Help Contact photo in people

So I just upgraded my daughter from a dumb phone to the Moto X. She's having trouble assigning contact photos in people. When she I in the contact, and selects a photo from the gallery, the phone hangs forever and will never set the chosen image.

I've tried it several times and this always happens. Any thoughts? Being a kid, contact photos are more important to her than they are to me, so I'd really like to fix this so I don't have to listen to her complain about it any further.

Are the contacts stored only on the phone, or are they synced with Google or some other online service?

If they are synced with Google, she can assign the contact photos in Google contacts on a computer browser rather than on the phone. The contact photos will sync back down to the phone.

I've never assigned contact photos on the phone myself, but it's possible that the photos she is using are too large. Maybe try reducing the size of the photos to no more than 720 pixels wide and see if assigning photos now works.

If you need help with those steps, let us know.

The photos are only on her phone. She did move a bunch to her PC and set them in Gmail, and that did flow back to the phone. But no matter what, we can't seem to set them in the phone, not even when selecting camera as an option and taking the picture. In fact, when you choose that option, and take the picture, it brings you to the editor where you can crop it be fore applying it, but the photo you just took isn't there, it's whatever the last photo you were trying to set as a contact photo.

Well, for what it's worth, I just created a test contact, hit the photo field, took a picture. It asked me to crop after I confirmed it - I used the "Gallery" app to crop - and then the crop took and the contact was saved.

So, I can't say that I know what's wrong, but all of that works on my phone. My suggestion would be to import all of the contacts into Google contacts, if that's at all possible, but I always suggest that anyway - if the phone is ever lost or has to be reset, the contacts will be repopulated from Google anyway.

All that said - by any chance, does she have these contacts backed up with Verizon Backup Assistant? (I am guessing that you have a Verizon family plan based on your profile, that says Verizon, and that you have a Droid DNA.) If so, I think that these contacts can have photos added on Verizon's web site. You go to verizonwireless.com, log in using her phone number and passphrase, go to "manage contact", and from there contact photos can be added - and those should sync to the phone. It may be a little tedious, though.
