Amazon has formally announced plans to make Amazon Prime a bit tougher on your wallet, with the company increasing the full cost of a year's membership by $20.
Bah, as a former user I said nope to a renew this year. The so called two day shipping almost never was, and when checking out other vendors pricing against the Prime prices their pricing was almost always lower(and most also had free shipping...). Their video streaming, pushed as a "free" add on, was almost never free as well. Almost all of the movies or tv shows worth watching had to be paid for...a real problem there. And the final straw was not having an android app for streaming on anything but a Fire tablet...bad business move if you ask me. Good riddance to a bad idea for smart consumers.

I will admit that they do have a good selection to choose from in a wide variety of departments... but then so does for instance eBay. And eBay does it for less money. I compared them each and every time I wanted to buy something and Amazon only beat them a few times....but I didn't have to lay out $79.00(now $99.00..)for the "privilege"of buying from eBay. A smart consumer does his/her homework before laying out hard earned cash, do some yourself before blindly choosing Amazon, you will be surprised at how much they are ripping you off, I know I was.
Additionally, I found out that I was also using that Prime membership as a reason to pay more at Amazon, simply because I wanted to get my monies worth out of the plan....a trap many I'm sure have fallen for. After giving up on Prime, I'm finding myself going to other websites, like newegg or ebay or even HSN(!) and finding better prices and deals than Amazon ever offered me. Don't fall for it again, do yourself a favor and comparison shop, it's still the best way to get the best deal
I do comparison shop- back in December, I got a 1.5TB hard drive for $70 on Amazon/Prime vs $90 at Newegg, $110 at Tiger Direct, and n/a at eBay. Nexus 7, except a dang Woot sale, I saved abotu $20 on my brother's birthday present, plus I had time to install OmniROM for him.
It really does depend on the item, though, because I've found much better deal on music over at CMDistro and other "indie" sales sites.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you didn't comparison shop, just that it's the best way to go instead of relying on one place for all of your shopping needs. Amazon does have it's deals, I simply think that you shouldn't have to pay twice for them

With the amount of stuff I order from amazon $99 isn't a big deal for me. I would end up paying much more than that in shipping cost alone. Amazon instant video is also a nice perk to have. Seriously though the cost of prime hasn't gone up in what 8 years? Their expenses had to have gone up substantially. $20 increase after 8 years isn't that big of a deal considering what you save on shipping alone if you order stuff from amazon all the time.
