Root Phone will not turn on while charging or plugged in

Ever since getting my phone 'S-OFF', I have run into a problem whenever the battery runs totally flat, such as when I forget to plug the phone in before going to bed.

If I plug the phone in when the battery is totally flat, the orange light blinks for a minute, but instead of a screen showing a recharging battery, it brings up the TWRP swipe to unlock screen and freezes there. The keys and screen do not respond and the orange led continues to flash even when I unplug the phone. A long press on the power button (even over 60 seconds) does nothing. I have to take out the battery to switch the phone off.

If I plug the phone in when the battery is fully or partially charged and the phone is still switched off, the orange light comes on and the phone will not switch on. The orange LED stays on even when I unplug it and again remains frozen like this until I take out the battery.

Once I take out the battery and put it back in, I can power up the phone fine, so long as I do not plug it in (USB or power) before turning the phone on.

This issue is most annoying when the battery goes completely flat, as there is no way to turn the phone on before plugging it in. I.e., I need to plug it in (which brings up that frozen slide-to-unlock TWRP screen), wait 5 minutes, unplug it, remove and reload the battery, switch on and then plug it in to continue charging.

My HTC One SV phone has K2_UL (EU LTE model), HBOOT 2.0, Android 4.2.2 and TWRP 2.7.1.0.

I suspect the issue could be whatever the phone boots into to show the battery charging screen has gone corrupt. From what I recall, this screen showed a large green battery with a percentage indicator.

The TWRP version you are currently using is built around 4.1.2 for your device but hack-ishly modified to work with 4.2.2 partially. The off mode charging binary is different with 4.2.2 and the custom recovery has to be rebuilt from source to accommodate the change so that off mode charging will work effectively as it should and not freeze up on you as it is currently doing now. There is one available for you that has been built properly for 4.2.2 with regards to K2_UL however, I unfortunately do not have the link to it. If you head over to XDA and reach out to old.splatterhand over there he should be able to get you the link for the proper TWRP recovery your device needs.

Thanks for the help, I didn't realise TWRP was the culprit.

So what I tried now is flashing Clockworkmod that I had on previously and that seems to have fixed the issue. From a quick test, the phone now powers on fine when plugged into the charger. :)

The only reason I flashed TWRP was due to the countless attempts of trying to get Moonshine and Rumrunner to work (link), so was rerunning those utilities across several versions of TWRP. Now that my phone is finally S-OFF, I'm happy to stick with Clockworkmod.

No problem, and just so you are aware, I'm willing to bet your CWM isn't built for 4.2.2 either lol. Only reason it is working is because your device is running HBoot 2.0, but the files and what not which you may find inside it are not up to par.

You can use it if you like, but you have been warned in case you see some weird stuff over long term usage.

Although I've since replaced this phone with the OnePlus One, I unexpectedly fixed issue when I tried testing something on the HTC One SV. After being unused since last year, it somehow bricked itself and got stuck at the 'HTC One' logo screen during boot. I've no idea why it did this as it worked fine before moving to the OnePlus One. The only issue I recall was where the battery icon would not show as it charged while switched off.

So I tried a factory reset, wiping the cache, dalvik, etc. but got nowhere. Next, I downloaded the stock JB 4.2.2 UL ROM for my phone, formatted the various partitions including system and installed this in CWM. This time the phone booted, but froze at the setup screen for a minute, then rebooted and repeated a few times until it got stuck back at the logo screen.

Finally, after reading that Clockworkmod does not flash the boot.img, I decided to try this. I extracted the boot.img from the stock JB 4.2.2 ROM, flashed it with "fastboot flash boot boot.img" in Fastboot mode and rebooted. This time the phone went through the set up process and appears to be functioning fine.

After thinking back to this issue I had, I turned off the phone and plugged in the power. The animated battery icon now appears. So at least that's fixed and hopefully this tip solves this issue for anyone else with this issue.
