What is possible with a bluetooth headset?

I've been looking to get a bluetooth headset for my GN2, primarily for using when I'm on my bike.

Ideally I'd like to be able to do the following without touching the phone:

  • Listen to music/podcasts
  • pause, advance the track, and change the volume
  • answer a call (have music automatically pause if I'm listening to something else)
  • Launch and use a voice commands to do things like initiate a call, or make an entry on the calendar, or possibly send a quick email
I've never used a bluetooth headset, so I'm not sure how much of this is possible, but would appreciate some feedback from the experts.

Well i got a Samsung Stereo headset HS3000 clip on, after long time reading and research.
Though its old, but after reading reviews and posts on Amazon and other sites i picked one.
It do all what you looking for except
Launch and use a voice commands to do things like initiate a call, or make an entry on the calendar, or possibly send a quick email
Otherwise battery life is very good
It pair with 2 devices at the same time
No need for any adaptor it use normal 3.5 port
Stereo
Come with samsung eaephone, and they are quite nice, though you can connect your favorite earphones
Cheap compared to other
Sound quality is fantastic
And its even better than its newer versions , though the samsung HM6450 it does your last request with some sort of app u should down, but reviews saying its not really working well, pluse the front cover can come off easily
Cheers

I bike too. The perfect headset for all that you want to do, is the LG HBS-700. There is a newer model, the HBS-730, but it is extremely limited on distance from the phone and drops calls. The HBS-700 doesn't do that.

I told a friend about this headset. Gave one to him for Christmas. He drives a cement truck (Super Loud). This is the only set that the drivers at his plant say works. A bunch of them bought them and confirmed. Noise cancelling-plus.

This is a wireless bluetooth dual ear bud design.

Thanks for the suggestions from both of you. I've looked at the LG headset before and have been tempted based on the really good reviews it has, but I had two concerns. 1) When riding on the bike, I'd want to only have one ear in for safety, would I be able to have the other ear bud tucked somewhere, or would it just have to dangle? 2) I generally haven't been a big fan of the ear bud style that goes all the way into your ear (I have a pair of Sony wired buds that just kind of sit in the ear. It's been a long time since I've tried the insert in your ear style, so maybe they are better now, or at least I'd be able to get used to them without wanting to rip them out after 5 minutes.

The Samsung looks interesting to, although I'm not sure I fully understand how it works. Is it a receiver that you then plug in whatever wired earbuds/headphones you want? That seems like a cool idea, although I'd guess that I'd need to then buy a wired set that would come with a microphone?

I think samsung is good for you, and you dont need a wired set with a microphone as it has a microphone on the clip, and you can use the one came with it or your favorite earphones, and the good news its so light and you can clip it anywhere, though if you will use the mic then you should keep it near your mouth/

Sound quality is amazing and it got a built in equalizer of 4 moods i guess

If you're talking about a bicycle (vs. motorcycle), I'm currently testing a few models myself, for the same. Best thing to do is read the reviews on say, amazon.com, to see if others have the same issues/concerns. Then there is always just "buy the models which interest you, keep the receipt, then take them back if they don't meet your needs".

Many models perform the tasks you listed however if you'll be "biking", you'll need to be concerned about the device being "waterproof", and capable of staying in/on your ear. FWIW, I've recently/currently testing out the Motorola s11, Jaybird Freedom Sprint, Bose BT2, for listening to music at the gym, and phone use while "biking" on the road. All have their strengths/weaknesses, with the Bose and Jaybird being the only choise for "single ear" use (plan on mounting jaybird on helmet such that one bud is close to the ear for listening, while the other has more slack, and can "drop down" for use by hand to manage buttons, and hold mic closer to mouth, as the mic is not very good). I'm partial to the Bose/Jaybird in-ear mounting system, however both lack the audible caller ID (as far as I can tell), and overall sound quality, of the s11. But the s11 is dual ear, and the back of the unit sticks out too much, and gets in the way if trying to bench, or in the drops while riding. One side can be left off ear, to hear traffic, but its uncomfortable "for me"....YMMV.

Personally, I think the Jaybirds offer the most flexibility/safety, in regards to mounting, and not falling on the ground, or into your chain. But again, while making some test calls, whole sentences where being dropped, with both buds in ear...YMMV. To be fair, I was speaking softly, but not much softer than if I was in public and trying not to have everyone hearing my conversation.

I previously had the original version of the Bose, which have great noise cancelling, but lacked music streaming. If I ride this weekend, I'll wear the Bose to see if it falls out, and report back if you're interested.

Ideally, I'd take the s11 for features/performance. It would be perfect if not so bulky, or were made like the Jaybird. However the buds do telescope, so you could simply not have one "in-ear", if you find a comfortable position.

Yes, with the LG HBS-700 you can use it with either, or both ear buds. The bud you aren't using can be easily tucked under your shirt, or connected to the magnetic holder at the end of the neck piece.

These earbuds are the best I've encountered as far as comfort and staying in the ear. They come with a small and large set of buds that are comfortable and block outside noise very good.

The LG HBS-700 has a long battery standby and ~10 hours of talk time. That's fairly long usage time between charging.

They hang around your neck and most of the time you don't even know you are wearing them. There is virtually no hanging weight to pull the earbud out of your ears. I've never had mine fall out off my head or get lost, though I've searched the house top to bottom trying to find them and notice later they are still on my neck. Hey, you don't know me so why not tell it all!

There are no wires running from your ears to your phone.

I tried the Motorola SD-10's and they were perfect in every way except sounds (wind, no - light breeze) prevented phone conversations altogether.

I don't think the HBS-700 is water proof, but it fits fine tucked under a rain coat hood or hooded ski/bike mask.
