Help VPN config and use

i am trying to configure a VPN on my Android (v5.0) phone. i can successfully create the VPN via SETTINGS | MORE NETWORKS | VPN | BASIC VPN, and all works fine. i can connect and disconnect as needed. however, if at some point i disable the screen lock on my phone, the VPN is deleted and in order to use it i have to re-create it from scratch.

this makes no sense to me. why should the use of a VPN be dependent on having screen lock enabled? and more importantly, why is my VPN configuration being deleted when i happen to turn screen lock off?

is there anyway around this? am i doing something wrong????

Hi

You are not doing anything wrong. To have a configured VPN you must have a secure screen lock in place. It is because VPN is often used to access secure servers (such as at work) and it makes no sense to use VPN for this without protecting access to the device. (This of course is not the case if you are using VPN to get around national boundary limitations, but the requirement still applies)

but why delete the config when screen lock is turned off? why not just disable it?????

and is there any way to work around this? any way to say easily recover the deleted config?

I didn't know that it did delete the configuration. If you re-enable the same security/password/pattern is the VPN re-enabled?

no -- all traces of the VPN are gone and you have to re-enter everything from scratch.

Well, I learn every day. It is not a good idea to have a phone with no lock screen security - so I have never had this happen - I do use VPNs.

yeah, i guess i need to learn to live with the lock screen. 90% of the time it's totally unnecessary for me and a PITA, but the other 10% i do want it enabled.
