Root [AT&T] RUU & OTA Questions

Okay. Good to know. Is that true for all RUUs or just this particular one? Because there's a thread on xda on how to do this for the M7. Is that process no longer valid?

Not sure why I'm having such issues with the decrypted one. I'll try downloading it again, even though the md5 of the one I already have does match. If if comes to it, I'll just run the exe. If that doesn't work, I don't know what the hell to do.

Fortunately, I don't have any issues with the phone as it is. And I can always just flash a custom ROM and a firmware package. At least, I'm assuming I can. Haven't tried yet. Maybe I'll run into issues there too. God, I hope not.

the problem seems to be with the last release of KitKat RUU's ... extracting the rom.zip from the 3.17.502.3 RUU works just fine.

This thread has grown long and I have forgotten what your trying to do other than flash a RUU.
I'm currently using the ViperOne 6.0.1 rom and just love it.

Just trying to update to the official 4.4.2 release. I've only had my M7 for a few weeks. I want to run it stock for a while to get a baseline of performance and features. Then I'll look into custom ROMs. I appreciate your help and for providing the files I'm looking for.

I actually thought of doing that but wasn't sure if I should. I don't know what each line of that text is for so wasn't sure if they could just be swapped out like that, in case there was a particular line that was specific for the RUU package. I'm probably over thinking this though. I tend to do that. This will most likely be the next thing I try. I'll try it using the decrypted RUU w/ the HBOOT & recovery images removed. That's the original goal in all of this.
Once your s off,the android info document is of much less importance. If the phone is not supercid, the cid and mid are really the only things of importance.

Swapping out the document that's giving you a hard time is a perfectly viable solution :)

On the inability to flash rom.zip,it may have something to do system images becoming larger,so they need broken down into smaller sizes. I broke down the European kk ruu,and found it to contain 5 seperate zip files, with 3 different system images

It coukd be for some reason these multiple image ruus need the utility to run them and make sure they're flashed properly.

Thought I'd give it another go at flashing the decrypted RUU to 4.4.2. Unfortunately I keep getting the same error as before and the flash fails. This time I re-downloaded the decrypted RUU & verified the md5. I then made a copy of the zip in another directory. From this copy I deleted the HBOOT & recovery images. Attempted to flash and same error.

Code:
I:\Android\HTC_One\RUU>fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
target reported max download size of 1526722560 bytes
Invalid sparse file format at header magi
sending sparse 'zip' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.156s]
writing 'zip'...
(bootloader) zip header checking...
(bootloader) shift signature_size for header checking...
FAILED (remote: 32 header error)
finished. total time: 0.359s
I then replaced the android-info.txt from the ruu.zip with one from a firmware package that I successfully flashed earlier. Same error. Then I took one last shot using the full unmodified zip. Same error.

Can't figure out why this won't work for me. As clsA stated, the zip works for others. Based on the md5 the download is good. There doesn't seem to be any connection issues between the phone & PC. All fastboot commands execute fine. But when I run fastboot flash zip ruu.zip & hit <enter>, it immediately says "Invalid sparse file format at header magi", then there is a delay for about 20 sec then the rest of the output appears.

I guess my next option is to run the official signed RUU.exe. But I'm going to hold off on that for a bit. Kinda frustrated with it all now. Fortunately the phone still runs fine with JB 4.3. Thanks clsA & Scotty for all your help. Greatly appreciated.

Did you edit any file in the zip if so u need to use notepad if u add any command lines to a script.

No, I didn't edit any files. I removed files from the zip. I also swapped out the android-info.txt file from a different zip into it. But I didn't edit the contents of the file. I use Notepad++ when I edit any text.

Hey SharksFan7 I know it's now two years since you last posted on this thread but I hope you will answer me. I have had my One M7 AT&T variant for just about two years now and don't ask me why but I juuuust decided to update it. This all started with me trying to update it to the official RUU 7.23.502.4 from HTC's website. It kept failing with a 158 error message. It was completely stock 4.1.2 JB locked bootloader, unrooted and S-On. I managed to run the RUU 3.17.502.3 exe successfully, which the phone is still running. Next I tried to run the RUU 4.18.502.7 and got a 155 unknown error. Same error message also when I tried to run the RUU 7.23.502.4 exe. Now I am going through the exact same thing you were going through two years ago as I have been trying to flash the rom.zip files for the KitKat and Lollipop RUUs via fastboot which keep failing with the same "Invalid sparse file format at header magi" error. Can you please tell me if you resolved this issue and if so provide me with some help?
