Whilst I can't give a guide to speak of yet (check back soon!) I can say that the Nexus 4 has already been rooted as proved by this image.

We can see SuperSU having been installed, root is needed for this, Titanium Backup and Root Explorer in the background.

Could be fake, but we can only hope.

Hooray :) cant wait til this phone goes up for sale, bet it will be back-ordered lol

I don't think so. At least not in the UK, I've seen absolutely zero advertising here and I don't think it can be this advert because companies rarely use adverts from the US over here, Google's adverts are always UK specific except this one, but that has no audio.

I've never rooted before so I've got a question. I used to be able to use my Nexus 1 as a hot spot on my T-Mo plan. When my phone died the other day, I paid cash for a Galaxy Note II knowing full well I would return it in 30 days and pay the $50 re-stocking fee. Anyways, when I went to use it as a hot spot it said my plan did not support that. I called T-Mo and they said I had to pay extra now for something I had always had in the past.

My question is, if I root the Nexus 4 I'm going to get, can I install a 3rd party app in order to be able to use my phone as a hot spot?

I hope Google will stop T-Mo changing anything about the Nexus, but yes if you root you'll be able to make your phone be a hotspot with a custom ROM. They're quite easy to install, search for a guide somewhere.
You then won't need a third party app.

If you don't want to root, go SIM free from Google Play, swap your SIMs over (you'll need a micro SIM) and you'll be able to share your WiFi out the box. I'm fairly sure they can't detect this, look around on the internet

So is unlocking the bootloader not the same as rooting the phone? I read in another thread that there is no root method at the moment. Also, are there already custom ROM's for this device? I'm a total newbie when it comes to rooting but I'd like to learn.

No. Unlocking the bootloader lets you root the phone.

Root has been achieved so there must be a method. It's a Nexus device so will be really easy.

No, there aren't any custom ROMs yet. Don't worry, they'll be loads.

Actually you can root and have a locked boot loader. Root let's you run apps at su level. Ex. Over clocking/under clocking, TiBu, etc.
Unlocking the boot loader let's you flash custom recoveries and there for be able to flash custom ROMs, kernels, back ups, etc.

Yeah that's true. You can get rooting apps, but the device is unrooted every time you boot with them

We're talking about different things?

No, you stated multiple times that a permanent root required unlocked bootloaders. You also said that an unlocked bootloader let's you root. This is not true, and partially true. And yes most 'root' apps are Soft roots but there are plenty out there or have been in the past with permanent root potential. I've actually used some in the past.
