype.

P.S: You've never typed whilst drunk? Those green emoticons don't look very sober to me. ;)

Your probably write ...I just ASSumed...in lite of hour complaints about the random silliness of swyping and his particular mention of "drunken swyping"...that he was swyping and up popped an unwanted or very seldom used word "spelt." I actually red it as a type of "wheat" rather than the knot-sew-common tense of "spell"

And you asked if I ever typed whilst drunk?? Methinks you doth protest too much...but to answer your question, I have yet to swype sober!! :D:D

(PS...you like my purposeful homophones up their...I mean, there?? ;))

Soooo, has anyone find a way to delete words built in in Swype's dictionary? I'm talking about words like for example "Italy" which comes with the dictionary and was not added by the user. This is the problem with Spanish dictionaries and accents from different countries, we in Argentina don't pronounce or conjugate like other Latin American countries or like Spain, so every damn verb sounds like Latin American Spanish and not like our own accent.

Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All>Swype>Clear data...will reset the Swype dictionary. You'll just have to reteach it your way of typing. "Haha", for instance, won't be there anymore either.

outside of that you can try to do one at a time by typing the misspelled word, hitting the spacebar, highlighting the word, and hitting the swype button to see if it will offer you the option to delete the custom word.

I have found that second way is less reliable and that I don't have that many custom words that wont in a very short time be re-entered in everyday use in a day or two.
