Help 3G not working outside home

Hi my wife has just changed her phone from Sony xperia Z1 compact to the galaxy S3 as she wasnt getting on with the Z1. The 3G on the S3 works fine at home but when she is out of the house it says she is connected but doesnt do anything, ie no connection.

Does anyone know why this could be? The sim card is from her Z1 and is a 4G sim, would this make any difference?

EDIT: UK phone with O2 sim

what are some of things you have tried doing with the phone such as factory reset
have you called your provider and asked them if they have updated your model of phone over their system. have them tell you what phone they have in the system for you.
most likely this had been already done during activation but like you described it appears you have just took the sim out of one phone and placed it in another without having that phone activated with that phone to be recognized on their system..
have you tried a prl update to the phone

Visit a O2 shop and tell them as it could be a sim card problem they should give you another sim,but while you are at home take out the battery and sim for 30minutes and see if that helps.

Im on vodafone but i was getting dropped calls all the time couldnt phone anyone,i pulled the battery and sim out for 30 minutes and it solved it,when i was near my local vodafone i told them what was going on he said he knew what it was straight away the sim, sometimes when you update the phone the sim doesnt properly register with the phone.

I have been testing the phone over the last couple of days. My wife said it didnt work at her work and outside the nursery we drop our kid off at. I got in my car and drove to those places and I got the phone working fine however the next day she said that it worked in the spot i stood but if she moved down the road a bit then it stopped working. This is with full signal and the 3G indicator showing complete with the arrows.

O2 gave me the settings for the internet but these didnt change anything. How do you update the PRL as I have seen this suggested through google searches.

My wife is currently using her Sony again and with no problems at all, 3G is working in all the spots it woudlnt with the Samsung.

We're going on Saturday as the Sony keeps failing to charge with a message about not drawing enough power to chagre. Nothing running in the back ground so it must be a faulty battery.

Whilst we are there I will tell them the problem and see if they can help with the S3.
