I have a Question. I just Purchased 2 Verizon S5's for my wife and daughter last Saturday. I check my daughters S5 last night and WiFi and Data was Running at the Same time. Checked my wife's phone this morning and it is doing the same thing. I know when it is in WiFi the 4G is shaded out. But when I look at both phones both Wifi and 4G are running at the same time. Is there a way to fix this problem. Both phones have not had any software added recently...

Thank You for Your Help!!!

I wouldn't really worry about the icon not being grayed out - unless 4G mobile data is actively being used at that time.
When WiFi is available and connected, your device should ignore the mobile data (3G/4G) connection (except for receiving MMS messages I think).
Go to settings/data usage and see if 4G is actually being used.

You can also create a toggle to turn mobile data off - or if you have tasker, you should be able to create a profile that will turn mobile data off when you connect to WiFi.

verizon issued an update today...my wifi and 4g are now on at the same time again...anybody else experience this issue with 4.4.4.

Sort of, my wi-fi is being used, the 3G/4G icons are no longer greyed out, but the "up/down" arrows are not lit up though...I assume that means no data is being used.

Funny thing is, my wife's GS5 has always had the 4G lit up, even with wi-fi being used.

I noticed that the WiFi and Data are on at the same time after the update. I called Verizon Tech Support. They are saying that it is part of the Update. It is part of VOLTE.(Voice over LTE). They said as long as the arrows are not flashing under the 4G and the arrows are flashing under WiFi it is fine. When I had this problem last week before the update Both WiFi and Data was running at the same time. It was the caller ID App. After that was removed the 4G faded out while using WiFi. I will watch my Data just to make sure.

During the last update, something was done that makes both data (4G) and Wi-Fi connections stay on at the same time. Verizon will tell you that if the Wi-Fi is connected, you're not using the data. This is not true!! I was told that having both connected will allow the phone to decide which connection is fastest and use that one. There are also some apps that will only use the data connection and not the Wi-Fi.

As of now, there is no way to automatically turn off the data when your Wi-Fi is connected..........unless you use an app called Automatelt (or something similar). I downloaded it and set up a rule that when the Wi-Fi is connected (trigger) to turn off the data (action). I then set another rule to do the opposite (turn on the data when the Wi-Fi is disconnected). I would suggest not using the toggle feature, as it's easy for the phone to get confused.

I've do this on my wife's and my S5's and it seems to work pretty well, in fact I purchased the Pro version.

Maybe that's true, but it seems to make pretty good decisions. My wife's Note 3 and my S5 are under 180mb of data so far this month, with less than a week to go in our bill cycle. So wifi is picking up the lions share of our data use.

An easy way to be safe is by simply limiting the amount of data you use each day. Take the number of GBs allowed on the phone each month, divide it by 1000, then multiply it by what date is of that month cycle. For example, if you're new cycle begins on the 29th, and today is the 30th, multiply that number by 2. Go into your data usage in settings, and limited to that much data. This way, even if there should be a problem, it won't go over your allowable usage
If it is close to running out, contact your provider. Typically it is cheaper to ask for an extra GB temporarily for that one month, than to be charged for going over.
