At $299, should I grab the Moto X?

I can testify to the "no hassle" part of the 14-day return. That Moto E with the bad screen that I sent back - I had unlocked the bootloader, technically voiding the warranty. But I was still able to return it (the full story is in the Moto E/Root forum). I don't recommend pushing the envelope - I'm not going to root a device right out the box again! But it's nice to know that Moto didn't use rooting as an excuse to deny an actual hardware issue (within the 14 days, at least!).

Bro I just bought my second moto x about two weeks ago of course you didn't make a mistake! The screen on my first moto x was scratched by my keys while in my gym bag so I needed to replace my phone. I went for the moto x once again instead of buying a new phone due to the active display and touch less control features. Plus the 4.7 inch screen is the perfect size for a cell phone.
The only way you made a mistake was that the new Moto X+1 is probably coming out in a couple months. But the moto x is a great phone.
For $80 more I think it was worth it. Did you at least get a cool design with moto maker?!

Thanks for the reply. I am not too concerned about the X+1 as it is likely to be much higher than the 299 price I paid. Also, I did use moto maker to customize my phone.

My biggest concern is battery life. Could you share a bit on how you use the phone and the battery life?

As always, a lot depends on how you use your phone. Mine, with moderate use, will last a full day (16 hours). I used it only lightly over the weekend, went 2 days, 8 hours before charging it, 1 hr. screen on time, and still had 18% charge when I plugged it in. I also have all the Motorola addons active (active display, always listening, assist), as well as location and wifi always on.

As for heavier usage, over 4 hours of screen time seems to be typical on a charge. Reports I've seen are people frequently get well over 8 hours with 4 hours screen on.

I'm also in a situation where I'm trying to determine what my next phone should be.

I'm currently using a Galaxy S4, and have grown tired of TouchWiz & Samsung's operating model w/ Android.

All of the features the Galaxy S phones have are "neat", but after over a year of using it...I've disabled almost all features to save on battery life.

The only thing I think I'd miss would be the IR sensor & TV Guide / Remote capabilities, but would be willing to trade that in for a more pure Android experience w/ voice controls.

I was hoping to make good on my mistake of not waiting for the Moto X last year, and hold out for the X+1, but it seems that the successor will have a much larger screen (making one hand use more difficult)

All that said, my main concern is how well the Moto X will run the new version of Android, given the hardware was even less than par when released last year.

I have no problem with battery life. I have never had it die on me in the middle of the day. By the time I get home from a day at work I have about 18% left. I usually use the phone for texting, calling, Facebook, Twitter, and maybe about 30 min of gaming and YouTube throughout the day. I use it pretty heavily and I never run out of battery life. I estimate 4-6 hours of on screen time.

I think the solution is always the same ... go to where you can handle the phone you are considering and handle it. After you pick it up for the first time you will know within 15 seconds if it is right for you. If you don't ... don't buy it.

What's right for you may not be right for someone else.

... Thom

If I knew the Moto X would be able to handle the next 1-2 versions of Android, it would be a much easier decision for me.

The fact that the Moto X+1 has over a 5" screen is a deal breaker for me. (Interestingly enough, one of the selling points referenced for the Moto X, on the moto maker website, is that it's the perfect size for one handed operation)

Outside of that, I don't see the Moto X+1 offering anything above & beyond what the Moto X can do...other than the obligatory bump in processing / camera specs.

I really don't see the Moto X having any problems handling new versions of Android for the next 2 years. For an example, look at how the Galaxy S3 is still being sold and getting Android updates, despite being over 2 years old now -- and that is even with Touchwiz slowing the phone down. Processors seem to be well beyond what Android currently requires and I believe it will stay that way for a few years.

Blah!

So after days of deciding on a replacement phone for my Boost Galaxy s2 I settled on a unlocked moto x the other night to bring to tmobile. I chose it for specs and price..went to bed woke up and realized it was a sale that ended the other night at midnight..doh!

So I got a moto x in the cart..32gig for 414..debating if I should pull the trigger.

Anyone know if the sale price is supposed to come back..or some kind of useable promo code?

This "sale" for the cheaper 32 gig lasts till the 14th.. I knew the price was to good to last..lol.

The G LTE is starting to look pretty good..lol.

ps... to add insult to injury..the woven back cover is not available now either..lol

Timing is everything as they say. There has been an increase in Motorola online sales, and given the new Moto coming in September, I would expect yet another sale.....but when is the key question....maybe back to school time or near holdiday season.

You should be able to return your Moto X within the first 14 days. Also, very surprised if you could not get the woven back from Motor Maker website. Is this where you are hearing its not available?

So, 5 days in, the phone feels great in hand, but I got my courage up and CyanogenMod'd my old DRM...and guess what, has about all the good MotoX KitKat 4.4.4 features, plus some more powerful ones, even before I start reinstalling apps. I'll play with them both for a few days, probably send back the MotoX, save more $, and wait out the newer models coming up till I either can't keep to DRM going reliably, or a larger screen comes along.
