Best cases to prevent screen from cracking

The title is kind of a misnomer - I know what the BEST cases for preventing screen cracking are.

My issue is this: I'm scared to death of dropping this thing, but it's massive enough as it is. So I'm looking to find a balance between protecting the screen and minimizing bulk.

Do shells with raised bezels prevent a screen from cracking? (Let's assume that the phone would only be dropped on a flat surface, rather than the screen itself hitting some small protruding object on the floor, like a rock.) if so, can anyone recommend something not too expensive (preferably 25 or under)?

P.S.: To be clear, I'm worried about cracking, not scratching. I never put my phone in the same pocket/bag as keys, coins, etc...and anyway, most scratches aren't noticeable when the screen is actually on. It's dropping & cracking that I'm worried about.

I got a bumper case for the very same reason. I have a metal bumper. It does add some weight to the phone since it is metal, but doesn't add too much bulk. Be aware that the other way to crack the screen is when the phone drops on one of the corner. The force of impact transferred from the outside corner to the glass and crack it even if the glass never touched the ground. To prevent those, you will need to have bigger/thicker case that could absorb some of the impact. The shock will just go right thru any slim case.
