Apps What would potential employers look for in an app

Hello everyone,

So i'm a beginner at Android Development. I'm currently taking a course on Udemy which i'm really enjoying. At some stage I would like to put a simple app that demonstrates some of what I've learned on Google play. So i was wondering if folks had some suggestions on what a "demo" app should include, i.e fragments, list views, etc? I don't have a concept for the app, I was just thinking an app that has multiple activities that demonstrate a specific skill sets. Is this a good idea? Will potential employers even consider this as valid sample work? Anyways hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well I hope so, that's my plan. Having a published app on Google Play, particularly with good reviews, is a very good thing to have on your CV. It's something tangible you can point out to someone, to demonstrate your skills. And developing an app takes a lot of hard work.

If I was interviewing a candidate for a position, and they could show me a published app, I would be impressed. Particularly if developing that app was not part of their normal day job, as this demonstrates a 'passion' for the work. That's what I really look for in potential employees - not that they're just doing a job, but that they actually love what they do. I know these people exist, because I'm one of them!

In terms of what to put in the app, virtually anything you can think of will have the basic building blocks - activities, fragments, listviews, sidebar navigation, are all the types of thing you should be looking to include. One way of going about developing an app is to think of a problem that *you* have. Is there an app that can help you solve it? Doesn't matter if it already exists - do it better!

I would add the caveat, that not all interviewers would think like I do, so YMMV. By that I mean some people are only interested in skills which fit in with the job spec, and if Android app development wasn't part of it, might say 'meh, so what?'.
But if app development is what you want to specialise in, then developing an app is a vital thing for you to do.

Thank you so much this really does help! I'm a help desk technician so android dev is definitely not part of what i do day to day. Also the idea you pose of thinking of of a problem that i have that an app could solve i believe is the starting point i needed. What an epiphany. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide me with some tips. Really appreciate it!
