Android 6 &Ext SD Card - Understandable Explanation Needed

I got a new phone with Android 6 on it. I installed an external SC card and was asked how I wanted to format it. I tried both options, but, in neither case could is just attach a cable and see it and move files to it as in older versions. I don't remember how I wound up formatting it.

I don't know if I ever really understood how Android treats SC cards, but, I could understand how to locate and access the SD card. After I read the descriptions after the changes with 4 I became hopelessly confused. Even it you haven't installed an external SC card there is a folder (or maybe it is actually a partition as well) called SD card. Then there is another called ext SD card. Just to add to the mix there is emulated storage and other things.

My phone comes with internal storage of 16GB and I can add an SD card and I've added a pretty large one. I don't install a lot of apps and so forth, but, I keep running out of memory. I imagine it is because whan I add music it always winds up in internal memory and not the external SD card.

Can anyone point me to a link that clearly explains what is going on and how to use this?

I've tried a number of file managers, some of them clearly show internal storage and distinguish it from SD card. I see I had music on both so deleleted the music on the internal and saw no increase in available memory, but, I see the files also disappeared from what I thought was my external SD card.
