Right but if I don't understand anything its like reading another language (even though it basically is)

Computer languages are all basically the same, for example basic you have print, C++ printf(), PASCAL writeln(). Most have If then or for next loops and a lot of those basics are someone obvious. You really just need to to a quick lookup on the basic structure such as how to start and end code and if the particular language requires a ; or some end of line delimiter then run through some basic hello world stuff. Then you just keep building upon the basics, learn how to call subroutines or create and use functions, etc. Sometimes there are subtle nuances you'll have to look up like for example = 'null' isn't the same as IS NULL in SQL.

Seems complicated. Just become a coder on a MUD.

Can someone tell me the point of having this sign on the front door of my school? I get the no smoking, but does that say no guns?

Isn't it common sense that tells someone should not bring a gun into the building?

You do live in Chicago.

I was allowed to carry my 1911 in school. I was legal and its allowed.

Funny story, last year there was a physics professor at Boulder that didn't want anyone carrying in his class and someone asked me if physics discussions got that heated.

Licenses to carry laws vary from state to state and in certain states some buildings, such as schools in this case, it is still illegal to carry a weapon into regardless of your permit. I imagine the sign is just a reminder. Especially if the law is written that weapons are not allowed to be carried into designated gun free zones. The sign would signify that the particular site has been thus designated.

Mod note here, let's leave the pros and cons, fors and againsts, and all other angles of this discussion out of this thread.;)

But sometimes your lab partner has to know who is in charge!

Chicago is still "gun free" right?

I believe the Supreme Court overturned that.;) I'll see if I can find a reference.

Illinois in general
Historical state prohibition of concealed carry[edit]
Illinois was the last state to allow the concealed carry of firearms by citizens.[20] On December 11, 2012, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, in the case of Moore v. Madigan, ruled that Illinois' concealed carry ban was unconstitutional, and gave the state 180 days to change its laws.[21] Subsequently the court granted a 30-day extension of the deadline.[22] On July 9, 2013, Illinois enacted the Firearm Concealed Carry Act, which established a system for the issuing of concealed carry permits.[23][24] On September 12, 2013, the Illinois Supreme Court, in the case of People v. Aguilar, also ruled that the state's Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon law, which completely prohibited concealed carry, was unconstitutional.[25] On January 5, 2014, the state police began accepting applications for permits to carry concealed handguns.[26] On February 28, 2014, the state police announced that they had begun issuing concealed carry permits.[27]

Chicago specifically
Chicago has banned the possession of certain semi-automatic firearms that it defines as assault weapons, as well as magazines that can hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition.[34] Chicago residents must "immediately" report a firearm that is stolen or lost, and must report the transfer of a firearm at least 48 hours in advance.[35] In a home where a person younger than 18 is present, all guns must be secured with a trigger lock, or stored in a locked container, or secured to the body of the legal owner.[36] Chicago also prohibits the sale of firearms within city limits.[37] On January 6, 2014, a federal judge ruled that the city's prohibition on the sale of firearms is unconstitutional.[38] The judge granted the city's request for six months to pass new laws regulating gun shops.[39]

There may be a reference or two I missed and timing of stays and extensions may not have passed yet, but you can or soon will be able to legally posess in Chicago.

Chicago is still "gun free" right?

There are a number of federal statutory 'gun free' zones, such as schools, post office, etc that are required to post those signs because the penalty is a federal offense. Most states (though not all so be sure to check) if one of those signs is on a private business the penalty is only a trespassing charge. Most states that require some form of training for concealed carry include parts of the laws in the training and require you to sign that you are aware of the laws. Then there are states that reciprocate with your state (i.e. they accept your states concealed carry license) but may have slightly different laws so you need to be aware of them as well. The NRA sells a booklet thats updated annually highlighting differences between states laws. For example WV honors my OH concealed carry license but PA does not. But PA honors any states concealed carry license if your sitting in your vehicle. So If I stop in PA I have to switch to open carry which doesn't require a license in most states, other than a select few such as used to be IL.
