Shortly after buying this phone I noticed two odd problems:
1) if you've been connected to wi-fi for a while, it loses 4G until you reboot it.
2) wifi automatically turns itself on even after you turn it off.
Those two things are almost unbelievably annoying, especially with QWERTY phones regularly disappearing from the market. After several months of patience I finally got around to rooting it and looking into solving the problem. I would call this solved, except it's only been a day, and I haven't roamed at all (snowstorm) so I can't say 100% for sure.
I long suspected the problem involves "Connections Optimizer" but I found that merely disabling it didn't help-- in fact it didn't seem to make any difference. Also, switching from LTE/CDMA to just CDMA network preference didn't help. Connections Optimizer seems to be a buggy piece of, uh, software written by Sprint and/or Boost that drops 4G in favor of WiFi. Probably so that you don't tie up their data service with, well, the data you're paying them for. Buggy or not, it's worthless.
Here's how I got rid of it, apparently solving the problem:
- root the phone. I have the latest firmware (LS860ZV8). I used motochopper ( hex a mob .com/how-to-root/motochopper-method/ )
- install Titanium Backup Root from the Google Play store.
- remove Connections Optimizer (the version I had was 1.3.639 in case you care).
I also removed some bloatware with no problems:
Boost Zone 4.4.25 -- useless ad delivery garbage bloatware crap I despise. I'm sure Sprint has an equivalent.
Qualcomm Enhanced Location Service -- I don't know what it does and don't care.
Shopper 2.4.2 -- this might be a Google thing...
Sprint Installer 2.2.2 -- I'm not even ON Sprint
I will update this if I discover I wasn't right.
