Root [ROM][ICS] Paranoid Android Ver1.6 Beta from source (31JUL2013)

I joined this forum to thank you for this great custom ROM, so thank you.

Before discovering this thread, I had been using MTDev's late April tester. After figuring out that this ROM was only one being actively developed, I switched a few days ago.

I don't know how past PA Roms have performed, but there is significant sluggishness in Trebuchet and the app-drawer compared to MTDev's last rom from April. Apps themselves perform fine.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

For what it's worth, I did a clean install of the 7/20 PA ROM...a factory reset, wiping cache and Dalvik cache...before installing this rom. I am using the traditional CM9 phone UI, using the Zip file that you provided. I am also using the graphics drivers that you provided the day after you posted the 7/20 tester.

I was initially excited about the smaller hybrid DPI, but my Triumph's touchscreen just isn't sensitive enough to make good use of it.

I haven't seen a lot of feedback for the 7/20 tester, so I wanted to give my two cents. Thanks again for providing a great and stable ICS rom for my Triumph. I would have liked to replace it a while ago, but still can't afford it, and you've given the phone new life.

I have reloaded the latest PA tester and it has been working like a charm, I dig it too much to not enjoy having it on my phone. One thing I have noticed is random headphone disconnections or it might be the music app I am now using (WinAmp Pro). I will try another one and see if I get better results. I would use the stock music player which is sweet but I cannot get into the white theme of it. I would like to see that app go black.

Other than that everything seems to work just fine. The heptic feedback tends to hiccup and go off base (meaning if you hit a single letter it adds three random letters) when you are typing too fast which makes texting a chore but if I slow down it seems to work fine.

Kudos though! PA is functioning significantly better than the first release I loaded. :D

As far as the performance of the July rom goes I was experiencing lower performance until I flashed BSydz-PA-ICS-ZuesEGL.zip. After flashing this file my performance was much, much better and smoother. Don't know if it was something that got fixed by going into recovery or it was the zip itself, but the performance now is better than the June tester.

I just installed the July tester and updates to my wife's Triumph and she is having an issue. She uses Facebook and Instagram, I don't use either of those apps and never have, but she informs me that her phone will restart itself when running those apps. I don't know if its the apps or the OS, but she had the same issues with CM7. Just thought I would get some opinions on it as I try my best to keep her happy.

I've been running the July tester for a couple days now and have been having the same issue with Facebook. I don't use Instagram so I don't have any comments on that.

I'm VERY pleased to say that I've not had any of the roaming issues that I experienced on the earlier builds. However, I do notice severe lag when closing apps, switching screens, etc. - just about everything. I don't do any "gaming" but I'm going to make a backup and install the ZuesEGL zip to see if that helps in any way, since cowboy44mag seemed to have good luck with it.

EDIT: I just now saw BSydz's edit on the July 20 post. Wish I had noticed that sooner, it might have saved me some headaches from all the sluggishness LOL I'll report back here as to whether the ZuesEGL zip cures my lag issues.

ICS does use a lot of RAM. JB does even more. It's the price we pay for having an OS that is squeezed on to a phone.

Whoa, well it does make sense. Also I did the whole thing again with out flashing BSydz-PA-ICS-ZuesEGL.zip and I gotta say that it gives way better performance. Way better then June 25 rom. Awesome job, it also seemed to fix the freezing problem I had with the JUN 25 rom!:D

After some more usage there seems to be an issue with games closing, I am trying to figure out what is causing it. I'll post as soon as I figure it out.

EDIT: I think I found it, it was the EGL/GPU libs, I had been using the EGL libs from the Xperia Play (Zues) and they were not used in the older version that I am working with now. I changed the kernel and system but haven't got to the libs yet. This should fix a lot of stuff.

BSydz-PA-ICS-ZuesEGL.zip

EDIT 2:
Forgot some files for the EGL/GPU

BSydz-PA-ICS-ZuesEGL-2.zip
Thanks for the feedback everybody.

I found some more files needed for the EGL/GPU that should help smooth things out more. I edited my first two posts and quoted one so it would be easier to find. This still doesn't fix the games closing or probably the fb app rebooting, I don't use it so I don't know. I'm working on the drivers now so we'll see what happens. I just wanted to get this out there for those using the July build.

I've been using it for a couple of days, and seem to do some different things than other people. No games, haven't taken pictures, no facebook, but primarily used for data and gps. The gps takes about 12 minutes to get a good lock on location, but then works very well. I did have a little sluggishness with the UI, not recognizing taps, etc., but it all cleared up after a reboot. I have had one random reboot where it indicated it was roaming and had no data signal, but again, a reboot cleared it up. Overall, everything seems to be working well, and the GPS is more solid than any build I've tried since Froyo.

One minor issue that I've noted: I think that having the notification indicator show the number of notifications doesn't seem to work. When I have one email, the notification shows up in the bar, but if I receive multiple emails, the notification stops showing up. The notification stays on the bar when I turn off the number indicator.

I use GPS a lot, mostly with Google Navigation. Even when I was running stock OS with the Triumph it had issues getting a GPS "lock", but would usually be okay once it finally did lock. I have found that no matter what OS you use with the Triumph you will get a much quicker GPS lock if you first launch GPS Test (on Google Play Store for free), wait for multiple satellites to be In Use, hit home key, then launch whatever app you need to get a GPS lock. Doing this method with Google Navigation I went from waiting for GPS lock from anywhere from 5-15 minutes to having a GPS lock within a minute. The GPS Test app itself doesn't seem to hit the battery very hard either.

Thanks to those that tested the last tester, and provided feedback. I have not gotten the jumbled text at all since running it, but I have had the occasional sleep of death and soft reboots. I have also noticed, with this latest tester and also the May 6th release that The Simpsons Tapped Out will close and the wifi will be gray instead of blue, when it closes, this may be the cause of other games that require network connection to close. I have no idea what it is, my hunches are our wifi setup, and the new Play services introduced last month, as the problem started just after the Google IO conference, and the roll out of all the new features/scary data mining tools.

So, here is the deal. I yanked the kernel from the May 6th release and put it in a flashable zip. What I am trying to discern is what affects the kernel is bringing to the table and what is in the system that is causing issues.

If you are still using the June tester, I would like you to wipe the cache and install this kernel for a few days to see what changes. As always thank you for any feedback provided. It definitely helps.

BSydz_PA-kernel-06MAY2013-201202.zip
For those of you that are having reboots with the facebook app on the July tester I would appreciate it if you could flash the may kernel to see if that remedies the issue. Just trying to narrow things down. I know the May kernel was one of the best kernels so far, so if it helps I'll know where to look. Thanks again for the feedback.

I'm on the July tester.

I couldn't play Candy Crush Saga because of constant crashes until getting the latest ZuesEGL package. Now it seems to be working great. I've used Facebook briefly and didn't have any crashes or reboots.

I've been using the ROM for less than a day now, but it is working well for me so far. Thanks for your continued effort!

So far installing the BSydz-PA-ICS-ZuesEGL-2.zip seems to have corrected the problems my wife was having with Facebook and Instagram. As I don't use either of these apps I'll have to see if she has any more problems. If she experiences any more trouble I'll install the May kernel on her phone and see if the problem persists. Right now though I'm thinking that the BSydz-PA-ICS-ZuesEGL-2.zip fixed the problem:D

Ok. After running things for a few more hours, I have noticed the phone hard reboot twice in the middle of gaming. I will try the May kernel and see if that helps and report back.

I don't know if this is just me, but on the latest tester I'm having no luck connecting to GPS, I installed the May Kernel over it and it is still having trouble connecting, first time using GPS since I installed this build, so not sure if it is just me or something else.

Edit: it seems that was just an issue that day, today it connected in 90s so that's much quicker

OK, fixed the kernel and tried out some new auto brightness values based on all stock ROMs, I had it completely stock on the other July tester but customized it based on those. It was still too bright in the dark. It should respond very well in bright light, just takes a lil long to reduce the brightness. But it has never worked like this before, in a good way. Still some things not yet messed with because I got side tracked on the issues with the other tester. This is what I was expecting from the other tester.

If you're flashing testers then you should know the deal. This is seeming to be very stable and responsive at the moment. Let me know how it goes.

EDIT: no need for kernels or GPU drivers everything is included.

I have been running the July tester for a couple of weeks now and just started to notice specifically that Facebook does FC when trying to load personal messages and Gmail when trying to delete multiple emails at one time. I have had a couple random reboots and only one instance of no data connection which toggling airplane mode fixed. I am going to load the new testers and see from there....I mean for me everything else is legit and the GPS is spot on which is HUGE for me since I use Google My Tracks daily.

Note: I still have issues with the in-call screen flickering on and off throughout a conversation but maybe I have a weird shaped head since nobody else has noticed it :)

Nice info Velcer!

Bsydz, I can second the screen flashing on a phone call with my normal head ;-) . I guess that's a proximity sensor issue? I also got the jumbled text issue earlier today. Not sure if that's something that's still lingering. Either way, what a great rom!!! The only thing that bogs me down at 1.4Ghz is tablet ui :)

Hey guys, I hate to do it to you, but there were issues in the July 20th tester, and the July 24th tester should fix most of them. So as much as I like feedback I have to ask you guys to disregard the 20th build. I'll look at the proximity sensor, it is in the kernel. I also got the text jumble for a second today, I am wondering if it is EGL related, but these make everything so smooth it may be worth the trade off, but I may also be able to fix it on the kernel side. It's just so random it will be hard to pin down.

So moving on, just need feedback for the July 24th tester. Thank you for all of your kind words and feedback.

Also, on another note, I know dsmryder is busy and has worked on CM7 more than CM9. So, once I got this build put together I figured I would transfer all my updates to CM9. Even though PA is basically CM9 with a few GUI tweaks and can be set up just like Stock CM9, the code for CM will be more up to date as PA has moved on to JB, but I can just merge PA in to this new CM9 and get it up to date. I used the ICS branch as the release branch has not had changes made in a very long time, I don't think they are keeping it up to date any more. I'll have a talk with dsmryder about the future of CM9 soon, but wanted to share this to see if it is worth pursuing. This should be right on par with PA, same everything, unless I missed a line or two of code in the merge process. Let me know how it goes, If enough interest is shown, I'll create a new thread for the ROM.

Just installed the July 24 tester this morning. So far no issues to report. Seems very responsive, fast, and I love the automatic brightness tweaks!! Will continue to test.

Has anyone tried cm-9-20130725-UNOFFICIAL-triumph.zip yet? I'm very interested to see what the feedback from that rom will be. Which rom do you think will be the best running for the Triumph the PA (latest being July 24th tester) or the true CM9 rom with your breakthrough developments?

I've installed it and I got low performance...I don't really know why, since it is using the same files as PA JUL 24 and people are getting great performance on that. I think it might be the way I installed it or it could be just my phone :/ I'm not sure...

I hate to ask this, but is there anywhere else the file is hosted? I've tried clicking on the download link for the 7/24 tester about 8 times from four different browsers, both desktop and mobile, and never get a download. Nothing starts downloading, none of the links on the page are actual download links, only ads.

edit: I finally got a link to download on the 18th try over 6 hours...

I'll report back here as to whether the ZuesEGL zip cures my lag issues.

My apologies for not providing my feedback sooner. I see BSydz is asking to only post feedback on the July 24 tester, but for anyone who wants to try the July 20 instead... I still had major lag issues after installing the first version of the ZuesEGL, enough to make me revert back to my last CM7 backup until a new tester came out. If I get ambitious this weekend I will drop the July 24 tester in and see how it works out for me.

Been running the July 24th tester on my wife's phone and mine. Have a strange thing happening. When we use the camera to take a series of pictures (20 or more) the phone will behave normal until it falls to about 40% battery and then will say the battery is dead and turn off. If I try to restart it will boot and say 0% battery and turn off again. If I pull battery for a few min and restart it will boot with 40% battery. If it was only occurring with one phone I would say battery, but it is happening with both.
