Root [HOW TO] manually flash roms

Hi Scotty, I followed your instructions on manual flash rom and it doesn't appear any different than the stock rom on my HTC Rezound. Is there a way to verify it was flashed? Here is some info on my current setup
HTC Sense version: 3.6
Sofware # 3.14.605.13.171ORD
Android version: 4.0.3
Linux version 3.0.16-gd0049f1 (htc-kernel@u18000-build-144) (gcc version 4.4.3 (
GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT
I have successfully unlocked the phone, rooted, and flashed the Superuser (all with the help of your posts - Thanks!)...but I'm a noob, so any help you can provide would be appreciated.

your phone will now reboot. assuming you flashed the kernel that came with your rom,it will boot back into the OS. dont panic if it takes a few minutes, the first boot will take what seems like forever. i know mine will have sat there so long,id swear its hung, but then on pop the softkey lights and everything is fine. give the first boot a minimum of 20 minutes.

I must have done something wrong, after flashing Nils' Business ICS 4.0.3 Sense 3.6 it hung for over 90 minutes. I took the battery out and after trying to boot up again same thing happened (hung for 10 minutes). I'm now able to get to the hboot, but wondered if I should try the flash again?

From hboot I get the following (briefly) before it gets to the hboot menu
SD Checking...
Loading PH98DIAG.zip
No Image
Loading PH98DIAG.nbh
No Image or Wrong Image
Loading PH98IMG.zip
No Image
Loading PH98IMG.tar
No Image
Loading PH98IMG.aces
No Image
Loading PH98IMG.enc
No Image

From hboot I have the following options
Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Clear Storage
Simlock
Image CRC

I can't get the PC to recognize the device, so can't work out of cmd nor get to my SD card. In reading other threads I'm guessing I have an incompatible boot img but was hoping you could assist when you have a moment. I don't have an SD card reader, but if I need to buy one to load the img onto the SD card I will go buy one. Thanks Scotty!

I woukd not.bother with PH98IMG files, they are a pita. Use fastboot flash if you want to install the boot image manually.

The easiest thing,is to just fastboot boot amon, and then flash the rom. Check out.the 's on and want to flash roms?" sticky thread, theres more info there.

If you dont have any 'fastboot devices' listed in cmd, unplug then replug. Try different usb ports and cables. don't use usb 3.0.or hubs. Try a reboot of the pc

You won't be able to use and "adb xxx" commands in fsdtboot. This is normal.

At any rate, sounds like your rom isn't booting because you hsvent installed the boot image

(Sorry for the short answers and.typos I'm on my phone  )

i am not sure if this will work with your samsung vitality. this is the rezound forum, and this works with a number of htc phones running either htcdev unlocked bootloaders,or an engineering or patched bootloader.

here are some general tips for troubleshooting adb and fastboot connections. the driver link is for htc devices, however,so it is not likely of any use,but the rest may be:

troubleshooting connectivity issues:
-try a reboot of the PC
-try different usb cables and ports
-dont use a usb hub
-dont use usb 3.0
-make sure nothing capable of comunicating with the phone is enabled and running. htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and even itunes have all been known to cause issues.
-windows 8 has been known to have issues. try a windows 7 or older machine

failing the above,
-i use these drivers for fastboot and adb(donwload and run as admin): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe (mirror)

failing that, try manually updating the drivers in the following manner:
-put the phone in fastboot mode(select fastboot from the hboot menu)
-open device manager on the PC
-plug in phone, watch for it to pop up in device manager.
-update drivers with device manager, pointing the wizard to the extracted
driver download folder from above

note that you can check the connectivity of the phone, and make sure drivers are working by in the following manner:
-open cmd window. change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities

-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter:
adb devices in a cmd window

-fastboot with phone in fastboot,enter:
fastboot devices in cmd window

in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.

OMG!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

My hat is off to you. I had been trying to install EclipticRez ROM with Lunar kernel on my s-on HTC Rezound for a week and these fantastic instructions finally helped me get it done.

I got the phone unlocked and rooted and I could install the ROM itself but it has 4 different kernels to choose from and with s-on I had to actually flash the kernel. That's where I got stuck.

I searched and searched for instructions in English (as opposed to geek speak) and I couldn't find any until I found yours.

Awesome, awesome instructions. Most instructions start out with something like "these are written assuming this and that......" but what if you don't have this or that, then what?

I can't say enough about how well these were written for someone like myself. I started with computers in 1994. I am familiar with DOS and Windows but nowadays we don't have to format a floppy to play games on a PC, so I've gotten away from all that stuff but some of it is still in my head and I am able to fix most problems with computers but cell phones and Android are very new to me and this is the first device I have ever rooted but I have always been interested in doing it.

You wrote these instructions in a way I could understand and I can't thank you enough.

Thankyou

hi AF Addict i tried restoring a nandroid for my htc inspire 4g (unlocked bootloader only) it keeps stuck on the rom's splash screen can you help me please, to sort this out, thanks

You need to manually flash the boot image from that nandroid. Just follow these directions, and restore the nandroid in place of flashing the rom. :)

You have an HTC Inspire 4G and you followed the instructions in THIS thread? You do know that the rooting, custom recovery, ROMs, and flashing directions, although similar across many phones, are very model specific?

What recovery and ROM are you using? If you are using the ones from this thread it will not work properly, you need one specifically for the Inspire 4G. If you are using this one it would explain why nothing will install, the mount points and other internal functions would be wrong.

If you are not using the correct recovery for an Inspire 4G, get the correct one and flash it IMMEDIATELY, doing something incorrectly could cause a brick condition, if you haven't done so already.

If you are using the correct one, when you did step #9, did you wipe everything including /emmc or internal storage, because if you did then you wiped your ROM and backup away.

Note that the HTC Inspire 4G (aka Desire HD) is model code "ace" so TWRP recovery 2.6.3.0 or CWM standard or Touch is available. If it is bootable, you could try Goo Manager (TWRP) or ROM Manager (CWM) from the Play Store to install recovery for you.

If all this fails, I would suggest going to the Inspire 4G or Desire HD forums on XDA, finding the latest RUU executable, and restoring your device to stock. Remember to ask the EXACT instructions for your model to do this, in some cases you must relock before running the RUU procedure.

EDIT: I just noticed you said you are unlocked and "4ext" recovery, does that mean you are still on stock recovery?!?! You cannot do a backup or flash a non-stock ROM with stock recovery, you must have TWRP or CWM to flash a non-stock ROM or it will fail, completely.

Probably too late now, but why didn't you just root with Advanced Ace Hack Kit? It does the root and install recovery (and even S-OFF if I recall correctly) for you all automatically?

ext is a popular recovery for many devices, and i personally recomend it when its available. ive used it on ace, pyramid, and others.

the guide here is fine,as long as an ace recovery was used,as you said. (ive actually got it linked in the DHD forum)

the AAHK is no longer supported, but we do have a guide to manually apply the exploit, wich i would highly recomend. rooting and roming an s on device is at best,a PITA

HI, i successfully unlocked and permanetly rooted mi Inspire 4G following one of your guides, the thing is that i downloaded a rom, did a full wipe on the phone, and when i got to steps 9 and 10, it show an error message, i can
