nexus 7 newbe

New to the world of nexus 7..have several questions in it's use
1. Is a internet connection required to read books after downloads
2. Where are the books kept on the nexus or are they kept online somewhere
3. How do I store downloaded books on the mem card on my nexus 7. also to my samsung galaxy s4 smartphone
Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated

Welcome. Once you have downloaded a book you don't need an Internet connection to read it.
I use the Aldiko reader and have a folder named ebooks on my tablet's memory. Within the ebooks folder there are folders for authors and within them a folder for each book by that author. That book folder contains several files including the epub (or whatever) file.
There is also a folder named import within the ebook folder. When I download a new book to my laptop I copy the epub file into the tablet's import folder and then use the menu in Aldiko to import the book. My books come from the library and I use a program named Calibre (on my laptop) to remove the expiration code from the book. That gives me more time to read a book at my leisure. These same things were true of my Android phone that I used for ebooks before I got my N7.
I use the ASTRO File Manager on my N7 and can see the folder structure in tablet memory. There is a folder named SDCard (even though there is no separate SD card in the tablet - no place to put it) and the ebooks folder is in the SDCard folder.
I have a home network and my N7 can see the Windows PCs in my network and can copy files from one of them to the tablet memory. You could do the same thing by connecting your N7 to your PC with the USB cable.

Thanks very much for the info but I feel like when I made the big move from big iron(main frames) to windows pc's. As I said, I have downloaded several books that I have bought to my nexus 7 but I don't have a clue as to where they are stored, I assume in memory. Question now is how do I get them from memory on my nexus 7 to my pc or galaxy s4.

Can you tell us HOW you downloaded the books please. There is a downloads folder and they may be in there. My wife has bought some books from Amazon and downloaded them in Kindle format. I would have to look at her N7 to see where they are.
As to how you get them to your PC or S4, connect your N7 to your PC and you can copy them from the N7 to the PC and then to the S4 from the PC by connecting the S4 to the PC.

Sorry, bought the books on google via google play. I used es file explorer and your astro file manager and searched my n7 but did not find my books although they are available in my library. I am puzzled big time

Courtesy of the Google Play store I have "Treasure Island", "Alice in Wonderland", and a couple other free books. I'm using ES File Explorer and I can't find them in any file folder.

If I go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Books I see the App storage is 12.47 MB and Data storage is 25.53 MB. Do you suppose the books are stored inside the app?

All that stuff is stored is SD card/android/data/
All Google play movies are in there. I know this for a fact as copied them to external SD card on my samsung tab 3. Also there is a folder in there for magazines books etc. At least on my device there is.

FYI..what you say is undoubtly true, but on my N7 there is nothing in the locations that you state on your device. I don't see the software used to store books, magazines, putting them anyplace other then where they are designed to go. Placement would not be a user option.

On my N7 if I view all books in My Library I have three that are ""kept on the N7". I have searched for one of them using the N7 and using Windows Explorer with the N7 cabled to my laptop and can't find it. My internal storage contains a folder named Android which, in turn, contains a folder named data. Inside the data folder are a number of other folders such as com.google.android.xxx where xxx may be magazines or videos, etc. There is no folder named my library or books.

So, brosko, could you please reply with the exact folder structure you say contains the books.

You can download books via google play and you have the option to keep them on the specific device or to just have them on the web. I keep the books I'm currently reading on my device so when I'm offline I can still read them. If they are online you can read them as long as your signed onto google.

Yep, we got that. But the op wants to know how to copy the book from his N7 to his S4 and none of us can figure out how to find it so we can copy it.

My magazines folder contains 2 sub-folders - cache and files - and they are both empty.

If all the OP is looking to do is get the books to his S4, it should be possible to simply go to the Play store from his PC or his S4 and download them to the S4. I'm not aware of a PC app that will read Google Play books, so the only way I'm aware of is to go to the Play store on the PC and read the books on the web. This is why I tend to buy Kindle books instead of Google Play books, as I can read them offline on any device.

Uhmmm...not sure why you would want to copy the book(s)? Just sign-in to your Google account on your S4, go to Google Play Books on the S4 (install the app if you haven't already) and open the app. Any books you have purchased on Google Play should be there.

If you want the book(s) stored on your device, press the three dots within the book box and "pin it" to our device. You will then be able to read the book without an internet connection.

I regularly switch between my N7 and Galaxy Nexus for reading magazines and books....no problems. In fact, Google Play Books even keeps track of where I left of reading between the devices (if I have an internet connection) so I'm always current between devices.....very cool.

I'd like to know where the books are stored on my device. I think tukatz would also like to know. I've searched and searched my device storage and can't find them. I ask because I've had some strange files appear on my device and in trying to determine what they are I've looked in pretty much every file folder on my device. No books were found and I'm supposed to have four of them.

OK....so a little info that MAY help. I haven't really "searched" for books on my device(s) but I have searched before for media (music) that I have acquired through Google Play. AND, I have to say, Google's copyright scheme is very confusing.

When Google Play "pins" a file to your device for use without an internet connection, the file name used has no relation to the name of the media. In fact the file name may be what appears to be a random string of numbers and/or letters.

For example, when I downloaded and pinned a free music track I acquired from Google Play (Kansas, Carry On My Wayward Son), the file was in the Play Music application cache with a name like "97H43J...." (this is fictitious). So if your looking for a book title or magazine title in the file name, you probably won't find it.

Not sure this helps, but, I thought I would try. Good Luck.

Yeah, I found the same thing when I DLed a movie to my N7, it was stored with some kind of generated name.
