Charging from a computer question.

To save money right now, I'm tethering with my RAZR, for internet. It is working great, except for one issue.

Whenever it is on the 4G LTE network (which is what I prefer), the phone slowly starts to die throughout the day.

I was wondering if there was a way to charge my phone as fast as it charges when it is plugged into a wall? I know a USB 1.0 and 2.0 port on a computer provides 500mA, and that a wall charger is 1000mA. I thought I had a great idea of buying a USB Y-cable (I can't provide a link since I'm new), thinking it would send twice as much power as a single USB port, but after I got it, and that didn't happen, I contacted tech support through the companies website, and they said that the phone is telling the computer to only allow 500mA, so it is splitting that between the two ports. Is there a way to trick my phone into thinking it is plugged into a wall while still allowing data transfer?

Thanks for any help.

no idea on how to trick the phone the way you want it to....at least not that i have come across.

the only thing i can think of is getting a battery backup or extended battery. or just keep it plugged into a wall when tethering.

I have a RAZR, so a back up battery, or an extended battery isn't an option. (Verizon replaced my thunderbolt with a RAZR, and I bitched many of time about how it wasn't comparable since I always carried a back up battery on me, but they haven't moved an inch.)

I'm currently tethering using EasyTethering, and that has to be plugged directly into the computer. What good apps are there to tether wirelessly? I didn't even think about that before, as an option.

there are a few of them, but the one i have used from time to time is WiFi Tether but it is for rooted phones.

edit: and FoxFi (WiFi Tether w/o Root) might work for you though

I tried that app for hours last night, and at first I could connect, but it was saying local only, and then it couldn't find the connection, anymore (on any device) even after restarting. *sigh*

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't think so. Iirc the mains charging unit 'shorts' the data lines in the cable, which signals to the handset that it can draw the full 1A rather than the USB-standard 500mA. You could modify a USB cable to do the same, but (a) it then wouldn't work for tethering and (b) might well damage the USB port by exceeding its rated amperage.

Wireless tethering, via wifi or BT, is your safest bet.

Alright, that's pretty much what I figured, unfortunately.

Any suggestions for WiFi tethering apps for unrooted phones with Verizon (besides FoxFi)?
