Mass Effect Andromeda

I didn't play inquisition (I didn't play the previous games and didn't want to start with the last one).

Was it all side quests, no story?

There was a good story to be had in there, and some good sidequests. However, it felt like they got to the last week of development and decided they needed an extra 200 quests, just to fill out the maps a bit.

I think part of the problem was that they started you off in a huge area with lots of those filler quests, with the intention that you would move over to newly unlocked maps ASAP. However, many people (myself included), were playing with the mentality of needing to finish the first area before moving onto the next. So it was easy to accidentally miss the story, as it were. By the time I realised that, I was already fed up with it.

Who'd have thought IGN was a Fake News site? :p

Seriously though, 7.7 is respectable, but if you consider the other games averaged around 9.5....

Other news sites seem to be saying similar things.

TBH, I kinda don't care. I'm excited for it and think it looks amazing so I'll make my own mind up.

Having a pretty understanding wife, who "hasn't seen me this excited about a game in years" means I've managed to get about 10-12 hours in since it was released on Thursday. I've just sorted the vault and added a 2nd outpost on Eos.

Yes, the facial animation is shit, the dialogue is cheesy and the cover system is a little flaky, but it's undeniably Mass Effect and I'm absolutely loving it.

I also don't think I'm a fan of crafting and research, but that could just be because I don't have enough resources for the Valkyrie yet.

It's fricking huge and there are a tonne of side quests, but from what I've read, you can go back and complete them at any time.

If anyone else has picked this up, what are their initial thoughts?

I'm really enjoying it so far!

I could've done without reading any of the previews/reviews, to be honest. Mass Effect is one of my favourite series ever, and having now played it for myself, I am very glad that I didn't let the doom and gloom surrounding the release talk me out of buying it.

RE: the influence of DA:I that I was worried about, you can see its presence here. When you're on a planet surface, there's plenty to do that isn't the main quest. I think that, to some degree, the setting/story of mass effect makes me more tolerant of the busy work (teraforming, in this case), as it feels better justified. But equally, I feel like it's easier here to remain focused on the main story than it was in the beginning of DA:I, dipping into the sidequests as you want to.

I finished this a few weeks ago.

There are some relatively big questions left unanswered, but I expect they'll be answered via sequels or most likely DLC.

I also managed to glitch a couple of the latter cutscenes as I fully romanced Peebee and Cora, which created a half human/asari hybrid during the movie night cutscene and also meant there was no dialogue during one of the scenes before the final mission.

The ending was a bit weak and some of the story was a bit ropey, but on the whole, I really, really enjoyed and look forward to playing through it again.
