Help JB update is killing me

im not sure i am following what your problem is, cant you explain a little better?

normally after many OTA updates you need to factory data reset to make the OS run better.

say you have a blanket, it is covered with all kinds of stuff, food, clothes, use car parts etc. imagine if you get a new blanket and put it over top of that old blanket. you will still have bumps that need to be smoothed out, but imagine if you took everything off of it, it will lay flat once more. same concept different things. try a factory data reset and it may help clear up some issues, if not let us know.

- mass storage is only available if you're using a sd card.
- silent mode is still there. likely an app is faulty and not updated for JB.
- notification light still there. likely an app is faulty and not updated for JB.

and what "among other things" are you having an issue with? the only problems I have with JB are minor, and usually a preference more than a problem.

also, if all your apps are up to date and a restart of the phone doesn't fix the issues, you'll need to factory reset. luckily I didn't have to...

for a PROPER reset, go to settings> privacy> uncheck automatic restore and then uncheck back up my data (in that order!!!!)> factory reset. when you uncheck those items, GMail won't reload some background settings/data during initial setup. it's worked for other folks.

*i do have an sd card and need to be able to drag and drop, no clouds
*silent mode is not there, as pointed out by the moto tech on the phone with me, instead you have to toggle the volume button all the way down
*notif light only blinks if screen times out, if using phone, no light
*others: calendar wont sync properly, intermittent. other issues are preferencial

i didn't want to do a factory reset b/c of the trouble with setting everything up again. is it supp to reset and come back to life with all apps running properly, and personal settings (smart actions, etc.) still there?

thanks

I used the OTA JB upgrade and now wish I hadn't because I want to have my phone rooted. I searched for other threads that describe how to go back to ICS but was unable to find one. Can someone post a link to the instructions?

Thanks,

CobraRGuy

was told by several at both moto and verizon, no way to revert back to ics once updated to jb.

silent mode - hold power key, select either speaker w/ line for no alert or tilted phone for vibrate only. another user had this problem, and a factory reset fixed it.

notif light - doesn't blink when phone is "active". do you really need a light to remind you to look at the icons that show up at the top of the screen when you're obviously looking at the screen?!

calendar - what calendar? my gmail one syncs perfectly fine.

this is correct, unless you root and go through all that...

it sounds to me that you need to bite the bullet and go through the factory reset steps I previously posted. all the "issues" you have aren't problems with the update. I got the update and my phone works perfectly. luckily I didn't have to reset, but that doesn't mean you don't.

the big thing is drag and drop files (other than media files). i cant upload to clouds or backup on web svcs, so i have to be able to use my phone as a thumb drive...UMS, which is no longer avail on JB.

what is the best way to reset without having to completely setup the phone from scratch again (apps, sync settings, phone preferences)

um... that's kind of the point of a reset. if you're having a computer problem do you backup your hard drive, reformat the partition, and then restore all your data? sort of defeats the point of the reset.

gump happens. gmail should save your contacts and calendars, but I ALWAYS recommend verifying your info on gmail before you reset anything. you can also export your contacts to your internal storage or sd card.

As others may have already mentioned, if MTP is working properly, your sdcard will be recognized by your PC just like your internal storage is. No, it's not mass storage but you should still be able to drag and drop any type of file on your sdcard. You might get a message saying that the file type isn't compatible (or something like that), but you can still save it on your sdcard. Btw, this is also true for internal storage. You should be able to drag and drop ANY file type on your internal storage. So if you can't drag and drop, that's not a fault of MTP, it's an issue with either your phone, sdcard, PC, drivers, operating system or something else.

I also don't know why you're so hesitant in doing a factory data reset. Yes, it's a pain to have to set up your phone, download all your apps and redo all your preferences. But if you're using a wifi connection and don't have a gazillion apps, the whole process will likely only take two hours as the most. Besides, it already sounds like you've spent way more time than that trying to figure out your issues to no avail. At this point, that appears to be your only option.

i did not reset, trying to avoid the hassle.

It's your call.

I know where you're coming from. Many of us resisted Factory Data Resets on the Bionic all last year. When we went from Gingerbread to ICS almost everyone did a FDR and had ZERO problems. Whenever a problem was reported the first questions was "did you do a FDR" and the answer was always no. Then the person did it and the problem went away.

That will not be the same with Jelly Bean. There seem to be some nasty limitations in the current release(s).

When you do a FDR you will loose all apps that you installed and the data associated with them. This includes any customization you did. If you changed options in an app those changes will be gone.

You probably got most of your apps from Play Store (still a stupid name) and they will automatically download again. Apps you got elsewhere you will have to reinstall.

It seems like a hassle ... but ... it is also an opportunity to clean up the junk you just never got around to.

Do a backup before the FDR and don't use anything in only when absolutely necessary like restoring the data on some game you play).

... Thom

I know it prbly makes no sense but I try not to purposely introduce new variables when there are so many unknowns (JB)...symptomatic of having a chemistry degree. If I reset, I may increase the unknowns tenfold, however, if it works, well, you were right. Thing that I can't shake is my phone was working perfectly in every way until the JB update. How can such and update be forced when it makes such critical changes to the primary functions of the phone? I know the answer to that BTW, purely rhetorical questn. I have everything back to acceptable with exception of the UMS setting. i've tried everything short of the FDR with no luck in getting any files trnsfrd. I'm at the point that if this is nec, i'll just take the phone back to verizon and get another one, warranty replacement, or even another make. This sucks, I loved my phone and got to enjoy it for 1.85 months.

I appreciate all the input but looks like if level 3 tech support at moto cant fix this i'm going a diff direction.

So you'd rather not do an FDR but instead take back the phone and get another one, which essentially requires doing the same DLing of apps and setting up of preferences that an FDR would? Wow.

not another one (moto/rmhd) but another type of phone/os altogether. one that has open os structure.

BTW, kishin14 I will definitely do the fdr as a last resort before changing phones, i like the rmhd that much. but if it doesn't fix the prblm then i have no choice. the apps and other cool features are just not as important as having ums. i'll let you know how it goes.

What would that be? iPhone's don't support UMS and neither do Windows 8 phones, which also utilize MTP. And all android OSs JB and above will also drop UMS support. Your best bet is to get an old phone with ICS that still supports UMS (since not even all ICS phones do) and never update.

this i realize, and it is depressing. however, if it comes down to it i'll just have to go back to my bberry unless i find a phone that still supports ums...that is unless my firm compliance gets up to speed on cloud tech sooner rather than later. btw, i would NEVER buy a toy like an iphone, worst of them all...IMHO of course.
