Replacing the screen yourself can by highly pricey and risky. The price of the screen and digitizer can run up to $200. If your phone is still in warranty (usually lasts a year after purchase) try calling Virgin Mobile to get a replacement.
If all else fails, it would probably be cheaper for you to buy a donor phone of the same model, (the Sprint variant would be cheapest) and just take parts from it as the original fails.
I'm sorry for your loss and wish you the best of luck.
VM is pretty good about replacing phones. The vendor you bought it from may have a replacement policy also, especially if you bought the protection/replacement plan. Some phone manufacturers; in this case Samsung, will warranty their phones for a period of time, and may offer a replacement or repair.
Even so, I've heard of people getting their phones replaced with cracked screens by Vm without much fuss. If you don't want to pay for a repair or replacement phone, it's worth a shot.
At the very least they will offer you a reconditioned phone at a much lower price. When I lost mine they offered me a reconditioned phone for $178. Probably around what you would spend for a new screen. Luckily my phone was recovered.
