I have not upgraded yet. Thoughts on JB?

I have avoided making the jump so far (mind you I'm a tech junkie who used to root my fascinate to get things early).

When I upgraded my Galaxy Nexus to JB, battery would last about 1/2 day on 3G and Wifi only. No BT, no GPS.

I know Directv app will not stream on JB, but I don't use it enough for that to be my reason to stay on ICS.

I guess I'm looking for thoughts on Battery life mainly on JB as well as anything else. I have read some of the posts and am noticing some issues after upgrade.

There does not really seem to be any glaring reason to upgrade. Performance is either pretty much the same or even a little worse. One person claimed better photos but that did not seem to the case with the majority. And while I have not seen anyone go back yet, there has been chatter. I even started a thread about that subject.

Knowing what I know now, I probably would not upgrade. It's not bad enough to make me want to factory wipe back to ICS as I'm hopeful there will be future releases that contain small fixes or improvements.

As for battery life, I have not noticed it being any worse. If anything it seems to be even a little better on my phone but not enough to be definitive.

I can't think of one single reason not to upgrade. This is my opinion, of course. And I've read about people having issues with no mass storage, no more HDMI settings, the absence of the sleep mode option, and the loss of audio effects option under sound settings.

But I never used the mass storage option since MTP still allowed me to copy any files I wanted without issue. HDMI still works fine for me even without the settings, and I never used sleep mode (except via smart actions, which are still available). Also, audio effects are still present, but you just have to implement them through the apps themselves, such as the music app.

The benefits for me are many:

--A much better notification pulldown with expanded gmail messages, which I really like.

--Google Now and better overall voice search. I'm simply amazed at how well it does voice recognition and how quickly it responds. I use this everyday.

--Battery life also seems slightly improved.

--And the camera, while not particularly better at taking photos, takes them faster. So if you're like me and need to take a few shots to get a good one, at least you can do so in less time.

On a personal note, I also like how the status and navigation bar remain transparent when using live wallpaper or a third-party launcher. That was not the case with ICS.

Knowing what I know now, I WOULD NOT. Lost USB tethering, Bluetooth tethering, and WiFi hotspot. Google Voice Search is better than it was, but nothing great. Cant even look up a contact and provide directions for said contact.

Camera is WORSE, picture quality was better with ICS.

Is it possible to go back to ICS on this phone?

Yes, it is possible to go back to ICS. You need to follow the instructions on this post:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970267

I've done this myself. I installed the initial JB leak then used this utility to revert back to stock ICS so I could accept the official JB OTA. It works. However, after you revert back to ICS you receive messages that an update (first for a small patch to ICS, then for the JB OTA) is available. There is a way to disable this but I don't know how since I wanted to go to JB.

This worked without incident. Thank You again as I have zero experience doing this.

I only selected option #1 so I am assuming the phone is not rooted.
To root, I assume you select the other options in the utility? And is there any advantage in doing so?

Safestrap and VooDoo have no idea what they do?

Once the phone is rooted will it stay rooted if an OTA JellyBean update is applied?

So you can not use your razr hd as mobile hotspot on verizon if it has jellybean?

You can if you have the mobile hotspot plan from Verizon, or if paid for the monthly surcharge for the feature.

What everyone is talking about is being able to use it as a hot spot w/o incurring the surcharge.

If you have *limited* data, such as on a share everything plan, you can use it without any surcharge or plan. Legally. Without installing anything. With Verizon knowing full well you're doing. And I think you can do wifi/usb/bluetooth, though I personally only do wifi.

If you are grandfathered in *unlimited* data, you cannot tether without either paying the extra $20/month for it, or using one of the various methods to get around verizon's subscription requirements (many of which, though not all, require root). I've gotten burned describing how to get free tethering on an unlimited plan on this forum before, so I'll leave that search to you guys.

I am experiencing a decent amount of lag running JB. It's hard for me to compare to ICS because I didn't have the phone that long before updating. It is frustrating though. I have done a factory reset, but still get the lag. If I clear the cache, it seems smoother for awhile, but the lag creeps back.

Have you disabled the bloatware? I'd say that might free up some RAM and speed it up a bit.

JB is a big joke. Most people are romanced into thinking its a big improvement because of a few minor "so called" changes present. No real improvements however. Just a camouflaged effort by verizon/google to take more control over your phone. With JB, Nothing works. Cant tether for free, cant use any app permission killer or controller apps, cant use font changers, etc. And its the same wether you are rooted or not. Stick with ICS. I went back to ICS and "ain't" lookin back to JB.

So it's been about a month. What are people's thoughts?

I'm still on ICS, but the daily notifications to install update are annoying. I see people having issues transferring files when plugged to computer because it's not showing as a drive. What else?

If you're rooted go to your cache file and delete the install Zip for JB. No more notices. Have to be rooted to acces your cache file. Motorola/verizon/google don't want you to have access to your cache file on your own phone.

What bloatware would you recommend disabling?

There is or was a list somewhere in the RAZR section of the forum...its a long list.

DO NOT MESS WITH THE "DEVICE SETUP" APP....Don't clear the data, don't clear the cache....just don't mess with it.

Stuff like Vz navigator, kindle, MOG...that sort of stuff can be disabled...Facebook too.

If you are rooted, go into Titanium Backup and freeze "updater" and "upgrader" no more notifications and it won't download the update again if you delete it.

The apps that I disable keep coming back to life! the verizon stuff and smartactions, backup asst, sync svcs, amazon, etc...they all resurrect themselves after i disable them. i don't use backup asst, any way to permanently get rid of it?
