Uses for Raspberry Pi

I just got a Model B Raspberry Pi...my team leader at work sold it to me.

I'm curious...does anyone else have one and what have you been using it for?

The potential is almost limitless...anything from a Quake box to a hand-held ballistic computer. I'm just curious how others are using theirs. I'm going to try to hook mine up this weekend with a keyboard and mouse and see if I can play with Linux on my TV...

Oh, I LOVE raspberry pie! But...what have I been using it for? :thinking:

Generally, I just dive right in and enjoy!

Still not found a use. I wanted to replace my media pc but it was too underpowered.

I wish I could graft my htc desire CPU on to it...

I've lent it to a friend to see if it can control his home security system.

I've been debating getting one of those but...I'm not sure what I'd use it for.

I don't think it would do well in editing/processing RAW images...Nor would it be a great media center.

I mean. Right now, it might just be one of those "lol look what i has" things...

I was one of the luck first and had great plans for mine but laziness took over - it's just being used as an excellent video/media player at the moment with XBMC.

Now that I've discovered eye-fi cards I will crack on with the original plan of using it for timelapse - using the Pi and a hard drive to empty the camera card regularly so I can leave a camera in place for months.

I found the opposite. I bought my pi to replace my xbmc desktop. It was awful, even with the basic confluence theme. Mkv that was h.264 played ok eventually but other encodings in 1080 were terrible. Even navigation was a massive laggy experience. The UI was using 70-90% CPU even during media playback. I even overclocked everything. Just did not work out for me.

I was using the OpenELEC version

out of curiosity, when was this? Improvements are being made continuously. I do not know much about openELEC specifically, but if, for example, your experience was from the first shipping things might have changed drastically.

About 5 months ago. There were already videos of the Pi decoding h.264 videos using XBMC at that time, however that was not my experience.

No idea what version I was using - just wrote the image to a 2gb SD card, I use it to watch stuff I've grabbed using Get_iplayer downstairs on a big screen - they're 1280x720 and I've never known any trouble playing them.

I still haven't sorted out part B of that idea which is to dispense with the mouse and control via an android device on Wifi - preferably with direct connection.
