Tablet to go with my Note 3

So I've had my note 3 a few weeks now and I absolutely love it, but as expected its just not big enough to do everything I like. Still using my full sized I-pad around the house for browsing, movies games and such. I'm considering an Android tablet as my I-pad 2 is a bit long in the tooth. Any benefit in going with a Note 10.1 over other android offerings (in terms of compatibility with my note 3)?

I wouldn't consider anything other than the larger Note. These are the only tablets and phones that use the pen to any level of competence. The other tablets can only use a stylus which has a much broader tip and limited capabilities. You are already familiar with how to use the pen on your Note 3. Using it on the Note 10.1 will give you added training and experience with it. You would really get to be an expert by using it on both devices. And I think you would expect to use it on the tablet and be disappointed if you bought a tablet that didn't have a pen.

probably should have mentioned in my original post that I have taken the s-pen out of its holder maybe 4 times since I've had the note. once to see if it worked and then all the other times to show interested parties that it works. i'm not a big stylus user.

Well if you don't use the pen, then it really doesn't matter if you get the Note 10.1. I would suggest you get a Samsung product though, because Samsung adds a lot of interface tweaks that might be confusing to have on one device and not on the other if you buy a different brand.

I suggest you check out the App "S Pen Toolbox". It allows you to set up your own customized App menu to pop up when you take the pen out. I deactivated the Air Command auto start on pen pull and use the custom menu I get from the S Pen Toolbox. This way I get exactly the Apps I want. I can still activate the Air Command by pressing the button on the Pen. And I can activate my S Pen Toolbox menu from the Notification pull down if I have dismissed the S Pen App menu.

Definitely take a look @some 7-8" models before making the jump to the 10.1" series of tablets.

While the added real estate is cool, you may find yourself wishing you'd hung on to the i-Pad2 for ease of use. A 10.1" tablet is not a handful,it's two hands full.

Speaking from experience,my XYBOARD 10.1 is/was a sweet tablet, premium materials & build quality. However, the size & weight is what kept it from being a go-to device & I've been through two other tablets since then.

The GN8 was almost a keeper,but,for me,just a touch too wide for comfortable/secure one-handed use & I sold it a month later.

Samsung GALAXY Note 8.0

I'd go w/the GALAXY TAB/HISENSE SERO 7 PRO:

Hisense Sero 7 Pro
Samsung Galaxy Tab

or if you're willing to spend a little more, either the NEXUS or LG's new tablet.

I had a samsung 10.1 tab and sold it cos it was too much of a handful. Nexus 7 2013 is just the right size for me and quick. Not sure I'd spend the extra on samsung. Integration is poor between my latest sammy led and note 3. Not impressed. I use SONOS speakers so the n7 is a good controller to my nas. other than that its used for internet browsing only.

I have the Note 10.1 and highly recommend it. Some of the pros that it has are; amazing screen and resolution, micro sd slot, IR blaster, compatibility with Samsung TV's etc. If you are going to be watching movies on it I would say you will be very appreciative of the screen size and the micro sd slot. I would also highly recommend installing the Plex app and streaming movies to it.

Also, even though you don't use it much yet, the s-pen will still come in handy at times and developers are still finding new uses for it and you may find yourself using it more.

I also have a Nexus 7 and it just doesn't fit the bill the same way as the 10.1, even though it is a fabulous tablet.

It's really difficult to recommend something for someone elses needs, since that will always vary with each individual.

I personally purchased a Note 8.0 1 month after release, just because I'm completely sold on the S-Pen and the functionality behind using the S-pen. The only down side that I've found is, after upgrading to the Note 3, from the Note 2, S-Note has become a pain in the butt to SYNC, as compared. Samsung re-wrote the app completely, so SYNC doesn't work flawlessly like it once did. There are a few additional steps now, that didn't exist before.

That said, it's very possible that the SYNC management between the Note 10.1 (2014 edition) and the Note 3 will work well, since the newer Note 10.1 has the newer version of S-Note.

At this point, I've been extremely happy (overall) with my Note 8.0, but have run into the same issues that I was having with the Note 2 (not enough internal storage), so I'll likely be upgrading the Note 8.0 to the newer version (if they come out with a 2014 edition for that as well).

Eventually, I'd like Samsung to release a production model of their concept foldable smartphone. Once they do that, I'll no longer need a portable tablet.

That's a good question. Something I'm still trying to work out myself lol. With the Note 2, I had the Ipad mini and I still had it when I got the note 3. I sold it though a day or two before Apple announced the mini 2, as I wasn't using it anyway since getting the Note 3. Of course as soon as I sold it, I kept wanting something bigger. For me personally 10" is too big. I did have the old Note 10.1 tablet but didn't use it. In my quest to find the right tablet, I've tried an Ipad 2 (that big is deffo out of the question for me), Note 8 and a Nexus 7 2013.

I like the Note 8 but it doesn't get the best rep. Resolution and PPI isn't great but as long as you don't see it side by side to something else, eg the HD nexus 7 is alright. Apart from the colours. The Simpsons for example have an orangeness to them (same as old now 10.1 apparently but I have to admit to never noticing before lol. Again, it came from comparing).

The Nexus 7 I didn't think would be big enough of a difference in screen size, but actually it is, I'm using it now. It is quick, nippy and great display. There are times though I wish it were an 8" display. It depends if you want something the same size as your Ipad or a bit smaller and would you miss iOS? I love Android, couldn't live without it but, email is fantastic on iOS and as I check my email every 5 mins, it's something I miss lol.

Think what you need to decide first is what sort of screen size you want, then explore the options from there.
