Nexus 4 vs iPhone

Hello
Basically I have watched pretty much every video available on youtube for both phones and still can't decide between iPhone 5 16GB or Nexus 4 16GB. Obviously Nexus 4 is cheaper on Google Play store but the thing is that they cost me exact same amount so it comes down to other factors such as screen size, quality, iOS vs jelly bean, etc.
LTE doesn't metter for me since where I live we don't have 4g. I love every bit of Nexus especially new Jelly Bean 4.2.2, Photo Sphere, Google Now and the larger display. On other hand, iPhone has better build quality, better camera, battery life, apps are optimised and overall better quality then those on Android. I kind of don't like that everyone has iPhone while Nexus is something new and unseen. I do have 2012 rMBP as my primary computer so I need my phone to be able to sync with my pc but I guess there is not a big of a difference.

My question to you is which one would you chose and most importantly why?

I find it interesting that you have this perception. I'd be inclined to agree only with the camera being better on the iPhone, and that has as much to do with the photographer ... but that's not what you asked. ;)

What was it about the N4 that made me choose it over all the other phones out there? In no specific order, the fact that it's a Nexus phone and will be updated sooner and have a longer update cycle. The price without a contract. Ease of rooting. The beautiful display. Customization available on Android takes and iOS device out of the running for me.

I based those perceptions on my own and reviewers' experience and I do believe they are true. I wouldn't look at any other android phone except Nexus and price, as I said before, is the same for both handsets. Reasons why I would take Nexus 4 is because of larger screen for games, Photo Sphere, Google Now ( I know it's on iphone as well but it is not as good). I can't decide or those reasons are good enough to take Nexus over iPhone.

That was a pretty good video comparing both phones. As he said, it really depends on the user which phone may be best for him or her. Me personally, my mind is already made up, I'll be looking into buying the Nexus around December, hopefully. I'll rather be tied into Google then Apple. I do currently own a Mini Mac so I'm not too bias towards Andrdoid.

Nothings there lol i dunno if its that one or not. Its just nexus 4 vs iphone 5 by lockergnome. Basically what he is saying is both devices are great it just depends what you want out of your device. If you take alot of pictures and videos its easily the iphone 5. Ive also used both devices and the iphone 5 has by far the better camera. If you watch alot of movies and videos the nexus 4 may be for you. The larger screen is nice for watching videos. If your a hardcore gamer honestly the iphone 5 is the better device. This really is an ios vs android issue. Android does still suffer from inconsistant frame rates and can drop frames still. This has been an android issue from day one. Its why the lesser powered iphone 4 with only 512 mb of ram and a single core processor can at times appear "faster" and smoother than some newer android devices even though the android device has quadruple the power. Project butter has helped and obviously google knows its an issue or there would be no project butter but android still isnt on par with ios on frame rates. If you like customizing your phone hands down nexus 4. No contest. Ios is still the same boring ios from day one. Now some people like it some hate it. Thats a personal choice. So it really depends on what you want and expect from your phone. Also keep in mind your comparing a 700 dollar device to a 300 dollar device. So that should also be taken into consideration. If you only got 300 bucks you cant beat the nexus 4. If you got more or are on a contract the iphone 5 is hard to beat to. Really depends what your looking for and what you will do with your phone.

I think it depends! if you're a little geeky... like have some windows background then Nexus 4 is definitely way to go.Because i find it very flexible in terms of operating but it does require a bit you computing skills. iPhone 5 is polished to perfection and simplicity but lacks flexibility. It's like socialism the party knows better what's best for you!

you couldnt pay me to use ios as my daily.

I feel the same. I had an iPhone 3, 3S, 4 and then switched to Galaxy Nexus and now Nexus 4. I can't list all the reasons why I prefer Android and the Nexus I'd be here all day, let's just say screen size and flexibility of the OS.

There's no way in it's present incarnation I'd ever go back to iOS, on my list of desired phones the iPhone wouldn't even come in the top 10, perhaps even the top 20.

It astounds me why anyone would still buy the iPhone since the introduction of ICS, I guess there are a lot of ignorant people out there or a lot of people who have invested in the eco-system and feel the switch would be too costly. That said, the iPhone does have a slightly better camera.

Can I ask you to elaborate why the iPhone would cost you the same as a Nexus 4. It's probably down to some carrier tie in, but I'm sure if you're canny you could get a much better deal on the Nexus 4.

Yep, I expect his carrier has said you can upgrade to a Nexus 4 or an iPhone and there will be no additional cost, we'll just extend your contract by 24 months, something along those lines.

However, as you say, the Nexus 4 should be much cheaper than the iPhone, so if you do some shopping around it should be possible to hunt down a good deal. The carriers rely on ignorance and laziness to over charge you.

Can you please list main reasons why? I could imagine that after using Nexus it is hard to go back to 3,5''screen but what are other reasons?

Sorry I never came back to you yesterday... got sidetracked!

Don't really have a list of reasons... as the iPhone is my work phone, I only use it for work stuff.

I don't really like the screen - as you said, it is so small in comparison to the Nexus. I don't really like the feel of the iPhone... don't get me wrong - it certainly feels solid but I just don't like it. I also prefer Android to iOS... this could just be because I'm used to Android. Think that the customization possibilities in Android make it better than iOS anyway :)

I had a short Android break when the iPhone 3g came out. I was previously with T-Mobile who had the original G1 in the UK. I left the iPhone for the HTC Hero (UK with chin) when that came out.

In my opinion (and I still own an iPod Touch) iOS is plain boring and sometimes counter-intuitive. I get bored easily and it didn't take me long to realise how little I could customize the iPhone. There wasn't even folders back then so it really was a sea of icons. Android with its widgets, seperate app drawer, live wall papers, different launchers and the rooting scene (I rooted and modded my original Nexus 1 quite a lot) just gave me something to do.

There are also some aspects of the OS which I would actually argue are less intuitive on iOS than Android - such as settings. Having to constantly exit an app, enter the settings app and then find the EQ settings (for instance on my iPod) is a pain in the arse. On Android I have quick settings in the notification bar and a widget on one of my home screens.

Lastly, choice. You want different hardware? You choose which Android device you like. You don't like Sense, Touchwiz, Blur..? Root and go with CM or PA or...

The only reasons I have an iPod Touch are that I've not got around to getting the DRM off on MY BOUGHT MUSIC FROM ITUNES (you still need to do this for Android right???) and the iPod sits in the car connected to the iDrive or whatever BMW call it.

I have both a, iPhone 5 and a Nexus 4. I can't stand the size of the iPhone. It is way too long/tall and not wide enough. Their idea to make a larger screen was a good one but they didn't execute it properly. The iOS is not customizable and some very important features are missing (unless you jailbreak). The only way I will use an iOS device (I have several) is if I can jailbreak it and customize it to my liking.

The build quality doesn't seem to be better to me. I've dropped both several times and only the iPhone has visible marks. As far as apps go, it depends on the app. Many of them are better on Android than iOS but a few of the iOS apps I like aren't available on Android. I have only found one app that is better on iOS but it was a one-off app for a specific conference. I get better battery life on my Nexus 4 than I do the iPhone.

In my opinion, the only reason to get an iPhone over a Nexus is for Siri and/or a physical mute/vibrate switch. If it wasn't for the horrible shape/size of the iPhone 5 I would have never gone to Android.

I don't know why people rave about the iPhone. Yes its made by Apple and yes it looks the part but owning a iPad 2 and a iPod touch I fear thats enough for me. The biggest gripe I have the Apple is customizing the interface and moving stuff around say music from pc to iPod and iPod to pc...its a nightmare! And i know its the same on the iPhone. Give me a Nexus 4 anyday if you want the freedom to customize everything possible and just drag n drop files to your N4 or vice versa.

For me an iPhone is just so limited its frustrating. Also I absolutely love the new stock keyboard and keyboards are big in my book as I do alot of texting. I also need fast multi tasking. Look up videos on GloveBox app and SwipePad. They are some of the most useful apps I've ever come across. Those are my main points. Also the screen is just amazing

@ the OP...

I've owned em both...As a matter in fact I've owned all the nexus devices and all the iphones since both were launched years ago.

And have to say that both the n4 and i5 are the best of each iteration.

I'm a rare bird in here as I don't really have a dislike for Apple, as I use a lot of they're stuff ranging from imac's, mac books, ipads, and yes...the iphone. Anyone who says they don't make good products is kidding themselves and needs to face reality.

However with that said, I'd still pick the nexus 4 over the iphone 5. The n4 is pretty much the smoothest phone on earth. It's lightning quick, and just feels right with all that vanilla goodness. Put some LTE on the nexus and oh boy would that seal the deal for a lot of folks.

The camera wars are getting old. The iphone 5 takes great pics, but guess what? So does the nexus 4! I'm a firm believer that the photographer is equally as important as the machine taking the pics. I've managed to take some awesome pics with my n4 that most would have thought were taken with an iphone 5.

IMO, I'd take an n4!

Could you post some of your pictures? Also are you using the stock camera app?

I would echo what most people have said here...

The iPhone 5 is a great device... but, both out of the box (no jailbreak/root) the iPhone is going to be the same as everyone else's iPhone. You can ONLY install what Apple says you can install.

The android, even without rooting you can customize almost everything. There are many launchers from Facebook Home, to Launcher 8 to Nova Launcher to Go Launcher etc. You can run a ap like Juice Defender which can almost double your battery life (YMMV). You can access the file system etc.

Yes, you can jailbreak the iPhone... and that may be your thing...

But, which is a "better" phone... I don't think there is a clear answer... although, I bet most people in this forum section would say N4 over iPhone5.
