Retail Cost "Excuse"

This speakerphone is probably the worst I have heard. It seems no matter who is on the other end of the phone call whether it be a cell or land line, speakerphone sucks. However, playing music through spotify is quite a bit better. Even still this is one of the quietest, if not the quietest speakers I have heard. I actually may agree with the "iVerge" review on that aspect. Us fans of Google / Android and the Nexus program have a hard time accepting criticism for the things we love. Hell anyone has a hard time accepting criticism for what you love or want to love.

When compared to the 5S; the Nexus 5 at full volume is equal to the 5S at half.

The speakerphone may be the sole reason for me returning the Nexus 5. I love the screen, the battery seems great especially for a first day charge, and the camera app will be updated. You cannot update or make a speaker quality better, unfortunately.

Give me an HTC One-2 with onscreen buttons and a 5 inch display, normal camera and get rid of the huge bezels.

Comparing the costs of the Nexus 5 vs the high end units should not count as an excuse we have to make as consumers. "Oh it only cost 350 or 399, I should expect to have a *****ty speakerphone, or possibly poor camera performance." The phones components may very well be similar in price to the HTC One or S4, Google just chooses to make much less profit because they don't need to make most of their revenue from selling cellular devices.

The iPhone 5S is $199 to make. Apple chooses to sell them for $649. If Apple can make a great phone for $199 then so should Google and LG be able to.

Even if the Nexus 5 cost $199 to make or perhaps $250, or $275 an extra $75 above the cost of the iPhone for a huge company such as LG should be plenty to spare to make THE HIGHEST quality phone out there.

The S4 cost $237 to build, for example and arguably has certain higher quality components such as the 13MP camera, and 2600mAh battery and an equivalent screen size of 5 inches. I could not find the HTC One cost to build.

If Google is really all about getting 4.4 and android into the next billion customers, they should make the highest quality phones and perhaps think about selling them at or near cost to build and make profit from the play store instead.

Unfortunately the only thing for me that is better specifically about the Nexus 5 over the iPhone is the screen (not comparing OS's). Man is it gorgeous. And when that's the only thing that is better, I am disappointed to say but it is going back. And no, the additional retail price of the iPhone is not a relevant argument as explained above as it is likely that they have a somewhat similar cost to build.

So you are literally saying that since the iphone is made for 200 and sells for a 450 dollar profit that google should build a more expensive phone and and sell it for nothing?

That makes zero sense, they literally just one of the top 5 phones of the year and sure it has a few draw backs, but it is literally almost half the price of every other phone out.

I agree though that if the speakerphone is a deal breaker to you then I would return it. It would be nice if the phone had a little bit bigger battery, little better screen, and a better speaker phone.

Honestly no one should even expect a phone this great to be this cheap let alone be more expensive to make. They are probably taking a loss already and making it all on software as is.

Initially I'm OK with the speaker. It's pretty soft but way less shrill then my GNex. My N7 is a bit better but not wonderful.

It comes down to use and preference. If I can go all day with 2 hours of screen on time and a decent speaker with these specs and price -- sign me up. I guess I'm not anywhere near a "power user" compared to some. All part of the beauty of Android...

Android is not for you, no matter what model, it's obvious. Get an iPhone then you won't have to be unhappy.

Would you like some cheese with your whine?

Seriously, life must be hard for you. I rarely ever use my speakerphone. Had a roommate who only used speakerphone and he annoyed the hell out of the rest of us.

And people who cite the $199 cost to build the iphone(or any phone for that matter) don't know shit about business. So if the direct manufacturing costs equal $199, what should the product sell for? $209? What about overhead? What about selling and administrative expenses? what about profit? Companies have a right to earn a profit. And just because an item has direct costs of $199 doesn't mean that the company doesn't have various other support costs they have to cover. THAT IS HOW BUSINESS WORKS.

Our society has become so damn entitled it's not funny. As a retailer myself, I've seen people return stuff for the DUMBEST and most selfish reasons. This is one of them IMO.

Lets not forget labor cost, R&D, marketing, and distribution. ;)

I just got my Nexus 5. My previous phone was the Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus 5 speaker is MUCH louder, so I'm happy.

Good enough for me. The Gnex is very quiet.

Yea I have noticed most whiners/complaints have been from those who have or coming from a comparable device. Those who are truly upgrading seem to have no complaints. ;)

i don't get the complaint on the pictures. Even the best smartphone cameras out there still take pictures that look like they came from a smartphone compared to a real camera in my personal opinion. The N5 camera is good enough for the times I want to snap something quick out and about. I like having a camera available all the time if I want something quick - the "better than nothing picture". If I know I am really wanting good pictures or planning on taking pictures, I will use my D5100 though. Smartphone cameras are a long, long, long way from a real camera no matter how you cut it.
