Root Exploit Has Been Found. DO NOT UPDATE FURTHER

Will you hold off on the OTA until we get more info on the possible exploit?

I think that those who updated to the 2.1 v3 leak may be SOL because it is the same as the OTA but what would i know they probably didnt patch it

There is no possible way to know for sure if the 2.1v3 leak is the official update unless you have a copy of it currently to compare to v3. Further, the evidence seems to point to the fact that the v3 leak is still a pre-build. The official update is listed as going to be in the 75mb range, while the leaks have all been in the 100mb range. (It's been speculated that's because Verizon may have extra debugging code or something running or bundled with the leaks that will be stripped out prior to the OTA.)

There are also several features not enabled in v3 that Verizon has recently stated will be on the final version of 2.1 that we all get. (3D gallery and speech-to-text to name two.) Meaning although v3 is great, it's still a test build.

On topic: I'm not going to wait because I'm not all that interested in root at the moment. I'm happy with the features and improvements that 2.1 has offered and will more than likely jump at the official OTA the moment it pops up on my phone. By the time the novelty of the official 2.1 wears off for me I'm sure someone will have figured out a way to either downgrade or root 2.1 somehow.

Further, I haven't seen any concrete information on whether or not you can install an older leak version on top of a newer (or official 2.1) version. It seems like this should work though as the only reason we can't downgrade to 1.5 is that the bootloader is changed in 2.1. As long as the bootloader is the same, it seems to me, it should work. I'm not a coder or tech though, so I could be wrong.

Lastly, I'm not going to pass on the official 2.1 simply because someone thinks that they might have a way to root 2.1v3. The guy who "found" the exploit has a list of 2 or 3 "if" statements that ALL have to be found workable or "true" in order for his hypothesis to work. Even then, he admittedly is lacking some of the coding knowledge and may not be able to write it himself. That's too many variables for me to pass on a sure thing.

I'd like to point out that Verizon tends to confuse the features of their various Android devices. Remember the Eris page that showcased Google Nav in inverted landscape view?

Does the Incredible have the 3D gallery and speech-to-text input?

Yeah, but is the dialer actually vanilla? Like literally, when you're in a phone call, does it still look like the way it always has, or like the Nexus One or Droid does? Like with the gradient green and black screen?

Like this:

Want.

The PDF's on verizon show that the Software and Radio Version are the same

I have no idea what features the Incredible has, and frankly whatever features it does sport hold no bearing on what our phones will be able to do with the new 2.1 update. Different phones will have, or not have different stuff depending on what the hardware can handle. 2.1 gave the N1 live wallpapers and didn't give it to their "lesser" handsets. I'm just saying, there are several things that Verizon has specifically said will come to the Eris that we haven't seen in our leaks yet. So either they scaled back their design goals, or our v3 leak is a test version and the final bits and bytes aren't done yet or available to the public.

That's fine, but the ROM and radio aren't the only parts of the software that is "checked" to determine eligibility for the OTA update. You also have the MD5 checksome, other hash stamps and the actual size of the software itself.

Bottom line: There is more evidence that the v3 update is NOT the final version than for the argument that it is. With each of the leaks there have been people here who have sworn on a stack of Bibles that it was the final code, and each time they were wrong. There are marked differences between the leak we have and the update detailed in that pdf, but the bottom line is there is no way to tell without the final software in our hands and doing a direct comparison.

Stating an argument based on the evidence provided is one thing, wild speculation, opinions and guesswork are something else entirely.

It's actually quite comical. We all feel like we've been waiting for the "official 2.1" since the dawn of time and when word comes that it's finally coming..... WAIT don't upgrade yet. LOL. That's like putting a couple of naked and wanting women in front of Tiger woods and Jesse James and then say to them eh just wait till you get home.

hahahaha you're right man

I honestly do not care if the phone gets rooted or not. Or, better said, I do not care to root my phone. I don't need or want it. If I wanted root, I would just do it now.
im with you man.im running 1.5 and Ilove my phone as is.if I wanted the root or the new 2.1.3, I would have already done it.as long as I can use my internet and play with my apps im perfectly fine . I came from the bb curve and this phone stock makes my old phone look like its from the 80s.

There is no new root exploit. There is a possible vulnerability, but there is no exploit for it yet. It is NOT new, it did NOT come after leak 3.

A wonderful dev came by and dropped it on us, and has been on the irc network working on it on/off for over a month.

I will say, it does look promising but is far beyond me.

Please please please don't confuse possible vulnerability with EXPLOIT.

It justs gets people's hopes up.

Now see the one thing I don't get is why you guys tell us not to upgrade right after the v3 leak came out. Isn't that kinda redundant? I mean, a lot of us like myself are gonna try out the leak and not think a discovery like this will ever happen. If this can root my v3 leak then cool but if not then you just made a lot of people angry.
