Since Android is tied to Google, this feels like a ridiculous question but I will ask. I have heard with iPhones you can disable Safari and the app store and replace with an internet app to monitor kid's internet usage. Can you do the same with an android phone?

I am talking about eliminating google chrome app, all unwanted apps, and google play without making the phone inoperable. The price tag for an iPhone is much higher buy might be worth it with the junk out there.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You sound like a total newbie. The process of taking out any app from an Android phone depends on what type it is. If the app is a system then it is irremovable unless you have rooted your phone. System apps are usually first or second party apps. Then there is another  set of apps called user apps which are installed by you or the developers as third party apps for more functionality. If you don't know how to distinguish between them then go-to settings>apps and then select the app and see if there is any uninstall button if not then p probably the app is a system app. So the question are you ready to root your phone.... There are many guides on the net to let you how to root a phone and what are it's pros and cons. If the Google app you want to uninstall is a user app then you can goto settings and uninstall. If you have any more questions let me know.
